By far the best and most informative video I've found on the internet regarding this subject. I have the same problem you show here. I had purchased a second aftermarket seal and it just seemed way too tight to even go on there. Your advice of the actual Ford part and the sealant seems like the way to go. If I try to save money by reusing the "loose" aftermarket seal and simply apply sealant, is it likely to come out again?
Hey please respond to my comment, I have a 1984 lincoln towncar and it has a leaky transmission, would this be the same as a rear main seal? And the same process to replace it basically?
@roadragecustoms Well I was hoping I was right...lol. Does the tranny need to be completely disengaged from the engine? Or just scooted back with the drive-shaft removed? Do you think that could work? Any tips or tricks on replacing one?
you make it look so easy. iv been trying to do the seals on my 89 cavalier for almost a month now. i just cant get them in straight. how would i do it?
Hey Dave, is play in the U_joints are major or minor factor in the seal release? or is it the sole reason why the seal would pop out? Because on my friends '73 Chevy pickup, his seal was still intact, but the u-joints had a lot of excess play in them
@Nightwing690 With sloppy U joints, I'd be more concerned about breakage. If a front joint breaks, the drive shaft can try to become a pole vault when it sticks into the ground. If they don't break, they also can cause vibrations that prematurely wear the seal or the tailshaft bushing.
Excellent audio, and really good lighting. Also, you used a very creative way to show how you slide under the vehicle with the creeper. Keep em coming, thanks.
@kgriggs75 I haven't seen any tailshaft seal fall out like this before this one. I have seen a few Honda balance shaft seals and one Ford front pump seal come out like this.
Do I have to get the 'Ford' seal from the dealer or is there another place that carries these?

@The18Jake The rear main is in the back of the engine. It usually requires transmission removal. That would be an engine oil leak, not ATF.

What if that part which stays in housing (the one on which you put the drive shaft on) is loose. Shoud I change whole tailshaft extension housing?
CharlestonKarolina 1 year ago
@CharlestonKarolina You can, or, on some vehicles, you can remove the housing & replace the bushing.

Oh no not RTV! I think You could have done better by saying "I am going to put a little JB weld on this to make sure it does not come out again."

make sure you mark where the bolts were at 1:32 If you dont you will get vibration because it wont be balanced
ThinkerMister11 1 year ago
@ThinkerMister11 Most vehicles have a driveshaft balanced independently of the vehicle making that step unnecessary.

wow, do all drive shafts come off that easily?
sbab83 1 year ago
@sbab83 Nope. I got lucky. Usually I have to pry the back of the driveshaft a little to get it loose from the diff.
