  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus, adios

  • Very Good!!!

  • Great cover! For some reason I love the part starting @ 0:47 in this song.

  • @Gitarrus

That's because the melodic use of the chords and phrasing is incredible ! I love it a s well !

  • Good cover

    Thank you for link!!!

    Brazilian guitar. =)

Check Marcel Ziul songs in youtube

  • very nice interpretation of your music!

I also recorded a power play this music.

    congratulations from Brazil

  • nice take,.checkout my shawn lane cover

  • you look like a nice dude, and cool playing and guitar is it an ibanez s?

  • great guitar ,great sound and great playing

  • oh by the way: can you please tell me where you've got the backing track from? i want to learn the song too. would be great, please let me know. :-)

  • @sathomaso Hi - the backing track and tab were in the September 2008 Guitar Techniques magazine. I've just found a link on the shawn lane website to a bunch of backing tracks including this. I'll update the video description with the link (it won't display a url in the comment I think)

  • @tsumabiken THANK YOU! :)

  • haha i like the grin at 1:16 ;) :D ... well played man, well played :D

  • really good, i like it

  • @sthelens07 thanks 8)

  • Great!! I love the way you smiled @ 2:41

  • what a brave man... i woudnt dare to play that song even if i have a gun pointing to my head

  • @Cocox2 lol - fair call ;-)

  • @Cocox2 Powers of 10 was from another planet , this was the "normal song" lol

  • thanks for the comments - including your thoughtful critique @shawnhalen - Shawn did have an incredible touch on every note, you're right

  • Fantastic!

  • The fact that you can play that even remotely close to Shawn is remarkable. Awesome job!

  • Absolutely fabulous tone! Great feel as well.

  • Absolutely sublime, my friend. I truly think Shaun himself would be impressed :)

    Keep it up!

  • @kibijit Moreover, I think Shawn would be truly honored that someone would set out to learn his stuff...he, especially in the spoken recordings, seemed like such a humble and affable guy, never arrogant. Well spoken, my friend.

  • Great feel man...Shawn look this!!

  • @pippotones thanks mate 8)

  • amaing job, 5 stars n sub :)

  • thanks for listening ... not to mention the rating and subbing ^_^

  • no prob, you deserve it :P

  • you touch the godhood that is Shawn here. nice cover.

  • Wow O_O thank you 8)

  • Awesome cover... Now... That's tone!!! :D

  • Thanks for that - glad you liked it 8)

  • What an great tone Mate!

Any tips on the gear? Thats so near on what I am looking for.

  • Thanks - glad you like it 8)

I just used an AMT Electronics Fatal Tube, into a cabinet simulation, with some delay.

  • hey did u learn this by ear or tab, if tab, where from? also what guitar/amp/mic did u use? nice cover btw

  • By tab - definitely by tab ;-) It was in an issue of Guitar Techniques magazine - along with the backing track.

The guitar is a custom from ASH Customworks (I did a video recently talking about it). I didn't use an amp; I used my AMT Electronics Fatal Tube, with a cabinet simulation - I think using LAConvolver as a plugin in Garageband to add impulse responses.

    Cheers

  • @tsumabiken yeah thought it was from that mag, my mate learnt it through there as well :) kickass song.

  • Great tone man! Great playing...Shawn was the greatest. I think you came pretty close

  • Shawn was absolutely awesome. Glad you liked my attempt 8)

  • Nice job! I know what you are talking about. The whole song is very technical, even though it doesn't seem that way. I've worked really hard at getting it "just right". I don't think anybody can :) you got very close though. Especially with that hair flip at 2:23 haha

  • Thanks ^_^ I'd agree getting it perfect is beyond pretty much anyone but Shawn. Even Guthrie Govan on the GT cd didn't sound as smooth as Shawn - which really really tells you something O_o

  • yeah i listened to guthries version of get you back and i agree it's not as smooth especially on the string skipping pentatonic lick towards the end

  • And yet Guthrie is so far beyond us mortals it's ridiculous ...

  • Great job brother! Covering Shawn is always impressive when done well.

  • Thanks mate 8)

  • Nice job.... Good to see players NOT all about speed etc.. but more about melody and tone. I know its a cover, but still I get so much more out of something like this than 64 notes per second.

  • It's a great song. 8)

Even the slower, melodic stuff in this song I find pretty hard though - deceptively so. Add in getting the tone and feel, and it's really challenging before you even hit the craziness at the end.

Great song (did I say that already?) ;-)

  • m8 , have u heard 'The Way it has to Be' ,

by shawn , I think u should do a cover.

  • I have heard it, yes. Lovely song. It would be nice to cover, but I don't have a backing track, and I doubt that working it out and making one would be that high on my list at the moment (too much stuff to do :-/ )

    Good suggestion though 8)

  • fantastic

  • thanks 8)

  • hey man, amazing cover! I like your guitar tone too, it has that sweet vocal quality...

it would be nice to get that kind of tone out of my mesa road king, please share some tips, take care!

  • To be honest, I would little to no idea how to set a Road King. I've had next to no experience with tube amps; this tone is direct out of my AMT Fatal Tube distortion pedal, with cab sim and delay.

  • dude this is amazing man, seriously, id be proud to have this song under my belt, and as good as you played it. i think you should do grey pianos :)

  • thanks very much 8) I have done a Gray Pianos cover. Messy, but fun 8)

  • Very good , i love this song

    excellent

    5/5 points

  • Thank you - I'm glad I didn't spoil it for you ;-)

  • lol at a glance you look like petrucci

  • lolz - except I don't melt the strings with my picking ;-)

  • at a glance, i thought he was Guthrie Govan hehe

  • dude, sounding sweet.awesome tone.i see that your using dimarzio rail buckers in middle and neck, what you got in the bridge.just being nosy as im building a custom strat and looking for pickup inspiration.

    sounds sweet.good job!!

  • Thanks for that 8)

The bridge pickup is a DiMarzio Breed (bridge model). The neck and middle are both DiMarzio Cruisers (neck model, both of them)

  • i think you should doa gray piano's flying or rules of the game cover

  • O_o Well I've found some backing tracks - I'll have to test my ears out ;-)

... not to mention my fingers :-/

  • Working on Gray Pianos Flying now. It's getting there ... kind of ;-)

  • Very nice. Good job on covering one of the most beautiful electric guitar pieces of all time.

Question, though... That string skipping solo, is it played in groups of sixes, or groups of eights?

  • Thank you very much 8)

It's (mostly) groups of ten O_o Three notes on the top string and 3 on the G string. Down all 6 then back up makes 10. Of course Shawn actually mixed it up a heap.

  • nice cover! is that a carvin?

  • Thanks 8)

Nope - not a Carvin. It's a (mostly) custom which I'm planning to explain/demonstrate in an upcoming video 8)

  • Great job on emulating the tone. It's very close.

Some execution mistakes here and there that could have been avoided (unwanted strings sounding etc...)

The outro needs some polishing, some of the fast runs need more work.

But great job overall, you nailed the Shawn vibe.

  • Thanks for that. I agree totally with your critiques. I really should spend more time on those runs ... and on avoiding string noise.

  • Good job man, really beautiful tone and playing, seriously, pat yourself on the back right now.

90% of the people on the internet post themselves without having anything even slightly impressive to show, you just did a wonderful cover of arguably one of the greatest guitartists of all time.

    Well done!

  • O_O

    ... speechless, here

  • Oh, and thanks!! :-D

  • yea! what he said!

  • cool man ..... !!! great job

  • Cheers for that 8)

  • This is the best recreation of Lane's tone I've heard.

  • O_O Thanks. ^_^

I'm still trying to get some of the sharp quality that he had as well as keeping the fullness.

  • Very nice. The second half of the song was a bit worse but I still enjoyed it very much. And you've got an awesome tone. What did you use to achieve it? I'm gonna give this vid a 4 :) Btw, you've got hair like Guthrie Govan :P

  • Thanks. The second half/solo is definitely significantly harder than the first :-/

The tone was my Ash customworks guitar, with DiMarzio Breed humbucker, into my AMT Electronics Fatal Tube, with a cabinet sim and a couple of delays 8)

  • could you tell me which cabinet sim did you use exactly? Software + cab model + mic emulation

  • My GR demo expired, so I don't have it - or the settings - anymore, and can't be sure of what I had, sorry.

It was a Mesa 4x12 and an "Ultrasonic" 4x12, I think. One mic'd with an sm57, and the other I mic can't recall, but I think something 421 (??)

Now I'm using impulse responses/convolution. I like it more so far. 8)

  • Do you use some kind of interface or just plug in into your sound card? Which soundcard or interface do you use? Awesome, I mean awesome tone and playing.

  • I have an adaptor to plug the lead from my pedal(s) straight into the line in on my iMac.

Thanks heaps for the good words 8)

  • Nice work man... cool guitar too..

  • Cheers for that. I'm very happy with the guitar 8)

Your version of GYB is cool 8)

  • Great!

  • thanks! 8)

  • what a beautiful sound man.. against what lot of people believe, it´s very very hard to find a good distorted sound...and you did it!

  • Thanks for that 8) I'm pretty how with my tone's going at the moment, and it's nice I'm not the only one ^_^

  • pretty *happy*, I meant ;-)

  • Of course I don´t forget that the sound is 80% in your playin´, so... 20 %congratulations for your good use of the machines, and 80% congratulations for your playin´, man!

  • i'm having a little trouble with the part at 2:30 in your video. i see you're sweeping a bit of it?

anyway, great stuff man. you look like you're having a fucking blast! this song is too fun!

  • Not sweeping; it's a thing Shawn Lane did a lot: pick a note on one string, then hammer-on one note per string on the next strings down.

Anyway, short of the solo, that section was (is) the bit that has caused me the most difficulty. I can try to show it close/slow if you like.

  • demonstration vid uploaded 8)

  • Hi dude , great cover & feeling ^^ , could you send me the backing track , I'm interested in ^^ , it would be great ;-D

  • Thanks for that 8)

I'll have a look for the backing.

  • Your interpretation is amazing!! So passionate! No robotic

    Finally a soul player!!!

  • Wow - thanks man 8) Every time I play it I do my best ^_^

  • nice job that tone had a lotta feeling to it and you played it great

  • Cheers 8) Still a way to go though ...

  • nice playing dude, kool sound set up, rock on !!!!

  • Thanks ^_^

  • Kick ass bro! I like pretty much 2:27 onwards!

  • Cheers Rob 8) You pick the part I nicked for Zilly? ;)

  • Lol, classic, cool tune, I havent heard the original but its sounded good man!

  • Nice tone and guitar. Good job dude, Shawn Lane was and is the best 4*

  • thanks for that. 8) Shawn certainly remains untouched
