Unfortunately I discovered this album during a very painful time in my life, so most of these sounds have awful memories attached for me. I love The Serpent though, it's one of Genesis best.
It is nice that everyone that checks out this channel is so mellow and groovy with no trolls to ruin the mood ...... I love all of you and I mean that sincerely
Snake means nothing more to hiss a spell or curse with the mouth.
The tree is known by its fruit. Who was the bad tree? Which Angel?
Anointed cherub has been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold:, was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
@Jbeliski or did the world have less distractions and more time for one to be clever.imagine a world with no x--box , no tv to speak of,no malls.,hell no cell phones no com puters,
there was one album before "from genesis to revolation" from 1969. it was called "in the beginning". the album of "in the beginning" was the debut album and was made in 1967 and i used to write a crotique on that band in college.
This was the first song ever written by Genesis. Peter and Tony wrote it during their time at Charterhouse when they were only 14 years old. The song was called "She is Beautiful." Then they joined up with Mike Rutherford and Anthony Phillips to form Genesis and this song ended up evolving into "The Serpent." That is pretty cool that a couple 14 year olds could write something like this. They were destined to be who they are.
@TheCorrectAnswer56 it's cool yeah I heard she is beutiful on the 2 disc edition of this rerelease, THE SERPENT is one of the best songs I have ever heard honestly.
Best song from the first LP... Also the best example of Christian reinterpretation which they would do from time to time... I'm lucky: I have an original Decca copy of this LP lying around somewhere... The album is quite a relic, because it sold so few copies that the original pressing quickly went out of print. One reason it never sold is that clerks in record shops filed it in the Religious music section! Find an image of the cover and you'll see why.
So good to hear this old stuff(lol).I have head all the different line ups,and each era brings something new, interesting,or just well written music. You can tell that is not Phil on drums! I can safely say the best music came from Genesis whenever all the members challenged each other in a good way.And this a great start from guys just about college aged. But you can also hear all of their early influences, too.I am thankful to find this, and to all the members of Genesis over the years.
I have that exact similar idea: Genesis, all individuals that were in the band or came or left, became unique great musicians and offer a wonder-full everchanging and still growing heritage of stunning music! They won't survive BACH nor Vivaldi...but a million years from here ,some "strange-ass" will certainly have the privilege to be the first-one on Mars to discover these diamonds. ..made on Earth.
What amazes me about From Genesis to Revelation is the remarkably young age at which Genesis wrote and recorded this album. There were many teenage rock bands in the 60s, but most of them either did cover tunes or had more experienced songwriters provide their material. For a group of kids just barely out of high school to release an album of all-original material was quite a feat back then, or even today.
They original wrote this music for other musicians and bands, hoping they could be behind the scenes writers. But nobody was interested or buying it, so they performed these tracks themselves...AND so it began
Thanks for posting the lyrics. This is a great song. If you ask me this album is one of there best for its unique style. Almost like a beatles meets genesis sound. Its on my top 10 list of the progressive era.
I like it, because it's simple, but it's dark and still has dynamics. Gabriel's voice was probably the smoothest during this time. I tend to put on Genesis to Revelation when I just want to chill out, and just lose myself in the music
I have the tracks from "Genesis to Revelation" in a later incarnation on UK Decca titled "Genesis - Rock Roots" It also includes the first two singles both a and b sides. But "The Serpent" doesn't sound like this version. It;s rather flat or two dimensional sounding where here the vocals have more depth, aven the pace is a bit slower. I prefer the version presented here, does anyone know more about this?
Listen to Cat Stevens' cd of "Mona Bone Jakon". There's a song on it called "I Think I See The Light" that could easily fall on Genesis' first LP. Also, Gabriel plays flute on Cat's aforementioned record.
Don't you think this sounds like The Doors, Jimmy Hendrix, at the time? - listen these instruments and how they are played... But the composition (harmony, medoldy) is really idiosyncratic and the voice ofcourse. This makes it something different from the music of that era. Later on Genesis became more daring in choice of instrumental sounds.
They became more daring, yes... they evolved along with 70's prog music. But FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION is a great startint point... very good for 1969 standards.
I love English psychedelia (specially first albums) which (generally) people say are weak, underdeveloped or rough. Anyway, I love FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION, CHEERFUL INSANITY OF GILES & FRIPP, FOOL'S MATE, THE SYN, YES1st; PIPER AT GATES, ODISSEY & ORACLE, etc...
I have both the 1st Yes CD and Piper. They're excellent! I have the Rhino version of the 1st Yes CD. Their cover of Something's Coming from West Side Story is awesome!
I got a bootleg version of this album when I was 14, the same year that the "Invisible Touch" album came out from the contemporary version of Genesis. This shows what you can do when you aspire to make music, whereas the latter shows what happens when it becomes a career.
Unfortunately I discovered this album during a very painful time in my life, so most of these sounds have awful memories attached for me. I love The Serpent though, it's one of Genesis best.

The intro of the song is just the main riff of Twilight Alehouse, if you listen carefully... :)

I like this album, the stereo seperation is fantastic, typical late 60s, the tracks are very under estimated.

Check out "Carpet Crawlers" when Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins did the original. Lyrics are something..

This is where Genesis started. After they did this album, they changed course and did much better music.
This is still not bad though - just different than typical Genesis.
