Yes you do, becuase this is not an INSTALL, this is an UPGRADE. Install will get rid of all you existing files and make a new mac. But in this case as youyr just upgrading, all your files will remain the same. But i cant stress enough to BACK UP YOU DATA!!!!!! BACK IT UP!!!! especiallly because your doing it this way, and not the legal purchased way...

yes u can do the following:

its quick and easy,
use disk ultility,
click on restore,
point to the snow leopard image,
then in the 2nd box point to which external drive you want to mount onto,
and click erase and restore,
once done shut down your mac,
hold 'ALT'
at the boot option click on snow leopard your external hard drive,
and install..
