oh wen i first watched this movie and heard this song i died laughing XDD "SIT DOWN JOHN!" and then the "incredible" cuz of jefferson with his girl wen he's supposed to be writing the declaration XD
I can't say I knew the Founding Fathers or their personal beliefs, but from every record I have read this movie captures them well: they were patriots who were ready to die for the cause they believed in so dearly-but they were also a bunch of stubborn, arrogant, grouchy, alcoholic, womanizing old men who could barely stand each other. John Adams was both one of the most admired and most detested men in the entire country at that time.
It's been 236 years since the Declaration of Independence and the great Republic...America were born. I wonder how long our Republic will last? What say you?
Progress is good or bad, depending on what it is your are moving towards, moving away from individual freedom and the US Constitution, is progress to tyranny, unlimited control of individual speech, thought and action by a few...and we are nearly there.
I'm SOOOO jealous! This is one role I'd love to have!!! I know all the lines by heart. (literally. every. line. I can actually quote the whole movie.) And I'm a girl :) He's my favorite character.
@celticfarmgirl ha ha Thats soo cool:) i loved it, it was so fun! ha ha i did it a couple years ago and I still remember the entire thing he he. it was great:)
I've long thought this film provides a fairly realistic outlook of the Founding Fathers. They were patriots who were ready to die for the cause of liberty, but they were also a bunch of stubborn, arrogant, alcoholic, womanizing old men who could barely stand each other.
"one useless man is called a disgrace, two become a law firm, and three or more become a congress" sooooooo true. the current congress wouldn't know what hit them if Mr.Adams came back
@dragonwriter62 Yep, thats what they meant by "too many flies". They weren't referring to keeping actual flies out, but to keep onlookers/spies/eavesdroppers (flies on a wall) from listening in on the congress
"I've come to the conclusion, that one useless man is called a disgrace. And that two, become a law firm. And that three or more, become a congress. And my gosh have I had this congress."
My school's touring ensemble included this song in their 50th anniversary review of previous school musicals, even though our school has never performed 1776. Their stated reason? Because it's just that awesome.
@0lotr1freak2 I grew up in Philadelphia and even I never saw this movie until I was almost 26. It changed my entire outlook on America's Founding Fathers.
Apparently the author of this song thinks its 90 degrees in early May in Philly. Back when I still lived in the area, spring was barely getting started in early May. My mother was married in Philly in mid April, and in her wedding pictures, the crocuses and forsythia are just out and we were all wearing winter coats. The flies aren't out yet then either. Other than that poetic license, its a great song.
I do love John's opening comments...."One useless man is a disgrace, two is a law firm and three or more is a Congress!" HOW TRUELY prophetic those words would be now!!!
My school watched this in the summertime and we made this song/movie in to a game. LOL, we did the whole vote thing where Georgia or whatever state it was says they give their vote to whatever other state and then we had to write the declaration of independance and everybody was distracting us singing "Somebody OOOPEN up a window!" and trying to get us to look up from the paper. The bell always rang too early to finish the declaration :'(

In a St. Elsewhere episode, William Daniels sang, "It's hot as Hell in Philadelphia!"
In MAD magazine's satire of St. Elsewhere, the Daniels character is pictured wearing a button that says. " MR OBNOXIOUS AND DISLIKED OF 1776".
Some actor, that Daniels.
