so if i overclock a q6600 to e8400 speeds and run a dual core game they are the exact same but if i overclock both to the same speeds and run a quad core game the q6600 will be better?
Multitasking CPU intensive programs is one use of a quad core, but not everyone does that and it is certainly not what it's all about. In the case of this video, it is showing what quad core can do 'if' utilized in a game.
The problem, as JayMorePro demonstrated below, is the vast majority don't have quad core. So targeting its performance in games as seen in this video is a bad idea, at least until the quad install base significantly increases to justify making it a mandatory requirement.
I use it for video producing I use after effects cs3 and Vegas 8. And let me tell you, the rendering time is insane. In Vegas for instance the rendering, is way faster than the real time playback. My old computer would take forever (p4 2.8ghz) many hours. Now it just takes minutes and I can watch videos on the internet even play HD movies while rendering. For me it is a most.
Utilising quad in games has issues that rendering software doesn't have to consider. If video conversion software designed to utilise quad is run on a dual, then it simply takes longer. If I game 'fully' takes advantage of quad to enhance game play, which cannot be simply scaled without impacting the game play experience, then quad becomes a minimum requirement.
Hence why it is important to reach the required install base before releasing 'native' quad or dual supporting games.
I'm about to buy parts to build a new system in a couple of days, I'm leaning towards getting one of these quad core chips instead of a duo core e6600 because I dont want to get the 6600 and then the devs start pushing out multithreaded stuff.
Impressive, but not £500 impressive. It will be a good few years before retail price and software support reaches a point where 4 cores are needed. The CPU companies know this which is why they are making allot of noise about quad core to try and justify its early adoption.

Really not that impressive compared to some of the things coming out that will work fine on a dual core system.

so true, hardly any games are fully optmized for quad core anyway.
Crysis is not fully Optimized (for those of you out there who like to believe in adverts and stickers and crap).
Supreme Commander is the only one other than this game in the vid that I know which is (fully Quad core optimized).

Well it has been 6 months and you can pick up a quad core for £160 now, too bad there is still nothing that actually needs it.
