my father side, summerson's ,earliest and complete record traile, back from penshaw, durham, began workington, cumbria 1700's, this dialect remind me much of durham area, who gave what dialect i wonder?
xxblue. Cumbria was formed when the County of Cumberland was renamed to Cumbria in 1974. It has never been in Lancashire. Millom was the most Southernly town in Cumberland. Barrow in Furness used to be part of Lancashire and was incorporated into the new Cumbria again in 1974. The county of Cumberland goes back to the 12th century.
Surprisingly easy for me to understand, given that my main contact with west Cumbrians are the few who come to Barrow from Millom. Not a million miles away from Barrovian.
Its a dialect/language all of its own that people from the area understand perfectly well and we're all proud of it. If you dont like it your not welcome here in cumbria and you can stop listening to videos about our language its that easy. Dont tell me i dont speak correctly just coz you aint learned our ways. Our language is made up from viking norse/icelandic, celtic irish/scottish etc. If you dont like it, quite simply fuck off.
my granda speaks like this:') i'm from cumbria.

I can hear similar elements to the Newcastle accent, which would make sense looking at a map of England.
