beautiful rendition--she sings beautifully. to bad the film is nowhere as good as the play--through no fault of the actors--poor revisions and poor direction
@delidude1999 I agree there were too many cuts to the score. However, what remained was glorious. The cast was superb as was the choreography and location filming. The film was edited due to the motion picture laws of the 1950's. Darn those censors!
@delidude1999 I agree. I've seen both, and the film was very disappointing. I think that mythical elements in this show play better on stage. It's too hard to mix the real with the imaginary in movies. BTW, this show has been roundly criticized lately by those who believe it glorifies abuse. I never understood that since Billy dies and loses everything in his life. What kind of glory is that?
@79barkingspider i agree completely--it does touch on abuse but why not play it out? Spousal abuse today -- more so than ever before--no it's not right but it's not glorified in Carousel. carousel is a very real play and all characters do have epiphanies from which they learn. Drama does not get any more real than that.
Never fails to make me cry every time I hear it....I have the film on VHS but just can't watch it as I blub all the way through. Then when Billy gets stabbed and You'll Never Walk Alone comes on...Too much for me I'm afraid.
@zolabud69 Another moment for me is when Billy's daughter graduates- and she sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" along with her mother, as Billy returns with the Keeper of The Stars to heaven. By that point I can't see a thing, and I need a beach towel!
@zolabud69 I have exactly the same reaction as you to this gorgeous song. Another gorgeous song sung by Shirley Jones is the duet with Robert Preston in The Music Man, "Till There Was You," which is also posted here on YouTube.
Great voice. I love the collaboration of Shirley Jones & Gordon MacRae on this movie and in Oklahoma. In my opinion, they were the best musical couple of all time. How I wished they were partners in real life. They looked great together.
yes and I was born in 19157 -- and fell in love with Shirley Jones on the Partridge Family -- I love musicals and would have loved to have seen her in this -j- movie stars of yesterday were that movie stars and they could act, sing and dance with style!
THIS is Shirley Jones song. PERIOD. No one; not even Barbara Cook or Barbra Streisand sings this song as beautifully as Shirley Jones. It is the sheer beauty of her voice that shines through.
They would be except the music labels want to make them into hip hop hoes. Take Katherine McPhee for instance. What ashame. But...I will mention Kristin Chenowith. Phenomenal voice and seems very sweet and lady like. She play on Broadway in Wicked. Love her.
I ask myself the same question. Why are these new people in Hollywood trying so hard to destroy beauty & glamour? They make fortunes with no talent, and they are so stupid, and they look stupid with all those tattoos. Terrible.
It's so nice to come on YouTube and see how many people appreciate all this old stuff. This is all the music from my growing up years and they are songs you can love forever.... so much of the music today is filthy and vulgar. I can't imagine people in their 80's singing "I'm bringing Sexy Back" but we can sing these things for all time.
I honestly don't think tattoos ruin anything.... I'm heavily tattooed but I was brought up on stuff like this.. I think its more in the way people carry themselves. I am very much into music theatre (I was even in a production of Carousel).. tattoos have nothing to do with the downfall of society or horrible music. Its just the ignorant people that aren't intelligent enough to understand such thought provoking lyrics like this.
Carousel is one of the great classics and this is just one of the many wonderful songs in the movie. Let's bring back good music and not the #$%# that we hear today! Shirley Jones was amazing in the movie as she also was in Oklahoma. That's another phenomenal movie!
I think that this is one of the truly great musicals of all time and this its best song. As a child I saw this in Washington D.C. in 1958 and I have periodically searched for this song on YouTube unsuccessfully. I gave up for a while there. Thank you so much for this post.
Thanks for your comment , just had a look at your channel you are very talented , and i look forward to seeing a clip from Carousel my favourite musical , drop me a line to let me know when its on if you can remember please .
i don't have any clips of it b/c the show was performed in an Equity house and it's illegal to tape a show in that type of venue. however a pro photographer took pictures and i'll try to send pics to you eventually. actually, if you type in "njyt" (w/out the quotes) you can find a video from when we rehearsed You'll Never Walk Alone (finale). we sound A LOT better now than we did in that rehearsal. thanx for responding.
i love shirley jones & carousel is my all time favorite musical i saw shirley live when she played nettie in waltham like 2yrs ago but she was also perfect as julie
I love this too - Carousel is truly a masterpiece. There's no greater musical.

Gorgeous, just watched the film yesterday on DVD. DVD is great as it allows you to play soundtrack
only. I grew up watching Shirley J. on the Partridge Family...no knowledge of her fabulous
career prior to that show! Btw, saw Shirley J. on Rosie O'Donnell years ago..what a classy and
charming lady.
