@Emilybudgie Kind of yes and no. It has some different jungle fowl species in the background than typical chickens and requires special care and diet. Please see my video titled 'Hakuro, a long-tailed fowl rooster: 9' 7" tail'.
I bought a pair at a fair, my question how do I know if mine is Onagadori or white phoenix breed? mines tail is not as long as yours. and the tail feathers look a little different. plz help
@dudu16othon Yes, "poor rooster", he happens to be wearing a safety leash..... that I never let get tight on him by the way. FYI, it's keeping him from flying to the road only 25 Ft away and getting killed by a car.
@raregallus sorry, I didn't know this detail, I my country (Brazil) we used to keep them free in the yard. But if this is for a good reason I totally agree
@CoolZafara96 I don't remember how long this one's tail was here. Been too long ago. LOL His brother is at 8' 2" and still growing now though. You may see a photo of him on my website's photos page. See link in description.

@civilwildman There is blood in the quills 2" - 3" out from the body. If many are accidentally pulled at once, the bird can bleed to death. You can see a close up of the blood feathers in my other video titled 'Longtailed fowl'.
Just curious--but what is the record for feather length on these birds? Is it just the tail, or have you noticed extra long feathers on other parts of the birds?
I remember an article in National Geographic--decades ago--about the enthusiasm in Japanese culture for various types of exaggerated critters. Goldfish, Koi and these birds were what I remember best.
I remember that my first reaction to the pictures was "You've GOT to be kidding!" and then "WOW! Cool!"
@DamiettadCarnivalle The Dec. 1970 issue of the National Geographic magazine featured Onagadori. Mine aren't pure. As no pures are known in the US. Most of mine are 62.5% Onagadori. My longest one now is right at 7 Ft and growing. The longest feathers officially recorded on a pure Onagadori were around I think 36 Ft. The longest know though were 44 Ft. The late Mr. Kubota had one to grow to 44 Ft in 1977 after the other was officially recorded and he didn't want to bother with the process again.
@sabrinastar2005 This kind of fowl is originally from tropical and subtropical climates. They do have to be kept somewhat warm during the winter; about 53ºF. I keep them between 50ºF and 55ºF in a heated facility.
@sabrinastar2005 His tail feathers grew to 6' 9" before I cut them off for breeding. His brother is currently around 6' 5" and still growing. I have a video of him here. You can see it on my channel page.
@occultogg My breeding project is anything but fake, you ignorant jerk. This bird's longest feathers grew to 6' 9". His brother's tail is currently at 6' 5" and still growing.

@elmimi274 No apology necessary as you didn't know. Thanks anyway though. I just don't understand all of the game comments I get here. The higher hormone levels of game type birds actually hinder feather growth. I won't waste him. I've bred him already a few times. His tail reached 6 Ft 9 inches before I cut it back so he could breed. There are more photos of him on the site linked in the video description. I've been working with long-tailed fowl since mid 2002. Not long, but I've enjoyed it. :)
its a work of art, but keep in mind his quality.. his fighting characteristics, nowadays, the looking of a cock or fowl is not as relevant as his fighting
@elmimi274 Fighting doesn't enter into it. These birds were never, ever bred for fighting and he has no game ancestry whatsoever. He is 62.5% Onagadori, 12.5% Ohiki, and the rest is a blend of non-molting fowl bred in the U.S. by Mrs. Toni-Marie Astin. I don't know where people are getting this talk of fighting game in my bird. You're not the first to make this reference. It's absolutely irrelevant.
@davis84ful Since when isn't a chicken a bird? lol Also, this kind of "chicken" isn't 100% chicken. In the mid 1990s University of Georgia at Athens found distinct segments of green Jungle Fowl genetics in their DNA. They are hybrid derived fowl.
@raregallus From my reading I believe all chickens come from "jungle fowl." This is just a chicken, not a pheasant, not a fowl, just a chicken bred for specific traits.
@zubery You're correct in that all chickens do descend from Jungle Fowl, but there are four species of Jungle Fowl: Gallus gallus, Gallus varius, Gallus sonneratii, and Gallus lafayetii. It is already science fact that all chickens do not come from Gallus gallus alone. Yellow skinned breeds also come from Gallus sonneratii. Still other Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese breeds also contain Gallus varius. Sometimes a "chicken" isn't just a descendant from Gallus gallus.
@dragonvue09 No, not a Pheasant exactly. However, not really a "chicken" either. Not as we usually think of them anyway. There's a splash a green jungle fowl in the background; centuries ago.
@gokory You seriously thought he was a Chabo? The breed that has a tall, upright tail and is extremely short legged? What about him looks anything like a Chabo? His tail is below horizontal and his legs are about a mile long. LOL Sorry, no ill intent... I'm just amazed. His longest tail feather grew to 6' 9" before I cropped it for breeding a few days ago. @raregallus yes i thought he was a chabo, his tail feathers are long and flowing and my Chabo roosters have pretty long legs buddy and your chicken does not look very big in this video which is why i asked if he was a bantam
@gokory I am sorry, I'm just very stunned by this. Chabo tails stick straight in the air in a position near what would be termed squirrel tail in most other breeds, do not grow excessively long, the breed has a short U shaped back, only the legs of culls are long, and they weigh a maximum of 26 oz by standard. How do I know this? I used to raise Chabo myself. I am failing to see any similarities. My bird was only one year old in this video. They mature, grow and gain weight until at least 18 mo.
@raregallus i am sorry but my Japanese Black Tailed Bantam is a cull i bought from a flock of birds that was usually used as show birds, the reason i bought him is because he had a mutation, his tail doesnt stop growing, they do not know why he has this rare genetic disorder but it makes him very intrigueing because his tail dwarfs his body, perhaps your cock is a White Yokohoma?
@gokory Now that is interesting. As long as it is only the feathers that continue to grow and not the tail itself it would be a mutation, but not necessarily a disorder. If he does by chance have a rare mutation such as that, it could be non-molting; a mutation from Mt+ to mt. No, my bird is not a Yokohama either. He is roughly 62.5% Onagadori and the rest is a blend of Ohiki and non-molting fowl from a friend's line. No pure Onagadori are known in the US, but I am working towards that goal.
@raregallus yes it is just his tail feathers. and I have heard of Onagadori purebreds in the us but not pure white ones, yours is a beautiful bird in any situation

They were popular with the rulers of Pakistan who bred them for fighting purposes. It is difficult to keep Aseels in close quarters due to their agressive tendencies...........................
@MissMysterics Birds usually molt once a year in the fall. Non-molting just means that they do not molt regularly every year. It may take two to four years, or longer, for the feathers of the tail and saddles to stop growing.

That depends on if any exist in your country, and, if not, what your government's import regulations are. There are some breeders of pure stock in Germany.
No, he's not a Phoenix or a bantam. He's from my own line of non-molting fowl and weighs almost 4 Lbs. They have yellow legs. He ended up with 32" saddles and a 52" tail in juvenile feathers. I'm waiting to see what his adult feathers will do. These birds must be kept warm year round and fed a very specific diet; absolutely no corn at all, it's lethal to them.
Phoenix would make an easier alternative for you to keep. They are less demanding.
Hi, Your profiles says you live in Saudi Arabia. I absolutely can not ship eggs outside of the contiguous 48 US states. I can not even ship to Hawaii, much less another country. It is prohibited by law and if customs finds them in transit there are heavy fines and personal property confiscation penalties.
There are some breeders in Europe. I don't know if they could ship to you or not. Maybe if you and the breeder can obtain the right permits and veterinarian inspection of the flock.
My birds are not pure Onagadori, but I heard a while back that a man in Germany was selling some pure roosters for around $1,500.00 each. You may contact him. You'll have to write him in German. His website is rassegefluegelzucht(dot)de/rasseninfos/onagadori(dot)html I have no idea if he can ship or not, but if he can it would be very expensive with permit fees.
Grasias for desirme and for answering me if that costs great but better not if it(he,she) costs very much and I do not have time and I want to be your friend if me asentas
In addition to blending feed each morning, I have to clean, groom, and exercise each rooster every day.
They are a lot of work. The only spare time I have is early morning before the birds wake, noon time to eat lunch, and evening after the birds go to bed; day after day all year round.
Hears fellow I am of the state of mexico and like me these animals tenia one but me murio of old by that I last me muchiximo want to conciguir one cuanto you cost and where achieve them dode ayga muchoz by fas
oye amigo yo soy del estado de mexico y me gustan esos animales tenia uno pero se me murio de viejo por que me duro muchiximo quiero conciguir uno cuanto te costo y donde los consigo dode ayga muchoz por fas
I blended that line myself using mostly a hen that a friend acquired from a Japanese family living in the US. I added in a small amount of Ohiki, which is a related long-tail, and have selected back to type for what I want. Please see my website for more info about the birds. They are an incredible amount of work. You need lots of time, space, and devotion to raise them well. They require special diets, winter heating in cold climates, and lots of one on one time with their handler.
is this a species of chicken cause its so pretty.

Japanese roosters have very long tail.

what is it?
wildwagon 1 year ago
from non-molting lines huh? So the feathers never fall out? Or do they just take ages like human hair?
MissMysterics 1 year ago
@MissMysterics Birds usually molt once a year in the fall. Non-molting just means that they do not molt regularly every year. It may take two to four years, or longer, for the feathers of the tail and saddles to stop growing.

He is a blend of non-molting long tail lines here in the US and a little Ohiki as well. He is 12.5% Ohiki.
raregallus 2 years ago
your cock is beautiful but bale for the fight? I do not think
jzeliyo 2 years ago
No, he's not a fighting bird. He's just for looks. A trophy pet, of sorts.

where i can get this in malaysia...
very nice one...
bose5281 2 years ago
That depends on if any exist in your country, and, if not, what your government's import regulations are. There are some breeders of pure stock in Germany.
raregallus 2 years ago
that one looks awesome, please tell me where can I have one in the US. Is it white phoenix bantam? Tks!
mrD7641 2 years ago
No, he's not a Phoenix or a bantam. He's from my own line of non-molting fowl and weighs almost 4 Lbs. They have yellow legs. He ended up with 32" saddles and a 52" tail in juvenile feathers. I'm waiting to see what his adult feathers will do. These birds must be kept warm year round and fed a very specific diet; absolutely no corn at all, it's lethal to them.
Phoenix would make an easier alternative for you to keep. They are less demanding.

dose this chicken have more vertebrates then the average chicken or dose it just have long tail feathers?
chaosjut 2 years ago
No, only the feathers grow long. Some breeds such as the Araucana do have fewer than normal vertebrae though.
raregallus 2 years ago
hi,,, how nice its a beautifull how can i get one..? pls rply i really like it
butbahsasab 2 years ago

His website is rassegefluegelzucht(dot)de/rasseninfos/onagadori(dot)html I have no idea if he can ship or not, but if he can it would be very expensive with permit fees.

raregallus 2 years ago
Grasias for desirme and for answering me if that costs great but better not if it(he,she) costs very much and I do not have time and I want to be your friend if me asentas
isaidjonther 2 years ago
He is not for sale, but I do sell eggs sometimes. The eggs are $100 per doz and I do not guarantee a hatch. And I can not ship any outside of the US.
These birds must be housed protectively in enclosed buildings and they can not eat corn. It makes them sick.
They eat whole oats, brown rice, cabbage, fish, eel, shrimp, diakon greens, nira, cranberries, and hard boiled egg.
They can not live on commercially produced chicken feed. It is not correctly formulated for them.
raregallus 2 years ago
In addition to blending feed each morning, I have to clean, groom, and exercise each rooster every day.
They are a lot of work. The only spare time I have is early morning before the birds wake, noon time to eat lunch, and evening after the birds go to bed; day after day all year round.

It reminds me of rapunzel.

Hears fellow I am of the state of mexico and like me these animals tenia one but me murio of old by that I last me muchiximo want to conciguir one cuanto you cost and where achieve them dode ayga muchoz by fas
isaidjonther 2 years ago
Hi, I can't send eggs outside of the US. The USDA won't even allow me to send eggs to Hawaii, one of our own states.
Are you really sure you want to care for birds like this? They require care almost 24/7.
They require special feed, can not eat chicken food. They also must have special housing. If they even see a hen, the feathers stop growing.
They are a lot of work. Taking care of them takes almost the whole day.

dude where can i buy that kind of blood line
papalagoy 2 years ago
I blended that line myself using mostly a hen that a friend acquired from a Japanese family living in the US. I added in a small amount of Ohiki, which is a related long-tail, and have selected back to type for what I want. Please see my website for more info about the birds. They are an incredible amount of work. You need lots of time, space, and devotion to raise them well. They require special diets, winter heating in cold climates, and lots of one on one time with their handler.
