Yes, I could have built it much faster but I was working with parts that had cost more than any other system I've built (and my first Intel build since the Pentium 3) so I wanted to be a little more careful than usual. If it was a complete rebuild of a Socket A system, I could probably do it in 5 not-sped-up minutes haha.
All cables are nicely tied up and routed now.
Both songs are from the Machinae Supremacy web release tracks.
Memory controllers supporting dual-channel can logically use the installed memory as if it were installed in two different banks, and thus can theoretically nearly double memory bandwidth. Like parallel processing, but for memory access.
It's been much cleaned up since then, which was necessitated by adding a 4-drive 2TB RAID 5 array... lots of twist-ties now (the black cable wrap would look nicer of course but I don't think it's worth the cost for this system). 7 hard drives now!
I am using in dual channel... guess I forgot to specify that, after not having a dual channel capable board for so long. Though I must say that dual channel doesn't really make a whole world of difference in memory bandwidth, even now.
Oh, I thought dual-channel motherboards have the two different-colored slots to put them in? I didn't know dual channel worked when you put them next to each other.
Not usually, though if you have a heatsink that is tough to remove or attach, or a case that's difficult to work in, it could be helpful. Certainly not necessary for just upgrading the RAM.
Wouldn't you like to consider switching to intel considering their more efficient performance? Nice build btw.You would want to go modular when you'll want to upgrade your power supply.
Yup, I wanted up to upgrade because doing video work on the Sempron was starting to be a bit painful while also trying to multitask. Which happens to be exactly what a Quad core is good for, and the erratic performance of the Phenom made it pretty clear that it would be better to go Intel this time around. Yeah, modular would be nice. Plenty of cable wrangling going on there..
With the proper selection of a case you should be able to tidy up and arrange the cables neatly. Oh and antistatic gloves will provide you with more movability, unobstruction of your work view( like what a wrist strap cable would do,lol),and zero fingerprints on new components.:).
The power unit can be extracted too.

How did you reuse ur video card if it's presumably an AGP on ur new Gigabyte P45-DSR3 Mobo??
Did ur old Socket 754 had already have a PCI-e x16 slot?
And if ur Hard disk is only ATA not a SATA drive, How did u connect it to a Serial Port on that new mobo???

this isn't five minutes, 7 min at least

dude it looks like a nuke of cables went off in your case

u should use a modular power supply... you only connect those cabels u realy use

Cable management will do you alot of good by maximizing air flow and not using the copper wires to resonate the heat give it a try cant do any harm.
pewster31 3 years ago 2
Cable management anyone?
ferret6677 3 years ago
why didn't you install your RAM in dual-channel? :S

I changed it right after that.

one prob to many cables blocking air flow do cable managment

The boring part is the un-screwing...
BergluX 3 years ago
is it generally easy to change everything and connect the wires? like are the manual directions actually clear?
DerekS168 3 years ago
Manual? Ha ha... not exactly. The motherboard manual can help with most of it, but for the rest you just have to use your nouse.

There's no standard for that, so different manufacturers arrange them differently.

where do you plug an antistatic wristband to? can i plug stick it to my case?
lil0egy0kid 3 years ago
Usually to any unpainted, bare metal. There should be some spots on the case that are appropriate.
ibmman85 3 years ago
also when i build do i put my psu in first plugged in to the wall or not plugged in?
lil0egy0kid 3 years ago
definitely don't plug plug the psu into the wall until you're actually ready to to try booting.

oh ok thanks for that
