  • Very very nice..been thinking of doin B&W..did you do it in the cam or did use software to confert it?..5*...thanks steve..

  • Thanks Steve, I converted it to black & white when editing with Corel Videostudio, just took the hue and saturation levels right down and tweaked the contrast up a little although I think it could still go up a little more.

  • This video is a marvel.Too bad the microphone has been disconnected because the picture quality is fabulous. A film with a great atmosphere. A real pleasure to watch. Thanks Austin.

    Philippe

  • Merci vraiment Philippe. L'effet est très différent en noir et blanc

  • Fantastic Austin, I believe if Eric Treacy was still with us today, he would praise you fr this clip.

Are you coming up for the Llangollen Autumn Gala in 3 weeks?

    Well done again mate.

    Jeff

  • Thanks Jeff, unfortunately I'm away on holiday for the gala, poor planning on my part as it looks set to be a good 'un

  • It's good fun to experiment and I thought that your bw idea came off really well.

Great shot of the train emerging from all the steam through the arch - possibly one of the advantages UK weather :-) !!!

Rab4472 (aka Mike) did play an important cameo role even though hiding behind his camera!!!

Definite to add to my Steam Smoke Effects playlist!!!

  • Many thanks Hugh, glad you enjoyed the black and white trial. I don't normally enjoy filming steam in summer but this year has been so miserable that some decent smoke effects have been obtained. Don't encourage Mike, he'll probably be after an appearance fee!

  • Very impresive, well done

  • Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it.

  • Austin, this was just excellent. I have sang the praises of b&w countless times. I may be getting old, but I think that there is more detail in b&w images. Steam vids are just instantly given character and a sense of age also. The more the merrier, you have my vote. Liked. ★★★★★ Keith

  • Thanks Keith, I agree with you that a b&w image can offer something different. In the right circumstances I would certainly try it again

  • Thanks Austin for the incredible footage of it leaving the Port of Liverpool. The black and white footage could take us back to when the railways were King. Thanks for sharing Phil

  • Thanks Phil, I might try a few more black & white sequences in future where appropriate.

  • Great clip Austin. I make a very brief appearance at 2.09 (but dont tell anyone)

Hope Ive got some reasonable onboard footage but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

    enjoy your hol

    Mike

  • Thanks Mike, we all seem to be suffering these mic. problems lately don't we. Trust you had a good day after this mornings little hiatus and look forward to seeing your footage

  • Excellent video Austin, I actually liked the colour. Thumbs up

  • Thanks Jon, something a little different

  • Brilliantly done nice to see something different

  • Thanks, yes it seemed appropriate today to try it in black and white

  • Thansk Steve, a right cock up by the sound of things, bit sorry I didn't hang around to see the restart, I only found out about it when I logged on to the Forum after 10. I believe a big 'no right turn' sign is being erected at Edge Hill before tomorrows run!! The signalman will probably be in for a bit of a rollicking

  • A great clip in black and white thank you

  • Thanks, glad you liked it

  • A very nice black and white clip, excellent

  • Thanks very much, seems to work quite well in B & W I think.

  • What a fantastic clip, the black and white makes the end bit a little haunting and more atmospheric. I love the length of it, the build up, it's a wonderful loco as well. Great job, and what a fantastic place to see trains going by.

  • Thanks a lot, B & W can add to the atmosphere, now if only those wires weren't there! Edge Hill is a very atmospheric spot to watch trains, a lot of history there.

  • Like it Austin, you should have stayed for the re-run. Wanted to come down your end and say hello but it was too crowded as usual.

  • Thanks Dave, I only found out a bit later about the re-run. I got there 6.25 and there were three there already so couldn't pan today.

  • The late Great Eric Treacy would have been delighted with that shot Austin, absolutely superb, it's like watching one of his photographs brought back to life...definitely one for us Golden Oldies..ha..ha...Bob

  • Many thanks Bob, I bet old Eric, had he been doing video, would have noticed a bit sooner than me about the sound problems though!

  • @acw71000 It's the condenser microphones, they have this problem under the wires...just been watching your excellent footage on the First Edition of Steam Focus, although I'm in the credits, it's stayed on the cutting room floor this time....Bob

  • No, the mic. problem was due to a fault on the extension lead on this occasion. The buzzing sound is because I turned the sound right up in Videostudio. Is Steam Focus the one from Railway Herald? Where's my cheque!!

  • @acw71000 It is indeed Austin, Richard told me the cheques would be coming soon! I used to have the mic problem with my Sennheiser that's why I mentioned it. Regards...Bob

  • Great video!

  • Cheers, glad you enjoyed it despite the sound problems

  • A neat trick having the film in b/w for a change gives it a good effect, ignoring the overhead wires. The sound of a mighty Duchess pulling away from Edge Hill is undeniably epic.

  • Thanks Ryan, don't know if you are familiar with the work of Eric Treacy but his photos from the '30s in the cuttings are absolutely superb.

  • Its ironic you say that, as I've just found a book in my cupboard that I've had since my childhood years called Portrait of Steam by Eric Treacy. And looking at it now after many years its interesting how Eric photographed and captured steam in many aspects. So I can see where your coming from.

  • Both Portrait of Steam and the earlier book, Lure of Steam have been treasured possessions of mine since I got them as Christmas gifts more years ago than I care to remember. I'm pleased that you enjoy his photographs. The books were hugely expensive when they came out at 3 guineas each. Now I know you won't remember guineas Ryan.....

  • @acw71000 I certainly remember them but we never had a coin or note for the guinea in my time It was simply one pound and one shilling and mainly used at auctions to lure people into paying more than they expected. My 'Portrait of Steam' cost me AU$9.45 and I still have it in excellent condition.
