  • I remember watching this live… as a teenager… I think I may also have the first album of Verdi arias in the attic somewhere. The debut at the RHO as Sir Riccardo Forth was wonderful. Although, I must say it struck me then as it does now a strange part for a voice of this type to make its first appearance… this is very good… very good…

  • How can he hold such long and beautiful notes in a single breath? Great lungs. He is great.

  • I was privileged to be in the audience in1989. None of the other competitiors stood a chance. They - and we the audience - recognised immediately that a superstar had descended on us from Outer Siberia. I will never forget the impact he had on all of us. Such a voice....such stage presence.....a huge talent.

  • This man is absolutely a god. <3

  • Young Leonardo DiCaprio.

  • The most beautiful and technically perfect performance of these arias, i've ever heard!

And, btw, it is the peak of Hvorost's voice' physical powerfullness,in my opinion...

  • how come he has been so good for the last 22 years:))? even here, so young. and this is still my most favourite of his renditions of these arias :)

  • Sublime. Da baritono quale sono, mi basterebbe avere metà della sua bravura per essere soddisfatto di me stesso. Amazing!

    P.S.

Quell'ignorante che ha messo "Non mi pace" puoi anche andare buttarsi da un ponte.

  • Here he totally convinces me that he has sacrificed everything, including the supreme sacrifice of his own life, for the one whom he loves as his own son. In other concerts here on You Tube he has become so blaze that it is totally boring and unconvincing and leaves me cold. Amazing what a bit of fame can do to one!

  • the best of all cardiff winners:)))

  • @eurydike I agree. He has the magic. A stunning performance!

  • @CandyHaleLinton and i heard him live :)))))))))))

  • Dmitri definitely did a great job with this aria, but I don't like the way he gasps for air all the time. :-/

  • @HarmonicNature It's not a job, it's a form of artistic expression and he gasps for air because he's dying as been shot.

  • @CandyHaleLinton I didn't mean that it was a "job"; of course it's an art - I sing myself, so I know that for a fact. Thanks for the clarification on why he was "gasping for air"; I don't know the plots of operas. :)

  • @HarmonicNature Clearly..

  • so amazing! gorgeous tone and clarity.... my idol

  • i am glad he won.

  • How good is this... This clinched the victory for him in Cardiff and it must remain one of the all time spectacular competition performances

  • @karlamsterdam i absolutely agree:) and he keeps improving still:)

  • last 678 views are mine :)

  • from what he sang in Cardiff i especially like how he sang there these Posa arias and Ombra mai fu.

  • Me either I had watched 100 times and anytime I had found anything breathtaking, Беликий как у Шаляпина Бог же мои слаба тебе мои Сынь

  • This is incredibly well sung ... I don't understand how anyone could not love his voice. He is the greatest baritone since Bastianini ... what a beautiful delivery of feeling and passion, not to mention his sublime style and voice.

  • Ho visto Dimitri al Met, in questa aria, cosa posso dire.....Divino

  • Now this is a gorgeous baritone'in top of his form, able to sing as dramatic as lyric roles perfectly( see his new records- for example, arias and duets wiht R.Fleming in S.-Petersburg and Pushkin' romances).

  • Now his voice is much fuller, deeper, technically equipped with pinpoint frasing and incomparable breathcontrol. Just compare his old and new recordings(romances, arias(Verdi espessially, but not just ), and it'll be obvious to you that the newer is mush superior.

Take his artistic growth and superb vocal technique. lyrical is not better than Verdian- just a different genre.

  • Pure genius

  • I must have watched this video a hundred times! I never get tired of this. Its just perfection. What a voice

  • @cjr2580 me too:)

  • Comment removed

  • How could anybody does not coment on it???i find it amazing, breathtaking, gorgeous. OMG this man has no rivals, this unique way to sing in just one fiatto the first phrase on "Io morrò" i die of pleasure

  • @Schollistico I like this video the most from all videos I have ever heard him sing Posa. Really beautiful, no wonder he won the competition:-)))
