Recently my 2004 Prius start doing the same noise and the check engine light came on. I connect my Actron code scanner and it read the following errors, P0300 (Engine misfire problem) P0301, P0304 (Engine misfiring on cylinders 1 and 4).
I call a friend that works at a local Toyota dealer and he told me to check for water on the spark plugs. He was right i found water on cylinder #4, i cleaned the cylinder and replaced the four spark plugs and is working fine again.
