  • if i bought bigger rotors then stock, would i have to change anything else?

  • What about servicing the brake caliper bracket ??? You MUST remove all rust from under the fit clips, clean and lube the slide pins with a silicone based lubricant, and use a small amount of anti seize on the ears of the new pads to ensure that the pads move smoothly. Otherwise your pads will hang up in the mount from the rust, and burn out in 6 months.

Lastly and MOST IMPORTANTLY, YOU MUST PUMP THE PEDAL AFTER YOU ARE DONE, OR YOU WILL CRASH YOU CAR THE FIRST TIME YOU TRY TO STOP !!!!!!!

  • are specific pads needed for specific rotors like material wise

  • HERY CHRIS I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR VERY VERY CLEAN & EXPLAINED VIDEO WITH VERY GOOD VOLUME AS IM KIND OF DEAF.. AND HOW PRO YOU ARE THANK YOU AGAIN

  • imin tech school.. UTI now and this video helped better than my instructor

  • @kingDavid276 Thats sad and the main reason I never attended tech school. The only way your gonna know how to work on something is to jump head first into it,tear it apart and put it back together.I have been a mechanic for15years now and dont have one certificate. That alone has cost me a good job or two and a dealership will never hire me because Im not"book smart"Thats the difference between me and the tech grad I talk the talk and walk the walk where as the UTI guy cant do both. no offense

  • Great video, thanks!

    Dave

  • @houser4201 This question has been answered a few times in the comments before you, but to summarize--they were installed in the correct direction and this was confirmed with the manufacturer.

  • It's funny he'd go through the trouble of getting aftermarket rotors and pads but not the caliper? And why get semi-metallic pads if all the brake dust will dirty everything up...

  • @RascalAtaxia The point of the video was to show a simple maintenance job. Replacing calipers is a whole different ballgame that is much more involved. We have other videos in the motorztv channel showing that.

  • @000JERRY0000 Glad we could inspire ya! And thanks for watching Motorz!! Season 5 just started to be sure to catch the new episodes.

  • @000JERRY0000 Glad we could inspire ya! And thanks for watching Motorz!! Season 5 just started to be sure to catch the new episodes.

  • nice tutotial bro, very nice

  • @2009stalker Thank you very much, sir!

  • changing rotors and pads is a pain without electronic tools

  • @Aaendewy8D Sure makes it easier, but it can also be easily done with hand tools.

  • Would this be the same on a 2008 Ford Escape?

  • @New2011Daddy Probably very similar!

  • dude, you are so cool. thanks.

  • @northbeachfilms No, you are for watching Motorz! :)

  • thanks for tips

  • My girlfriend need hers brakes and rotors replaced on her 2006 Ford Escape. I was planning on doing it for her if its possible. Would the process be similar for her car? Ive read that you should bleed out the brake system after installing new brakes. Is this true, and how would I go about doing this if I'm doing it by myself? Ive never changed brake before, so sorry for my ignorance. Great video though! You make it look easy!

  • next time show how to use the brake pad spreader for people like me that are getting started on this mechanical stuff =)

  • @jt18001 Thanks for the feedback. We will!

  • @jt18001 exactly

  • Funny wheres the emergency brakes? They are suppose to be in the rear

  • @md50md the rear caliper has the emergency brakes built right in. Thats why you hav to turn them in, unlike the front where you can just compress them.

  • nice uploading thank you...!

  • I HAVE A QUESTION I INSTALLED CERAMIC BREAK PADS AND NEW ROTORS ON MY MAZDA 3 AN THEN I PUT THE LUBE IN THE PADS AN DID MY BREAK FLUID THING SHOWN ON THE VIDEO BUT THEN EVERYTHING WAS NICE AN TIGHT FOR 5 MINS IT WAS BREAKIN AWESOME BUT THEN AFTER THAT IT MADE A SQUEEZING NOISE LIKE WHEN YU NEED NEW BREAKS HOW DO I GET RID OF THAT?

  • What about a 94 mustang ?

  • looks so easy with right tools, i had to use clamp to move caliper, my hands are numb, anyway great video.

My rusted calipers was such pain, guess is not that easy when car has 300 000 miles LOL

  • 0:03 Easy there guy. Don't hurt yourself now.

  • @donnybgood LOL Thanks we always work out with safety in mind :)

  • So, don't put the clip back on after installing the new rotor???

  • @13MJared Correct. You usually have to destroy them to get them off anyway :)

  • @motorztv do you have to replace them with new clips?

  • @mengthor You do not have to replace them.

  • @motorztv thanks it's because discount tire direct was trying to convince me to replace them for forty bucks and i said no. lol.

  • @mengthor Wow... I've never heard of that.

  • Chris, is there a special need for slotted/drilled? I use the car for carrying sports gear to and from my destination and goes over the hill.

  • PAIN IN THE ASS TO FIND A PLACE WITH THE RIGHT MACHINE TO RESURFACE CROSS DRILLED AND SLOTTED ROTORS...

  • @HOTRODRICO Do you have an O'Reilly's ? I know they will do it.

  • @motorztv no o'reily's in miami that ive ever seen... but ive only seen shops with regular lathes.. which will not cut cross drilled n slotted rotors. <---these rotors (as i assume you know) require a different machine which uses a dual sided sanding method to resurface them... i got a buddy of mine who had to go to a specialty speed shop that had the correct machine to turn CD&S rotors for his srt8 charger.. but its a mother to find a place with that machine...

  • VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD INSTALL. i LOVE MOTORZ! I want to do mine but my driveway is at a bit of an incline. still trying to figure it out.

  • Nice Vid.

Don't track drilled rotors. They cool down too quickly and can crack. Go slotted only or for some cars you can find slotted/dimpled. for street use only, drilled are fine and look good.

  • arn't drilled or slotted rotors directional? if they are yours are on backwards

  • @1999camaro3800 Yes, they are directional and as we've said at our site and in previous comments they are on in the correct direction, confirmed by the manufacturer. Thanks for watching and keeping a look out for us!

  • volkswagen the best

  • i was told by another person that instead of opening the brake fluid lid. block the brakeline with a pair of needle nose visegrips and open the bleeder while resetting the caliper piston.

is this way of resetting the caliper piston a more efficient way of doing things or is it just a waste of time?

  • what is your input on putting cross drilled rotor covers on a vehicle?

  • hey i have a question for you. i recently purchased a 2008 chevy impala. The past few weeks the brakes have been acting up.......everytime i hit the brakes going about 60mph the steering wheel shakes and the car rattles. what do i need to replace?

  • @fdbuff209 Try getting your rotors turned or replaced.

  • @fdbuff209 One of your rims could be bent too.

  • Very informative video! =)

  • What if I want to paint my rotors in red to make it look more agressive? will it affect my braking?

  • @samy916 I hope you mean calipers, not your rotors :) Some high temp engine paint should do the trick.

  • @motorztv Sorry yes the calipers not rotors.

  • @samy916 - if done carefully and properly, then no. If done in a rush and you get pain tall over the rubber seals / piston etc, the paint will wear away the rubber sleeves and get in the way of normal operation.. but will still work.

  • thank you so much for these videos! i dont have to waste another penny going to the stupid auto shops and get bs invoices

  • @interlagos80s Thank you! We have a newer Big Brakes episode you should watch, too. Also be sure to check out motorztv on Facebook and @motorz on Twitter! -Chris

  • Why Do You Nee To Remove The Cap On The Brake Fluid Resivewar Before You Put The New Pads On??

  • @THCxBoricuax \

You need to remove the cap and suck with a syringe or something like that the excess of brake fluid when you push the brake pistons back. It will push some fluid back to the reservoir and it will spill if there is enough .

  • you can also use a c clamp and the back of the brake pad to push the piston back if needed.

  • How do you know if you need new rotors? I have some slight wobble/steering wheel shimmy in my Acura, and suspect possible rotor warping. What could other causes be?

  • what if dnt put the spray on my rotors? i put some on my rx8 but didnt know i had to put the spray on em.

  • is it necessary to use that brake piston tool? i just take an old brake pad, a big C clamp or a ball joint press to push the piston back

  • @21min56secs You know what, my brake piston tool locked up on me recently so I grabbed my 4 (or 5) inch C-clamp and it turned out to be much easier than the brake piston tool. So, I'd say just use what you've got!

  • @motorztv so that means you don' have the screw in type piston right? for this mustang the piston screws in i don't think you can use the c clamp tu push it in otherwise damage will ocurre,if i was you i would replace the caliper

  • @21min56secs ...also make sure you push the pistons back evenly, if possible.

  • It's O.K. to jack-up on the bottom side of the differential???

  • @schicktd It's not recommended to do that, unless you absolutely have to. We usually have jack stands under the axle and might leave the jack under the pumpkin for additional support.

  • would old rotors cause your front breaks to squeal like halfinch nails on a chalk board cause i replaced my calipers and breaks and im still hearing that real loud and bad sounds screech

the truck has 270,000 miles on it and i cant remember the last time the rotors were replaced theyve been resurfaced but thats it

  • That'd be so funny if he swung the rotor back and hit the car.

  • dont you have to bleed the breaks also after replaceing the breaks

  • @motorztv, i hav a 09 silverado. question i have is that the truck has rear drums, anyway i can get discs back there? how much?

  • with the new rotars on do u put the clip back on or no need ?

  • @reecieboii No, you do not put them back on. They're only used at the factory to keep the rotors on while your vehicle is going down the assembly line.

  • @motorztv Cheers thank you for your reply , have a wonderful day

  • @AnythingWeThinkOf It's RaceDeck, but you can also get the same stuff from Gladiator GarageWorks @ Sears

  • Is there an reason wh you gus don't show any 94 mustangs or any later models for any reason?

  • @kiddstarstrucc No reason in particular. It's the same reason we can't show every vehicle out there on the show.

  • @motorztv ok thank you well im glade I came across this show.

  • @kiddstarstrucc Us too! Thanks for watching... I appreciate the feedback, too! -Chris

  • When you put the brake pad on, is it suppose to be a super tight fit? Like I have to hammer really hard to get it in. I am not so sure because I am having some dragging issue when the brake is off. My number one concern is the caliper deformed, causing the super tight fitment for brake pad. So my question is , what should the proper brake pad fitments be like?

  • @david10072 It should be snug, but not so tight that you have to hammer it on. Did you compress the brake caliper? If you did, then this shouldn't be an issue. Maybe you have the wrong brake pads?

  • Damn! Makes it look easy. When I get back from Afghanistan, this might be the first thing I do to my garage queen '09 GT/CS. Thanks Motorztv.

  • @YourMKArcadeSource You're welcome! thanks for watching. We're working on another brake/Mustang episode with Baer Brakes so look for that this season!

  • do you have to put the ring back on.?

  • @freshazimiz4 Please see previous responses... there are a few. Or you can read the additional show notes on the video page at the motorz.tv website

  • @freshazimiz4 no not really, the rotors are being held on by the tire and bolts. The ring was probably there to hold the rotor in place while on the Assembly Line at the Motor company.

  • why dont you use any grease to the brake pads?? I mean for them to slide on.

  • @Roshandk you should try WD-40 on them

  • I'm unfamiliar with what you were referring to on the back calipers where you turned about 1/4 turn clockwise, was that all there is to it? How much do you turn, and why? Can you explain that a little more thoroughly please?

  • Thx for a good vid.

  • Those stock pads and rotors looked like they had enough life left in them. What a waste.

  • @lordbemylight They've been re-purposed, not wasted.

  • @motorztv hey i needed to know about the clip that holds the rotor on do u reinstall the same one or do u get one with the rotor and how do i pop it back i dont want the rotor flying off when iam driving LOL

  • @bettafish110 you don’t need to keep that around or install a new one as it’s just used at the factory on the assembly line.

  • @bettafish110 thankz . would u know if its safe to do it at home beacuse my dad once did it at the mechinc and they didnt pump the pedel and put it into reverse and almost killed one of the guys and stopped by hittin a wall so he wants me to take it to a mechinc. you only need to pump it when you bleed the brake fluid correct me if iam wrong.

    Thankz

  • lol love the intro

  • im about to change the rotors and pads on my gt. is it necessary to bleed all the brakes in the process? as well as my new rotors are slotted so do they go on a certain way? like from the middle of the the slot out facing the back of the car? or cascading toward the front like how this was done? thanks

  • @SeanBallaWaller1 As long as you don't disconnect any of your brake lines, you don't need to bleed your brakes. Just open up your brake fluid reservoir like I did at 3:08. As far as the direction, all brake rotors I've installed have a clear indication as to which side it goes on (R) or (L). These were put on correctly, despite a few comments, so it's best to check with the manufacturer to determine how they were designed to be installed.

  • @motorztv also i have gone to 5 auto shops and no one has the rear piston rotation tool. what do i do? and where can i get it? they sell 5 sided block/cube things at pepboys but none of the sides fit

  • @SeanBallaWaller1 How is that possible? Autozone, Oreilly, Autozone, Napa all have that tool? Sometimes you have to RENT a tool. Pay the full price of the tool & when you return it they return your money. Im not sure if completely but the majority of it or all of it i think.

  • Is painting the rotor a bad idea?

  • @MCBakano Yes, that's a bad idea!

  • HI THERE MY FRIEND, I HAVE A BRIEF QUESTION, MY CAR WAS MAKING A SQUEAK SOUND AND THINKING THAT THEY WERE THE ROTORS, SO I REPLACED THEM AND AFTER FOR MONTHS THE SAME SQUEAKING SOUND, I JUST BOUGHT THE BRAKE PADS, THEY WERE WORN OUT, IS IT TRUE THAT BEFORE REPLACING THE BRAKE PADS YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO THE ROTORS "TORNEAR" I DON'T KNOW HOW TO SAY THAT IN ENGLISH, SINCE THE OLD BRAKE PADS WORN OUT THE ROTOR? I DON'T KNOW IF I WAS TO CLEAR ABOUT IT, BUT DO YOU GET ME SORT OF. THANKS

  • thanks for up loading video...it helped lot...

  • @stanggtv8 Glad it helped... that's why we make Motorz!

  • That white mustang is hard James Dean will love this

  • awesome uploads keep them coming :)

  • @kiedro96 Thanks we will!

  • hola muy interesante los videos son geniales espero pongan uno de como sustituir las bujias de mi ford mustang 2009 edi 45

    gracias.

    sid

  • i got a torque and socket drive. but mine cant losen, only tighten? are there any which can do both?

  • Great video, though I would clean the wheel hubs before putting on the rotors. Wouldn't want to have that chance of off-axis brake rotors.

  • awesome niceo ne on showing us what toosl we need. is it truew you HAVE to replace the guide pin bolt if your car has one on some types of brakes

  • love it

  • the vented / slotted rotors goes in certain directions , would be better if it was mentioned the proper way it goes into the car

  • @gr8Moo We *should* have mentioned that, true. However... one was labeled "L" and the other "R" so we didn't think about it at the time.

  • @motorztv

you guys rocks, still the best DIY shows I have seen

  • @gr8Moo Well thank you! Nice of you to say!!

  • @gr8Moo Yeah... I'm pretty sure he installed the front in the wrong direction. Ah well...

  • @JudadoLV We didn't... but thanks for watching :)

  • @JudadoLV - if the rotors are straight vaned, it actually doesn't matter which way the slotting and cross drill pattern go. However, if the rotors have directional cooling vanes, in that case the direction of the rotor does matter.

  • HOLY SHIT, so IM not the only one with problems with expert village..?

I watched 4 videos all stating to 'how to change rotors' n he inspected the rotor in 1, checked for leaking brake fluid in another, cleaned the rotors n talked shit in the others... WHAT THE F**K..? ??

THANK baby jesus that someone actually knows what there talking about FINALLY..

Keep up the great work guys!!

  • @passwordruffy You just made my week! Thanks!

  • You guys rock

  • grasias amogo buenos videos.

  • forgive the ignorance, but is this the same process for all car models? like nissans?

  • do most cars use the same size socket/bolts on the front brakes?

  • I WENT TO A FEW GARAGES, AND THEY TELL ME THAT IT IS NORMAL TO HAVE NOISE WHILE BRAKING DRILLED SLOTED ROTORS..... I WILL REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE..

    REGARDS

    MATT

  • HELLO CHRIS....MY NAME IS MATT, AND I LIVE IN TENERIFE, SAPIN......VERY GOOD PROGRAM YOU HAVE ..... CONGRTULATIONS...!!!!!!!

JUST WANTED TO ASK YOU FOR SOME ADVICE.... I HAVE RECENTLY INSTALLED IN MY 2000 BMW 328i A SET OF ROTORS SIMILAR TO THOSE YOU USE HERE, BOUGHT THEM ON EBAY FRO "easyautomotive" USER. I KNOW THEY ARE CHIP, COMPARE WITH THE USUAL PRICES, BUT IF YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK, LOADS OF PEOPLE ARE BUYING INSTALLING THEM, AND THEY ARE HAPPY. BUT I HAVE NOISE WHEN I BRAKE HARD. NO SQUILING

  • @matiasjulianarregui Hey, thay will be more noisy, that is just the way they are, I have them to and when I really need to slow down, they will squeek and what not.

Ask more if needed bud :P

  • wait fords use metric

  • Master tech observations; 1) NEVER push old caliper fluid backwards through master cylinder replenishing ports. Chunks & debris end up in M/C and potentially Abs valves. 2) Always lube caliper pins and pad contact areas w/synthetic lube. 3) Wash rotors with soap & water BEFORE installation followed with brake cleaner. Clean again after installation. 3) Suck out old fluid from M/C and flush system after every brake service 4) NEVER over travel M/C with long strokes.

  • @shopken1 Thank you for your observations!

  • Thank God I was so sick of Expert Village videos.....

  • @daxplil LOL Thanks!

  • @motorztv Do you have to Clean the rotors with the Brake Cleaner? or does it really matter?

  • @BoxerMuscleMilk It's recommended, but not absolutely necessary as once your pads hit them they'll clean off anything there :)

  • @motorztv Oh okay, Thank you very much, I upgraded me front brakes to dual psiton calipers and I have bled them about 4 times and air keeps coming out but I drove around the brakes work fine? Got any ideas what could be wrong?

  • @BoxerMuscleMilk You might want to try using a pressure or vacuum bleeder to force all of the air out. You definitely want to get all of that air out because you're bound to have a large reduction in braking or lose braking entirely.

  • @motorztv Thank you so much.

But something very bad happened and tell me what you think happened... I was driving about 40M/ph and somehow my dual piston caliper on the Passenger Front slipped off and the bracket i think it my wheel which cause it to SNAP right off my Spindle! How is that possible? I now need new Spindle, Caliper, Rim, and maybe new rotors. Please tell me what you think happend, please! I can not figure it out :(

  • @BoxerMuscleMilk How long were they installed? My guess is the bolts came loose and the wheel caught the caliper and ripped it off the mount. Very strange... did you ever find out what happened? Be sure to use red Loctite and double check the wheel clearance.

  • @motorztv They were installed for about a month, and for whatever reason it happened, I would like you to see my Latest video so you can see the video I made if it, and I will be posting another one to show what to do but check it uot and let me know what you think how it could have happend.

  • @BoxerMuscleMilk Did you miss the top hole when installing the upper pin/bolt through the caliper and knuckle? That might explain how it rotated up and the wheel caught it. I can't think of anything else, sorry.

  • @motorztv Well, I have just Replaced the Whole Spindle and Rebolted everything correctly and switched the pads. so everything is good on that side.

I also switched the pads on the Driver side because I did not want to have different pads on eash side, So when I was about to change the pads, I noticed that th Top Spindle Bolt that holds the Bracket was half way Loose!!! must be how I tightened them but now i got that "Lock Tight" Stuff on and everything is back to normal :)

    Thank you so much!

  • You should have painted the calipers while you had it all apart! Would have looked much better or some caliper covers!

  • @13612 We thought about it, but we decided we'd do that when we do a big brake kit upgrade!

  • if someone need to wach this to replce brake discs..better don't do it. Better don't do anything with your car :D

  • Thank u for this video!

  • Thank you for posting this video

  • Great video!!! Keeping it simple without all the bs from ExpertVillage. Nice to see the work done on a clean car for a change, as the parts are much more visible. You've just created 38,191 (and counting) more brake work DIYers ;) Thanks!

  • @vrood178243 Wow, thanks for the great feedback on the episode! And thanks for subscribing!

  • why should remove the cover brake fluid reservoir? if not what happens please?

  • you could of actually jsut removed the 15mm bolts. no need to remove the 13mm

  • while u were at it u could have painted LOL

  • Thanx for the video.

So how much performance increase do you get from the cross-drilled and slotted sport rotors and high performance brake pads over the stock ones?

  • Nice video, but this knuckle put on the rotor on the wrong side, the cut line suppose to point backward, otherwise dust will accumulate inside, plus he didn't lubricate the anything.

  • Hi, "knuckle" here. We confirmed with the manufacturer that they were installed properly, per their install specs. Since we worked closely with them, we made sure it was correct before releasing this episode.

  • Also, both rotors are clearly labeled "L" for Left, "R" for Right ;)

  • this s only for diractional type rotors, your plain jane ones doesnt matter which side they go on.

  • OK I guess I am the knuckle head then.

  • did you have to put that ring back on the new rotors

  • Check out the show notes at the Motorz website (link is in the description). But basically no, you do not. The metal retainer clip is just used at the factory on the assembly line. It can be cut off and discarded.

  • you forgot to compress the front pistons?

  • They actually did not need to be compressed for this installation. We should have mentioned it though.

  • ok thnxs i was just wondering never change my brakes and i am looks to see how to do it.

    5*

  • No problem. The front brakes are much easier to deal with than the rear brakes!

  • how bad is it to use grooved rotors?

  • They never explained that brake pad spreader for the front brakes. D:

  • he should have cleaned both sides of the rotor with brakecleaner before installing them on the car. And while you have the parts of the car -> clean them and regrease them

  • paint that caliper. do some lettering too

  • Do different cars have different ways of removing the rotor? The Mustang looked way too simple, I know on an M3 there are two screws to remove. On some other cars you have to go through a lot of shit.

  • Yes different cars(even those from the same manufacturer) will have slight varying techniques on brake rotor, caliper, and pad removal. The easiest way to properly service your vehicle is to buy a factory service manual or a Haynes service manual as both will detail proper procedures and any specialized tools needed to service your vehicle. On 2000-2004 Volkswagen Jetta's the brake pad caliper bolts are "tamper-proof" to resist theft and you need a specialized socket(or wrench) to remove them.

  • yeah difernt cars like my land rover u need to take the hubs of and then the hub assembly then the caliper then the disk so yes every car is deffenrent

  • Thanks for the advice Motorz! Bought the stillen rotors and this helped alot!

  • I noticed you have tiles in your garage what brand are they i have been looking at swisstrax and racedeck

  • They are RaceDeck. Purchased from a local dealer.
