For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
Matt. 9:8 - this verse shows that God has given the authority to forgive sins to "men." Hence, those Protestants who acknowledge that the apostles had the authority to forgive sins (which this verse demonstrates) must prove that this gift ended with the apostles. Otherwise, the apostles' successors still possess this gift. Where in Scripture is the gift of authority to forgive sins taken away from the apostles or their successors?
Acts 19:18 - many came to orally confess sins and divulge their sinful practices. Oral confession was the practice of the early Church just as it is today.
James 5:16 - James clearly teaches us that we must confess our sins to one another, not just privately to God. James 5:16 must be read in the context of James 5:14-15, which is referring to the healing power (both physical and spiritual) of the priests of the Church. Hence, when James says therefore in verse 16, he must be referring to the men he was writing about in verses 14 and 15 these men are the ordained priests of the Church, to whom we must confess our sins.
John 20:23 - Jesus says, "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained." In order for the apostles to exercise this gift of forgiving sins, the penitents must orally confess their sins to them because the apostles are not mind readers. The text makes this very clear.
John 20:22 - the Lord "breathes" on the apostles, and then gives them the power to forgive and retain sins. The only other moment in Scripture where God breathes on man is in Gen. 2:7, when the Lord "breathes" divine life into man. When this happens, a significant transformation takes place.
John 20:21 - before He grants them the authority to forgive sins, Jesus says to the apostles, "as the Father sent me, so I send you." As Christ was sent by the Father to forgive sins, so Christ sends the apostles and their successors forgive sins.
Good job church, but you can have redemption delivered to your doorstep for free! Get on your knees and pray to Jesus for forgiveness and he will forgive you, Right now! Then - plug-in to a good church - you need brothers and sisters to walk thru this life with. Our God is awesome!
I don't kiss ass when it comes to evaluating performances, but I gotta say that was REALLY well done. The voice was pitch perfect and everything else just worked right off the bat.
Actually, since Jesus used the media of his day, I'm thinking he'd be involved in all popular culture.. facebook, twitter.. all channels to the people..
the "media" of his day was standing on a hill and talking to people...(though he never wrote down a word of his teachings, which plenty of people did back then...so no, I don't think he really did use "the media of his day"), he also overturned the tables of the money changers and the people selling useless trinkets. I don't think he'd be all that big on advertising schemes like television and social network sites. course I never met the guy, so I could be wrong...
He flipped the moneychangers' & merchants' tables because they were cheating their customers, not just because they were conducting business or advertising their services. This commercial is totally on the level; Jesus would be fine with it.
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
It's great to see the revival going on in confession. Last night there were hundreds keeping the 8 preists at our parish busy for about 2 hrs or so. Last year they maybe had 20-30 people for the service.
THIS IS GREAT! From what I hear from my NYC friends, it's also WORKING! Is this guy a real priest? or does he have the blessing of his parish (hopefully) if he's not a priest???
Either way, a good play done respectfully that gets to the HEART of the matter! BRAVO!!! ;)
It might be a little goofy, but, you know what, I'm sure there are people who will respond better to this message than some threatening fire and brimstone rant (although those have their place too, I imagine). It's good to see priests using every licit means of persuasion at their disposal to invite every possible audience out there.
wow! never thought i would say this but i really liked this .. i was entertained throught out the whole thing and it didnt bore me.. haha which is good cause i love watching videos i can enjoy right away.
This is a great ad and I bet it got people to go. Even if 1% of the 9,000 + people who viewed this went to Confession, that would still be 90 people who allowed God to heal them of Sin. Anyone who thinks that "modern evangelism" is stupid is ignorant. To think that just preaching from the pulpit will get people who aren't in the Church in the first place to come to Confession is rather silly. We have to reach them where they are at... THE INTERNET is key! Great job to whoever did this!
This was a great idea and I bet it did work. Anyone who thinks that just preaching confession from the pulpit will get everyone there is ignorant of our current culture. Yes it will get people that are at Church to confession, but what about those that aren't at Church and don't get that reminder or that gentle nudge. They're online. If even 1% of the 9,000 people who viewed this went that is still 90 more people at confession! PRAISE GOD!
Stupid! Modern thinking! If the priests were in the confessions throughout the year as they should be and discussing the importance of this Sacrament throughout the year also, there would be no need for silly stuff as the above. People would automatically know about it from others. Speak about it from the pulpits like they should be doing, and they wouldn't need this stupid advertising, of course if it gets more people in for more contributions, then I guess its worth it to them.
Still a brilliant parody: please do another one! This got to me Confession when it first aired: am planning on going this Monday too :)
