i personally had the pleasure and honor to see this kid... yeah i'm much older... play in the same living room, a bunch of friends were there and he grabbed his guitar and started playing... no need to say that it took us a few minutes to grab our jaws from the floor.... WE had NO idea who this guy was before his song, once he was done it was a totally different story. i too bought his CD 4 minutes later...
You obviously aren't familiar with finger style guitar Breckandy - fast picking is pretty much what it's all about and this kid is definitely ace in the field, as good as the best of them!!
i understand where you are coming from with the showing off comment, but you also have to understand when your playing live people want to be entertained. A lot of people like that .
He is an awesome technical player but like Tommy E he goes OTT way too often for my taste, adding in licks and runs that are not appropriate to the tune he is playing but exist only to add flashiness. I prefer the joyful and controlled playing of Doyle Dykes or Masaaki Kishibe. Flash impresses but it does not have enduring appeal. Now I expect to get lots of personal insults for saying this but it is just an opinion - yours is just as valid so I can have mine too.
I suppose it is down to taste. I disagree with you and think that his tendency to go OTT is part of his bubbly personality. Gareth can slow it and strip it down when he wishes. As well as being an awesome player he is a decent, down to earth guy. Although I disagree with you I hope nobody gets personally insulting because you expressed an honest opinion. There is too much of that around. As you say you are entitled to your opinion, even though I think you are wrong :-).
Omg great! Absolutely amazing! What a great guy! Saw him at my school, just wished I had gotten his autograph. :C Hope he comes back to Canada I wanna see him again ;)
Mainy thanks for posting this video, I hope I see him again to get an autograph :P
Good luck Gareth and thanks for coming to Canada, hope you liked it!

Wow, he is a Tommy clone...but he does his own stuff! The Jackson 5 thing is funny! I hope he'll do a tour in Europe soon! :)

I had a brief chat with Tommy on Thursday and he told me Gareth was doing a tour of Canada. He's seriously seriously good! Tommy agreed entirely
