I just cant do it anymore. Serious its so bad. My technique isnt bad - as I said I was off 4 so used to play well - the only way I get around is to putt from everywhere I can... 30 meters from the green? yep I'll putt it. Embarassing. But I'll persist. I just gotta. For those who can chip - cherish that skill becuase on a bad day you can still score. If my irons are not accurate Im GONE. Thanks for the vid...
I get this a lot; don't worry about it; also see "golf pro lesson how to feel the short swing"; once you feel the momentum in the chip, then it is like tossing horse shoes or a soft ball;
my chipping yips are so depressing. I used to play off 4 now Im off 11. Its so sick. Its all in my head, as soon as it matters (on the course as opposed to the practice area) I just hit it fat or skull it. (cont)
@vinesboyseventysix I do sometimes get some extreme cases where the pattern from the brain is so ingrained it does not matter what you do and a very potent remedy that has helped 9 out of 10 is to chip cross handed; think about it! Many great putters on tour that putt cross handed and some chip this way as well; I have not only tried it but I also approve the technique BECAUSE IT IS ANATOMICALLY SOUND. Use exactly the technique you see here except put the left hand under the right hand...
Most of the time it is because you are starting the chip with the hands and pulling the club too much to the inside on the backswing; see "Golf pro lesson how to feel the short swing";
great video, as always. are you breaking your wrists at all on this type of chip shot (shorter distances). either the right or left wrist. it doesnt appear so. thanks
No wrist break and no fold in the right arm at all! The only way to accomplish this is to allow the body to turn out of the way in both directions; to go farther, see my "golf pro lesson how to feel the short swing" video; Shawn
The Box is home made; take a 4X4 sheet of plywood and make one side 4 to 6 inches higher using a 2X4 on one side and a 2X8 on the other; then get a 4X4 mat to put on top! Shawn
I'm having problems getting up and down. Every time I use my 56 I hit it short and it checks up way short. If I use my 52 it flies too far and checks up way after the hole (obviously.) I can't get my distance control down whatsoever.
My guess is that your left wrist is breaking down due to the fact you are trying to hit the ball. I used to have a huge gap between my 52 and 58 degrees as well.
Lastly, hitting an 8 iron like a putter is always a fail safe chip shot. I do every thing right handed except putt and chip. I have a lh 8 iron. For me the 8 iron is the same swing speed as a putter. Hell even if you blade it will only go a few feet further. You can even bump and run and 8 iron from 10 yards off the green.
Shawn, great lesson as always.. push with left shoulder, let everything fall.... it's so simple, yet so effective.
One thing I noticed during the practice today, is that when there is doubt on how much to push back, it's better to err on pushing back more, instead of risking pushing back too little.... if I push back a bit more than needed, I can have a little bit of 'controlled fall', the central nervous system takes over, and 'free fall' takes place the rest of the way.
this is the best thing i have ever heard in all my years playing golf !!! i used to tin it hit it fat , the ball would even stick to the club head and end up behind me i never had the yips with my putter only the wedge it i missed the green by a few yards that was me out so im playing tomorrow to try it out thank you !!!thank you thank you
when you were talking with the magnetic stick, u said if too upright it goes left, too flat goes right. i think this is a mistake, as gathered from comment on other video lol am i right, or is there something i've missed?
Shawn excellent lesson. I have a tendency to yip my chips and you are right I do manipulate the club with a push and then a pull. I suspect this could also be used for putting?
ive been hitting chips fat for six months. used to be great chipper. going to try your tip. very well demonstrated, thanks!

Shawn, this game is so easy (but only when I watch you demonstrate it). Excellent instruction! Thank you.

This is amazing! I have never seen a chipping video as good as this. Where in the world did you get that Hill golf mat.

Salut Shawn,

If the sole of the club comes in too much toe up, for a right handed player, you will tend to the left...this is what I meant...Shawn
