no wonder she blew Covent Garden apart!! I just listened to this and then followed it by watching the YouTube video of her doing it at the Met in 1982 - nearly a quarter of a century later and the technique is still rock solid. What an artist...
Fantastic recording. She sounds sooooo different here from her 1961 recording, and her diction's so much better too. Does anyone know where I can download this song without having to buy the whole album?
@ChrisStockslager Oh, buy the whole album. Everything on it is this divine. Decca's Sutherland "Grandi voci" CD shouldn't cost more than a couple dollars; it includes the 1959 LP, two Art of the Prima donna excerpts and the 1963 Santo di patria.
by the way... she sounds SO soft on the low notes, i was only sure it was her when she got to the high ones... that surgery really changed her voice...
@gustopheles she had a sinus operation to remove some sort of excess mucus, I believe. After that her voice began to sound darker and darker, which some people link to the procedure, as, I admit, I did.
Magnifiquement chanté, merci pour le post ...

Singing of the most limpid, expansive and spectacular kind. And what a finish - the mother of all high E flats!!!

The whole thing is stunning, but the fluid run up to a dazzling high C ( 2:22 to 2:25 ) is supernatural. Thanks very much for the post.
