there is no question that Ponselles " virgine " is beautiful. and probably in the theatre would have rivalled Tebaldi for sheer beauty of sound.but with Renata there is another dimension.somehow the expression of a prayer (listen to any of her recordings of such) ,leads us Aithiests and sinners, through God (and Verdi) to contemplate the infinite. that she sings for us all that her prayer is for all mankind. this is what i feel when I hear the shimmering melting tones of her pianissimi singing

Actually there is - to quote from Geraldine Farrar "There are three singers one must put aside - Enrico Caruso & Rosa Ponselle & Tita Ruffo - and then you can begin to discuss all the rest". Those three, even according to Tebaldi herself, were near (if not totally) perfect voices and each of them could express such emotion and depth of feeling and the amazing fact was that their voice techinques, unlike most singers of today, were natural and healthy.

That's absolutely true. I haven't seen that quote for a long time. I have a personal and emotional attachment to Tebaldi's voice--it's not unusual to "fall in love" with singer, and lose sight of some objectivity. Having said that, to me Tebaldi's rendition of this aria will always reign supreme to me. Ponselle's voice was a miracle of nature.

Andante - the same goes for me. I would never underestimate the interpretations of other singers, but I too have a personal and emotional attachment to Tebaldi. Her Ave Maria from Otello planted the first seed for my conversion to Catholicism (I realize after many years), this rendition of Vergine degli Angeli got me through 40 horrible hours during the birth of my daughter ... Tebaldi's emotional impact because of the humanity reflected in that wonderful voice must be taken into account.

A message to both Emily and Andante. As you can see from my "nick" I am a great admirer of Tebaldi but also of Ponselle. The latter is just amazing !! and if we had more of her recordings she would be more accessible to younger generations. Since both of you obviously understand principles and ideals of musical performance, please don't waste time arguing about this. I have some recordings but have been picking up more of Ponselle on youtube and I can only say "overawed".

I would have to add Marian Anderson to the list of three - I think because of her color and the fact that she sang contralto causes one to forget her but her voice was as nearly perfect as Ponselle's

Again, that is your opinion. To you she is superior, but I challenge you again to hear Ponselle's "La Vergine degli angeli" or her "Casta Diva" or "Vissi d'arte" - it takes careful listening to realize the true brilliance of her voice.

I agree.. for me more to say: Every soprano who will get money with singing (today 80 %) have to work more on volume with/and legato and more with the idea of "THE SECRET TO BE BETTER OR GOOD AS TEBALDI HAS DONE HER JOB" All this oldstyle singers have been unique in their repertoire and serios singers SOLOISTS. Not like all this today who just love to say "Oh I love to sing this or that..." Many of todays singers would be serios NOT TO SING THIS AND MANY OTHER PIECES...

Yes especially considering the year and all analogical and "historical" materials (including microphones).

All opera was filmed in a b&w 16mm (overexposed in processing time, cause lights was insufficient for filming it normally) and audio registered (not synced) on Nagra. Hardy Video (the one of this video) was recreated using original RAI materials (film and nagra tape), resynced audio & video and telecined.
