I really don't get why so many people hate this film here? I saw this movie when I was about seven years old and it is still today the most important movie of my life. It means so much to me and I cannot emagine my childhood without this movie.
guys, star wars episode 1 may not be good as the original trilogy, but it is still good, its highlights are: Darth maul vs Qui Gon and Obi Wan duel of the fates musical score watching Obi Wan excepting Anakin as his apprentice(key momnent) pod race scene Anakin leaving his mother (Very emotional scene that made me cry when i first saw it, and is the only good performance the little boy did ) the hilarious pit droids faults acting unclearly told story jar jar CGI overuse
@LeeMastr apparently, don't you feel all special? just keep telling people, i'm sure it will never get old. "hey, did i ever tell you that i knew episode one was gonna suck, like, when i saw the first trailer? no, really. are you impressed?!? aren't you???" fucko.
lol, yoda was the only recognizable character there. i bet all of them were wondering: what the fuck are those ships? who the fuck are those creature? what the fuck are those creatures? where the fuck is vader(please don't tell me that annoying little kid is him)!? the only recognizable thhings are yoda and r2, what the fuck is going on!?
Uh, no you idiot because every single person with half a brain already KNEW that the new Star Wars movies were going to be PREQUELS, hence many of the characters and ships WEREN'T going to be recognizable. Moron.
I remember when all local and national news programs were making room for this trailer into their broadcast; (Top stories, National stories, Traffic, Weather, Episode I Trailer, Sports)
Back then, either Meet Joe Black made a lot of money for all the wrong reasons, or it was the first time that the #1 movie was a TRAILER.
:Sigh:... I remember the days when it was actually exciting and cool to be a Star Wars fan. These Prequels should have never been made. The damage they caused is downright depressing to think about.
@KillSwitch2 So true, they shouldn't have been made. Someone should have read the script and told Lucas that the only thing it was good for was tiolet paper.
I remember downloading this for 8 hours via dial-up. Those were the days. The cheers got me so excited for what turned out to be an atrocious film unworthy of a cinematic release. If it wasn't called Star Wars, it would have been laughed out of the cinemas. OT forever.
@Deavi783 Oh, the guy doesn't get the review? Right, and RLM gets the movie? And please, use common sense. Lucas apologist? Clearly you haven't read the rebuttal at all.
If you accept fallacious arguments to justify why you dislike a movie, then you have no credibility at all.
The Phantom Menace is a good movie, and well received by critics. I rest my case.
@alexrdias Prequel defenders like you creep me out. There's nothing fallacious about RLM's review. I never liked the film, even as a kid, but could never figure out why (aside from all the boring dialogue and Tatooine scenes) until I saw RLM's review.
Jar Jar Binks... Midichlorians... poop jokes. Lucas is an idiot, and The Phantom Menace is a travesty.
@Deavi783 When there are no arguments, you use insults. Yes, very convincing.
You may not like the movie, but that doesn't make it bad. And yes, RLM's review is fallacious, and everyone knows that. Unless you don't know what a fallacy is.
And prequel defender? What is that? I'm a Star Wars fan. What creeps me out is people like you who use akward videos to back up their dislike for a movie.
I've said it, and I'll say it again: It's a good movie. The critics agree. Deal with it.
@alexrdias You got it wrong. Critics hated The Phantom Menace and everyone knows that RLM's review is great.
Prequel defenders - people who defend the prequels.
Nobody likes The Phantom Menace... except possibly 5 years olds and crazy Star Wars fanboys who are under the belief that just because its Star Wars means it can't be bad.
Accept the fact that RLM's review is not a source for anything. It has no arguments against the movie.
Haters like you are always going to hate, despite being incapable of finding flaws. The movie is good, despite your hate for it. People and critics' opinions are not going to change.
@alexrdias Hahaha you're so wrong. People find massive flaws in the film. And RLM's criticisms are quite valid ("Lightsaber duels have less to do with the fight itself but moreso with the internalization of the characters.")
Like the movie all you want, it's still a shit film.
@alexrdias I am totally on your side Episode I was awesome, the least in me opinion, but in the leagu of the others. I have watched his reviews many timestoo make a list of counterpoint and altough it will take an internity to finish I am working on my own defense/counter reviews. It indeed got mixed to positive reactions from critics with 3/5 liking it, giving it an adequate reception. Could you tell me where the 180 page rebutal is??? Aldso would you like a new sub and friend???
@Deavi783 Personally I think he is right Redletters reviews are weak, they re overspecific and just well to smallminded in they ony apreciate certain kin of films. Also he is right 3/5 of the critics liked Episode I, as indicated by rotten tomatoes, and the internetmovie database, and it`s nomination for awards and empires best movie list. I personally agre Darth Maul, The Midichlorian and some plitholes were weak spots. But overall I think it`s a classic!!!
@reviewreviewer1 Red Letter Media's Star Wars reviews are in fact successful because they acutely reveal the incredibly weak storytelling whilst backing each instance up with a specific example. I had my hopes set so high for these films, but sometimes, you just have to be honest with yourself. These movies were NOT fun like the original trilogy. They were dull, unimaginative and lifeless. I think we all know the reason Luca$ decided to make them...
@alexrdias You are right TPM is a classic. Also it`s true Redlettermedias reviews are not that great, they are overspecific, demanding and judgemental1!!!!
@Deavi783 Well Redlettermedia has some pretty dumb arguments, for example he criticises the Jedi in III for not sending mor perople after grievous, and he basicly suggest they severly weake theuir defenses putting citizens at ris for a possible 1 way ticket to ultimat victory. I think ib war when yo plau with live safepla, and not risking loosing is step 1 and the possibility of wining with 1 battle is step 2.
@alexrdias Yes you couldn`t say it better, many of the arguments were weak and on thought trough and basicky criticising the Jedi for not usin other posuible scenarios, and basicly jus criticising the heroes for taking risk, and not using alternatives whihcg were much more dangerous, and criyicising them fo not being overparanoid, and only acceotiong the rules of the film and the force whic are convinient for him.
@Totaly14 THANK YOU! It's so lonley sometimes defending them against people who act like the original films were utterly perfect and the height of cinematic brilliance.
@Anynom -- No, the originals do have problems......serious problems, in fact. They are called the Special Editions...and they SUCK!!!
Dude, you are either too young to understand what good filmmaking is all about OR you are like me (back in 99) and are in complete and utter denial that the prequels suck.
In fact there are only three good things out of the ENTIRE trilogy........Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan, Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor and Yoda (because yoda is always awesome). And thats it!!
Ah, yes. It was quite a night when this hit the internet, thanks to a guy going by "Scorpio." Took hours to download it in those dial-up days, but oh, my, that night, it looked like everything we'd ever wanted. Seeing it for the first time was a huge thrill. Shame that this trailer turned out to be so much better than the actual movie.
I wasn't too disappointed. I think it's just that the people that grew up with it in the 80's had this perception of what SW HAD to be like, and their nostalgia made them resistant to change. I didn't mind the prequels actually.
I'll never forget how the entire audience literally screamed with excitement when we saw the trailer for "Return of the Jedi" back in 1983, it made the hairs on my arm stand up. I sure wish somebody could have recorded that!
Having experienced the hype and excitement of the build up,I can say that Ep.1 was one of the the biggest letdowns of my life. Terrible movie. Lucas blew it BIG TIME. It's so sad to watch this vid and remember what it was like at the time. Such expectations. I wasn't expecting the movie to change the face of the planet, but I was expecting it to at LEAST be good.
Jeez. I remember this. Was like 13 or so. they'd just released all the "new" cuts of the old movies to the screens again. Gawd we were sucker punched weren't we lol.
Only one I really did enjoy was the third one. When they tore down everything and actually felt like something was happening. Two and One blew big time.
i gotta admit, this made the hairs stand up. i distinctly remember this time in my life. i was almost 16 and a HUGE star wars geek. this trailer made me flip out. when i saw darth maul reveal that double lightsaber i was all like, "holy shit, that's awesome!!!" and also seeing the brief glimpse of the pod race was freekin' sweet.
oh, lo and behold, it was only a matter time before i wanted to lynch jar jar binks and kill anakin...
this was a great movie.its hard to top a whole trilogy of classic movies when youre doing a prequel because not all the favorite characters are in it so its harder to make it interesting.
You know its funny. Theres still brain dead people who didn't get this movie. laugh people, Cause they are so fucking dumb. It was a great movie/experience. too bad braindead people who hate it just keep repeating jar jar binks. Hey Guess what... Starwars wasn't just for adults but also kids too.. maybe you can remember when you saw starwars and went into the imagination..instead of being a virgin trying to seem cool by bashing it. ka-owned
OMG wow I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I SAW THE TRAILER FOR EPISODE 1 AND OMG MAN I SWEAR I WAS FREAKNG JUMPING AND SCREAMING I MEAN IT LOOKED FREAKING AMAZING!!!!! :D
Such an epic time when the prequel was being made!! ^.^
i can remember watching joe black for this trailer, then walking out...man this is gonna be cool....little did i realize jar jar was around the corner....
the problem is, they were kids when they saw the first one. It was made with kids in mind - a good fun romp around the stars, right? So what happens when you repeat the use of that recipe 30 years later? The kids are grown and their childhood memories are so immortalized that obviously they wont feel the same about a new film also made with kids in mind.
In 20 years, the kids who've seen this trilogy are gonna be as hardcore about this one as the others are.
I really don't get why so many people hate this film here? I saw this movie when I was about seven years old and it is still today the most important movie of my life. It means so much to me and I cannot emagine my childhood without this movie.
