I hated this fucking level so damn much. My only consolation was that whenever I actually finished I felt a level of happiness unlike I never felt when I accomplished anything else. I also wondered what was it with the tentacle rape death referrence.

i always used raph and mike on this stage since they were utterly useless on the normal battle levels. didn't really care if one of them came close to death, which was usually the case

The controls arent too open. You have to press stuff with perfect accuracy at times with little to no room for error. If might just be 2 buttons, but the spaces they expect you to cross are damn near impossible with the given controls.

and this is what made TMNT for NES one of the HARDEST games i ever played...this level ALONE...the game had NO CONTINUES...no PASSWORDS...only TWO good people (DON and LEO) because they had LONG attacks...if they were dead then you may as well turn the game off u are NOT beating it......i did all of this just to get ran over by a FREAKING VAN when i got outside!!!!

What I do (used to do when I had this game) in this level is diffuse 7 bombs (as best as I can) with one turtle and get the 8th with a second turtle. I'd intentionly ignore the very first one and try and get the 7 other ones and die before time ran out. Then, with another turtle, I'd come back for the first bomb. But, that's just me. I didn't like actually passing this level because a) I love this music and b) rest of the game was impossible for me! I tried that once.

TMNT was a pile of shit control wise so it was extremely difficult to get better. Contra I can still beat without the konami code (have a vid on my account). Then again, Mega Man and Contra were actually fun, so I played them much more.

Just two days ago I got my friend through the dam area without losing a single Turtle and it was actually pretty easy to control after all this time. Most of this game's hate didn't come until AVGN's satire of it. Yes, there were frustrating parts, but games were hard back then and a lot of them did have truly awful controls. This wasn't one of them.

The rest are hard, jumping can be kind of dodgy, enemies everywhere, but it kind of plays like a slightly looser NES Castlevania with multiple weapons/character options, so there can be fun to it (in the OTHER levels). That said, I've never beaten it, and I don't really have any reason to play this game ever again.
