It's very hard to receive truth when it's usually hidden from the public. This just destroyed your whole entity. The trick is not to deny and reject it; but to try and discover the truth in every possible way you can.
I found this piece very accurate. I grew up in the 1980's in Newark, NJ. Crack was in its heyday and violence was a part of everyday life. (Even the police were afraid to come where I lived.) While I agree that there are other sides to cover,(Middle Class Blacks, poor whites) Witness has done a good thing by showing that this type of lifestyle is still very real for a lot of people.
I don't understand the responses below. It is important for people to know that DC includes neglected neighborhoods full of people with difficult lives. Of course a poor African-American family in Southeast is not representative of the overall black community, but this report never suggests that. Al Jazeera English, although still very young, has distinguished itself as a network that gives a voice to those who are too seldom listened to. They should be applauded for their efforts.

It is a shame that the "Richest Nation on Earth" have 1% controlling 85% of the wealth, and 80% of the public do not share any benefits of the American Economic Might... and rest are middle class that is shrinking fast as India and China's are rising. Poverty is a cycle. It's systematic and institionalized in America... slowly, over time to benefit few on top.
America is a free country. That means you are free to live as you please, and free to prosper or not. All Americans are born with freedom and opportunity. We are not forced to take advantage of our opportunities in fact it is a struggle that takes years of hard work and sacrifice. For some Americans the road to a middle class existence is more difficult and for some it is easy, but we all have the opportunity to have a middle class existence.
If you really want to be bold and enterprising, how about covering the REAL 'other' Washington: the Washington of black doctors, lawyers, politicians, professors, etc. The black milliionaires. The black middle class. Nah, it's much easier to go find a 'victim' in the ghetto. Thanks for keeping the stereotypes alive, and spreading them to an even broader audience. Thanks for making the rest of the world think that all black Americans are like Kevin.
Shame on you, Witness, for showcasing yet another poor, uneducated, broke, aimless young black man. This piece contains every cliche of African American life. Marion Barry hasn't been mayor of DC for years, but you'd miss the prurient fun of reprising those hazy crack-smoking pictures by interviewing the current mayor. Shame on you, Witness. You can do better.
