The death of Prime was the death of the Transformers cartoon. Hot Rod was no Optimus, the whole serious after the 1986 movie sucked, thats why they tried to bring Prime back, but it was to late. The writers of the 1986 movie really fouled up when they killed of Prime. I remember the only reason I would tune in to watch the Transformers was because of Prime. Truely a sad day when Prime fell.

Unfortunately prime apparently died regardless in the comic hot rod blames himself for not getting there in time, prime talks down megatron, megatron still somehow gets the gun and guns down prime, that would've been a more fitting scene in the film instead of the animators making hotrod universally hated because the animators wanted to change the scene.
