It's really amazing how all of you still make comments unnecessary, destructive and stupid on anyone who plays the violin. I'm a violinist to thirty years and everything I learned throughout my career, was realizing that you are pitiful.
It's really amazing how all of you still make comments unnecessary, destructive and stupid on anyone who plays the violin. I'm a violinist to thirty years and everything I learned throughout my career, was realizing that you are pitiful. Poor poor who kill themselves in frustration for not reaching the nirvana as a violinist, much more so as a person. All are in their entirety vioilnistas spiteful people, stupid, sad, uninformed and isolated.
The shoulder rest issue depends on the fiddle and the peice. I have an oldish, circa 1845 Mirecourt French fiddle. When I solo, I use a shoulder rest as it provides a greater opening of the resonance and thus more power. When I play chamber music, right on the shoulder for a bit of muffling; gives less power but more warmth. Just a matter of taste, really. Perlman never has used a shoulder rest but it has not detracted one bit.
I really dislike Paganini, but Gatto makes me think my stance on the composer. He really is an artist. Not like the musical "jock" who placed first. Gatto has sensitivity and an innate sense of artistry unlike so many players who enter competitions. It's a shame that Gatto enters competition when he could be doing truly meaningful work.
I do think Chen is a great player. Don't get me wrong. He is a bit heavy on the showman side though, which I believe takes away from the real purpose.
Chen has PERSONAL sound, cuz he`s playing without that stupid shoulder rest. I can`t distinguish sound of 11 others QEC finalists, but Chen is more different and more beautiful. That`s why he got 1st prize and I`m pleased that the jury didn`t give Lorenzo 1st prize, because he is belgian.
@theviolinist12345 quit with the no shoulder rest stuff, that's just not true, many violinist have distinct sounds with or without the shoulder rest on, its up to the ear.
He was simply fantastic! However, I understand why he got second. At, 6:50 in the second part he makes a slight error, and looses his cool just a bit for about ten seconds. Ray Chen played Mend. Violin Concerto perfectly. That is why he got first.
With all the analyzing aside, lol. He is an awesome violinist
@schostaievski a mistake does not cost you an entire competition. everyone made mistakes. ray chen had multiple mistakes in the final round with his concerto yet he won.
Can someone identify the conductor and orchestra please?

I met him in person and he is a great guy. Super friendly and down-to-earth.
And as a fellow violin player I ask the critics here: could you play it? :)
I'l studying the piece now and it's really making my wife mad :)

It's just a shame that he didn't get the first price, Chen is a clown but Lorenzo is authentic.
His music is pouring out from his soul. His emotions are real and he has a real inspiration.
The world is more and more unfair.......

I'd hardly call Chen a clown! But Lorenzo is FABULOUS!

@jasonform
well, if you compare these so-called ''greats'' with the 20. century greats, then you should grow up musically and mentally.

Yes, with this passage played so "tentatively", I would think he's lucky to have placed 2nd....
