I liked the kodak zi8 until i found out it only record mpeg4's and im on a PC so that is of no use to me. The next thing would be the flip which I think has good quality videos but is not feature rich. So at this point I think I would choose the creative Vado.

At this stage, 2.5 years later, do you still prefer the Vado? I'm considering buying it, or spending about 10 sterling more for the 3rd gen. But I'm also of two minds about the Kodak zm1 - IF the sound is as good as the zi6. Yeah, you were right, Vado had smoother quality. On the Kodak, when you waved hands around, they blurred. Much less so on the Vado. However, in the Vado, the light/colour keeps fluctuating through the video. BTW, you didn't look like an "Oompa Loompa" - you looked quite good
I think the Vado HD is a brilliant device at what it's capable of and the fact it has a wide angle lense just adds to its perks and to me it makes up for the bad audio. Besides, if you're using it for a professional blog, then you would record your audio on a seperate audio recording device, as for a pocket camera, the audio is good enough for what it can do, out of the three the vado is definately my choice.

@0wenfox - the one I ordered I "think" is a 1st generation model, still not a bad deal. The vender (Amazon subseller) did not specify if it was 1st or 2nd gen. I think you will like it for general use. Just get a cheap tripod and use for a steady cam set up for smoother pictures as you walk, for trips to the zoo or parks, etc. Search YouTube for "how to make a steady cam - you will find a few that shows how to use a tripod for a steady cam. :-)
are your reviewing the 2nd gen HD Vado? If so, is it compatible with Windows 7, 32 bit operating system? Can I upload videos directly to youtube after using the built in editing software? I plan on buying Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas Platinum 10 sometime. But I only have Windows Movie Maker, so, can I use that to edit video from the 2nd gen Vado HD. Thanks.

Thanks for the review. You've convinced me to get the Vado, especially since it's available for $44.95 NEW with FREE s/h. I especially like the Vado's flexible USB cord and removable battery. I hate the fragile USB arms of the Zi6 and Flip. Too bad the Vado can't use SD cards like the Zi6.
I agree with you completely re: the Vado's annoying touch controls and glossy finish.
My biggest peeve about all these recorders is the inability to pause while recording!

I'm not so convinced by the keyframes in this. The saturation jumps up slightly every time. Not sure if that's the AVI encoding on the camera, or the MP4 coding, or YouTube's coding.
Sony DSC H55 is the same price or cheaper, records in HD(720p,60fps) and its a badass camera(14.1mp). Not to mention 10x optical zoom and still fits in your pocket! ALSO!.... it has a really good mic for guitars, subwoofers, etc. This is all my opinion but I stick by my camera.
Vado seems to have more depth of field and and skin tones are good, focus seems a little fuzzy but OK for youtube. Colour seems nice but again not crisp.
i own a vado hd and its total shit. the uploads are always too dark, as you can see in his vids, the vado footage was the only one that you couldnt make out the crease in the chair
this one is amazingly smooth compared to the other ones (more fps) and i'm not sure on the quality but the sound is terrible!, but overall the Mino wins , it has nice sound quality, better deal for your money and a nicer image in my opinion
Great review. You're just forgetting one very important factor here, which musicians like myself look for all the time: SOUND. And in this case, the ZI6, despite the blurry motion capture, is a definite winner.

If you want to record decent sound on any camcorder... an external source is almost always neccesary. Comparing the results from internal mics is nothing more than comparing different levels of mediocrity.
i noticed that the creative vado's colour changes in this video quite frequently. i noticed chris turning slightly grey, and then pink throughout the video.
I have all three beside each other on my screen running and this one is not as smooth as the creative Vado, Flip is grainy as hell but this one has got the best audio. Think I'll get the Vado though. Great comparison man, it really helped me! Creds!
Bought this cam and i love it but just a heads up if your planning on using this at concerts...don't...i took this to a concert and I guess the mic cant really take it because all my videos are drowned out when the music hits its peaks and I can hear the people around me perfectly. Kodak has some work to do, that's pretty obvious, your hands are blurry when moving.
Flip Mino did a great job for the lens it has.
Creative Vado looks great except for ONE concern - the colors seem to fluctuate in HD - is this your software, the camera auto adjusting, in any event the color fluctuations are obvious and a nuisance - i agree with the wide lens advantage though - really concern about colors fluctuating though ...

Hey, I was just making sure here, the audio your getting in each of these videos are directly from the devices correct? I need a cheap pocket Cam for on the road band recordings and I need a decent video cam with above average audio pick up. Also if you are up to date on the new generations of these models, which would you recomend? audio wise?

Does the Vado take stills? If so, does it do Macro? I want to sell my Digital Camera, since it's only good for stills. But I want something good cheap that does both.
Remember, this vid is old. Vado is at Gen 3 now vs the Gen 1 in this video. The Zi6 has been replaced with the Zi8. I'm sure the UltraHD has been updated as well. Try to find newer vids. That said, I'm not too serious on about the vids I will be taking. The Vado doesnt have as many picture issues as others I've seen. I hate tha the Vado doesn't have removable mem and no macro feature (i think), but at nearly 1/2 price of the most up to date cam of other manufacturers, the Gen 2 Vado wins.
I think the Creative had worst audio, but best video by far. kodak had best audio, but video I thought was no better or worse than the Flip Mino HD. I didn't like the red tent that the Flip HD adds.
The Creative probably would've been the best in video if it didn't look like the white balance was constantly changing throughout the video. The only thing that bothers me about the Flip's video is things look a little to bright or vibrant. The Kodak, just like he mentioned in the video, appears to have a choppy frame rate in this lowlight video test. The Kodak's audio was amazingly better than the Flip or the Creative though.
I agree with Donny Aldridge mostly. The picture is definitely better on the Vado. I just got one for christmas. The Audio in this video doesn't do it justice, i'm guessing because of it's placement - almost sounds like Phase Cancellation.
I recorded the VADO here just a few minutes ago and the audio is much more crisp.
I like the wide screen provided by Vado. However, in the Vado video, the colors esp. on Chris skin seems to fickle from skin color to greyish-beige - Am I the only one seeing this? Watch the video segment between 0:20 to 0:59. Would appreciate if someone can tell me if this color saturation flicker is fixed in the "Vado HD 3rd Generation"?
Are you guys serious? The video quuality of the Vado is poor. Do not let the wideness fool you with clarity. I think the Flip MinoHD takes better video quality, despite it being zoomed-in a little bit than the Vado.
One Question for you... I am editing in Final Cut what's the dif between Vado and Mino and which is easier? Do you have to convert both in order to use with FCE?
Excellent Review! I was trying to decide between the MinoHD and the VadoHD. It looks like the Vado will win out because of the wide angle and better audio quality. I also noticed some hissing in the Kodak audio plus the bulky size loses out, although it has SD/Battery change out, I am more concerned with quality. I had read that the Vado had bad audio quality but it sounds better than the Mino in this demo plus the Vado is cheaper in price. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

Vado wins, I really like the widescreen.. it's not annoyingly zoomed in if you're trying to hold it out in front of you! :)

The Kodak ZI6 shouldn't be classified as an HD camera IMO.
Thank you for the comparison though, helped me to choose the Creative Vado HD.

I think the Creative had worst audio, but best video by far. kodak had best audio, but video I thought was no better or worse than the Flip Mino HD. I didn't like the red tent that the Flip HD adds.

Muffled audio.
The white balance of Chris' face keeps changing every couple seconds.
You could get a wide angle lens adapter for the Zi6 (they make them for the iPhone, but it's compatible with both).

The Creative probably would've been the best in video if it didn't look like the white balance was constantly changing throughout the video. The only thing that bothers me about the Flip's video is things look a little to bright or vibrant. The Kodak, just like he mentioned in the video, appears to have a choppy frame rate in this lowlight video test. The Kodak's audio was amazingly better than the Flip or the Creative though.

Vado HD: Colors look natural, no motion blur and wide angle viewing
Kodak Zi6: More detail but with motion blur
Flip Mino: Colors exaggerated and cuts most of the sides

I agree with Donny Aldridge mostly. The picture is definitely better on the Vado. I just got one for christmas. The Audio in this video doesn't do it justice, i'm guessing because of it's placement - almost sounds like Phase Cancellation.
I recorded the VADO here just a few minutes ago and the audio is much more crisp.

I like the wide screen provided by Vado. However, in the Vado video, the colors esp. on Chris skin seems to fickle from skin color to greyish-beige - Am I the only one seeing this? Watch the video segment between 0:20 to 0:59. Would appreciate if someone can tell me if this color saturation flicker is fixed in the "Vado HD 3rd Generation"?

Are you guys serious? The video quuality of the Vado is poor. Do not let the wideness fool you with clarity. I think the Flip MinoHD takes better video quality, despite it being zoomed-in a little bit than the Vado.

One Question for you... I am editing in Final Cut what's the dif between Vado and Mino and which is easier? Do you have to convert both in order to use with FCE?

Excellent Review! I was trying to decide between the MinoHD and the VadoHD. It looks like the Vado will win out because of the wide angle and better audio quality. I also noticed some hissing in the Kodak audio plus the bulky size loses out, although it has SD/Battery change out, I am more concerned with quality. I had read that the Vado had bad audio quality but it sounds better than the Mino in this demo plus the Vado is cheaper in price. Thanks for taking the time to post this!

The Zi6 lagged in FPS speed and was more grainy, but a little less for the Mino HD. The Vado is the best for FPS speed.
