  • This is the most artistic opening I have ever seen

  • Comment removed

  • cool

  • 4:50 =D

  • I really do love this movie <3 i saw this before I actually read the book and even though there still is a Ummmm UHHH part, some of it is amazing! Although I wish they did lean more toward the book.. and actually call him Erik instead of "Phantom". Still very good though :P

  • glad they kept that scene from the stage show and expanded and embellished on the idea.

  • 4:45 Gentlemen?...

  • @Galeregil he is saying gentleman to the guys to have to raise the chandelier telling them to raise the sheet up

  • @MsSsunshine13 I know why he says it, I was just creating a bookmark, for myself and others, as to when the song begins.

  • LOL really neat.

  • I love the opera version best

  • the overture xcites me :D

  • I prefer the delivery of lot 666 in this version rather than the one I saw on Broadway or in the London recording. There are points on which the movie may be a disappointment, but the Overture is not one of them.

  • I remember watching this scene in the theatres and immediately thought: "Oh yeah, I'm gonna love this movie!" and I did! I still do.

  • This is stolen music!!! WEBBY is a fake, a fraud, a parasite on the creative genius ov Roger Waters AND floyd!!!!!!!!!!

  • People disliked this because they became so overwhelmed by the power of The Phantom's chandelier, they couldn't make out which button was the like button.

  • Now that is one EPIC opening to a movie!

  • Love this song!

Check out me doing "Music of the night" at this years Britain does variety regional finals in kettering, Northamptonshire. Hope I did it justice! Please comment me so I know what I did good and what I can improve on, thanks! :)

  • This has got to be the best all time dramatic musical movie EVER!!! Everytime the chandelier goes up it gives my mom shivers down the spine. You can just feel the Phantom's powerfulness...

  • those who dislike this video shall be crushed , driven before us and we shall hear the lamentation of their women. The Marv has Spoken

  • That was creepy.!

  • Lot 666.... lol

  • I think the main thing that confuses everyone about whether it's Madame Giry or Meg is how young she looks. She is obviously in much better health than Raoul, despite being about 15-20 years older. Raoul probably has early-onset Parkinson's which would explain his tremor and inability to walk much. It would have been really great if they cast a woman in her 90s who looked like her.

  • It freaks me out when Raoul asks the monkey "Will you still play when all the rest of us are dead?"

  • they should have gone down into the tunnels at the start with this music it would have been spectacular

  • When the chandelier is uncovered and the wind starts to blow, you really feel the chill in your spine. It says to you "Something terrible happened here"... and as the opera house comes to life again, you think "Oh my god, I'm going to live it". I can't imagine better rendition of this part of the musical.

  • I thought the opera house had burned down...?

  • @ilove2fishsalmon Well, They either built some of it back or the fire didn't completely destroy the building.

  • It's too bad that cant be done live on stage

  • Strangely, i own the movie and this is the part that i remember the most. thats so stupid of me!!!!!

  • madame giry is still a bad ass i see ;) and so is the raising of the chandelier gives me chills everytime the organ starts playing!!

  • this movie inspired me 2 go in2 theatre

  • this movie made inspired me 2 go in2 theatre

  • Lot 666. The Chandelier.

  • @luigi90900 663... to be precise...

  • @kloop2 wow, I'm an idiot XP... your right.. sorry to interject there XP

  • I knew it! I just noticed that that old lady was Christine's friend.

  • @ihopeutubedies I thought it was Mme Giry herself. If Meg hadn't married, they'd have called her Mademoiselle or something. But then again, Raoul is now a doddering old man, so maybe it is Meg.

  • I've seen the Phantom of the Opera on stage before in London. It was awesome.

  • I get chills each time i watch this! I love it!

  • Iv been a fan of phantom of the opera sense i was 8. read the books and seen the silent film. and i agree. that this opening is by far the best.

Granted it now has the special effect for it.

  • that was an great illumination :D

  • i wish i could hear from 4:50 to 6:07 all day over and over again in my head

  • i love this

  • i love this

  • i love this scene

  • I own this movie on dvd& blu-ray i love this scene so much especially after the chandelier is unveiled and the opera populaire comes back to life!

  • I never realized that music at :55 is the "I remember there was mist...." song.

  • What an AWESOME intro.

  • ....and THAT is how you start a movie

  • boobies lol

  • im obsesed with this movie i could watch it over and over i went and saw it live its such a well put together movie tho michael crawfords voice cant be beat but they did a good job i love it how they reverted back to after the event to start off with the chanderlier gives me goose bumps still and always will :)

  • One of my favorite parts. Who am i kidding? I can't pick just one thing thats my favorite out of this entire masterpiece!

  • Lot 666: The Chandelier.

    How appropriate.

  • no i think its madame gury b/c meg had no conection to teh phantom like her mother did. Also you can tell by the way they look @ each other in the beginning of this scene, they look as if they are shocked to see old friends, then again the auctioneir called her madame gury.

  • @bomby4130 It has to be Meg because Meg becomes Christine's maid after this story ends and never gets married...also in the sequel Madame Giry dies and Christine and Raoul are only in their 30's

  • Now that ive thought more about it, I believe it was Meg and not her mother. In the movie Madame Girey wasnt THAT old, so it is possible that its her. But then I remember the way Meg looked at the Phantoms mask at the end of "track down the murderer". She looked at it with such compassion..the same way her mother felt about Phantom himself. I believe that Meg inherited that empathy from her mother and its possible she took her mothers place as his "guardian" when she died. imo

  • -Book Spoiler-

In the book Erik (The Phantom) died a few weeks after he let Christine and Raul go.

  • Comment removed

  • @hsmbabyv i remember that

  • @hsmbabyv Yea. that's the book. In the musical, he lives on still loving her.

  • That was beautiful!! ♥

  • I do believe this may be one of the greatest scenes in movie history. So powerful, it sends chills down my spine each and every time.

  • At 3:29 u can hear a "cough" then Madame Girey stops bidding. Thats how the Phantom has communicated with Girey in the past, so that leads me to believe that he is still alive and Madame Girey is still helping him. It cant be Meg, otherwise she would be Madame "whatever her married name was". Christine was right. The Phantom really did haunt them till they died. imo LUV this movie!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Pokadot101

    Sequel Spoiler

(not as bad as hsmbaby)v Meg stays with Christine all her life so it could be Meg. Besides in the play Raoul is in his 70's at this point. There is no freaking way Madame Giery is still alive. Phantom well, he's magical is it's possible.

  • And I still can't believe that the guy who placed nipples at the Batsuit did this.

  • God Joel Schumacher did an excellent job with this movie

  • No he didn't.

  • yes they do. he goes back into hiding and doesn't come out until christine's death.

  • Love Never Dies is after the events at the theatre, and the Phantom evidently does see Christine again. In Coney Island, NY. It takes place a good few years later, too.

  • I remember when I first saw this in theatres and I almost lost it during this scene. I thought it was perfect.

  • Yes, this lady is Meg ;) Madame Giry's dauther.

  • Wow... 5:35 it's so beautiful when the melody of the organ speeds up <3

So, the old man is Raul and the lady is... the blonde-haired friend of Christine? Meg ?

  • so spooky whith the chandelier

  • the old man isnt the phantom, thats the other guy that liked christine, who is dead, i dont know where the phantom is though

  • well, no one really knows what happened to the phantom in this movie.

    SPOILER ALERT!!

after Christine and Raul escape the phantom disappears and is never seen again.

  • i just went to see this in real life as a play and OMFG WAS IT AWESOME it was teh the best

if you live in the milwaukee area u can still het tickets b4 the 30th of august

  • OMG I WENT TOO!! It WAS awesome!!!

  • how is the phantom still alive at this time?? dude how old would he be? awesome, i love everything about the play and the movie, ive seen it on broadway and it was a spiritual moment

  • This scene was unbelievable in the theater! :) Thanks for posting!

  • It is the origional Madam Giry and she is still working for the phantom. You can hear him "clear is throat" to signal to her to stop bidding....I LUV this movie and soundtrack :D

  • really? r u sure thats him clearing his throat?? awesome!!!!

  • Raoul probably is about 70 and in the film he was about 25, i dont think Madame Giry is 50, I think that she is about 40, which would mean she is in her 80's which sounds about right. Also, it cant be Meg for two reasons:

    1) At the auction he says its Madame Giry

    2) If she is Madame, that means she is married, and if it was Meg she would have changed her name so it would be Madame ______ not Giry. Anyway, if it was Meg, why would she want to buy the music box? Thats how i see it anyway lol x

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva I think it's Meg. Madame is a title for anyone who is married or over the age of 30, and there is a sequel and Madame Giry dies in it, and Meg stays with Christine all her life, and the Phantom and his monkey make their epic return!!!!

  • @nibblesfan What sequel is this? x

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva It's a book called the Phantom of Manhattan. It definately lacks something that is in the original, but is still a decent story.

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva

well, in those days, all women of the theater were called madame to dissuade the over zealous males from trying to harass the actresses. it gave them some small protection my making them think that they had a husband to protect them. it was also known as being 'married' to the theater. so there is a very very large change that it IS Meg.

so if meg never married, and she stayed in the theater for any amount of time as a actress, she would have been known as madame giry.

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva

You do realize that in your theory that you say Raoul and Madame Giry have a 15 year age difference. And then you propose that they have a 10 year age difference during this clip. Kiiinda doesnt make sense....

  • @namelykarlee no i said in her 80's which is anything from 80 to 89 meaning that if Raoul was 70 she could be up to 19 years older than him x

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva

Fair enough, I missed that before. My mistake, sorry. =]

  • @iluvmesammydog4eva but in the book Madame Giry says, when she is recalling her first encounter of the phantom, that he called her Madame Jules because that is what her late husbands name was so it could be Meg and that her husband passed away and retook her name. Just a little useless bit of info

  • @sirspamsalot2 This indeed tends to happen in France; similarly, you'll rarely ever call a woman mademoiselle when she's past 40 unless she's a school teacher (and in that case it didn't matter if she was unmarried, although my grandmother mentioned that she was essentially barred from religious schools as a teacher after her wedding because married teachers were frowned upon)

  • @agnosticnixie I figured that too, its the same way in Germany, calling an older unmarried woman Fraulein is frowned upon there

  • I would also like to point out that both The Really Useful Group, and Joel Schumacher, after hearing that people thought it was Meg, have both said that the woman in the auction scenes of both the stage musical and movie, are indeed Madame Giry.

  • @TheStrangerDied THANK YOU. It's Madame Giry, everyone, stop arguing.

  • Let's just clear this up for everyone - The old man in the wheelchair is Raoul, and the woman, who is in fact that actress who played Madame Giry, is Meg, her daughter. The auctioneer calls her Madame Giry because that is her name - she never married. Meg Giry.

  • How do you know this? I am just curious. It could have very well been Madame Giry, she was most likely in her 40's or 50's during the Phantom's reign, and while it was rare, but people did live into very old age, even in the late 1800's and early 1900's, so it could have been her at the auction

  • Well, Raoul is obviously very old, I would say seventy at least. During the rest of the movie, Madame Giry looks, I agree, about 50, and Raoul is about, say 25? So, by my logic, Madame Giry is 25 years older than Raoul. So, if Raoul is 70, than she's 95!! The woman doesn't look that old to me, and most people didn't live to be that age anyways. Meg, however, is, let's say, 10 years younger than Raoul. Does the lady look 85? I would say so, or a little younger. *shrugs* It makes sense to me.

  • Like I said, The Really Useful Group (ALW's company), and Joel Shumacher (the film's director), have both dismissed the idea that is it Meg. Officially, IT IS Madame Giry.

  • I know very well who Joel Shumacher is, although I didn't know about the Really Useful Group, and I understand that it is "officially" Madame Giry.

LOGICALLY, however, it is Meg. And I will stand by that point to the end of time so I suppose we are at a draw and this argument can cease to exist, correct?

  • If my logic appears faulty to you, I would like to hear that, though. It makes sense to ME, but I wouldn't be surprised if I am the only one in the world that can understand my rambling. If you want me to clarify something, I will be HAPPY to oblige.

(Haha, and I don't normally talk like that, no. I get FORMAL with my speech when I'm arguing, I haven't the faintest idea why.)

  • I didn't realize we were arguing. To me it is, and always will be Madame Giry, if the woman is Meg to you, I have no problem with that. I just wanted to make it clear that, officially, it is Madame Giry. End of discussion.

  • It's arguing to me because I'm...there's no other word, arguing my case for Meg, and you for Madame Giry.

I have no problem with you and everyone else in the world thinking it's Madame Giry. By all means, continue!!!

Haha yes, let's just shut up, shall we???? : )

  • Lol I was so confused because I was like, "Why is Mme Giry younger than Raoul??" Ohhhh wait it's Meg. :P It might have been a better idea to just make-up the actress who played Meg...

Btw, SICKK overture. My fav part of the movie. Mmhmm. Well, besides "Point of No Return." Come to think of it, all the parts are my favorite lol

  • I really wish they hadn't redesigned the chandelier. It looks nothing like the one in the Paris Opera House, which the one in the stage show was meant to resemble!

  • The chandelier in the Opera Garnier actual has a shape more like the one in the film, but neither of them really resemble it closely.

  • Yeah, the one in the film is just a crystal chandelier. The one in the stage show more closely resembles the real one but it's more "watered down" and shaped to fit on stage.

  • There is another production of Phantom, though I have not been able to find much info, or whether or not it's the ALW production, but it's chandelier closley resembles the Opera Garnier chandelier.

  • the old man is Roul and the lady is Madame Giry. They say their names and show their faces.

  • The phantom lives on!!! It's so sad that he gave the ring back to Cristine's grave! She should've chosed the phantom! The darkness would've saved her!

  • The auctioneer looks like President Taft

  • I mean the old man, who bought the monkey. . Or is it Raoul? And who is the old lady?

  • The lady is madame Giry

  • i thought it was meg since madam giry is long dead and the old man is raul. the black and white verison is the future because of the electric light that the auctioneer mentioned.

  • @learningtofitin Meg doesn't have the same look as her mother.

  • the old man is Raoul, that's why at the end he was at Christine's grave. the old lady is madame giry

  • i thought the old lady was meg!

  • The old man is Raoul, the lady is Meg, Madame Giry's daughter. Madame Giry is dead, considering she would be over 100 years old and people typically didn't live past 50 back then.

  • I think, the man is the phantom. Or not?

  • thanks carolynroxsox 4 posting this totally brilliant

  • i love it !

  • at 4:08 his face almost made me cry ;_;

  • why do the ballet ppl dust their shoes in that chalk

  • chalk allows them to spin better

  • um, okay let me tell you that that is actually resin my friend =]

  • actually its "rosin" =)

  • Comment removed

  • it's called rosin. you put it on your pointe shoes to help you turn and it gives a little grip as well.

  • is that old man the Phantom? He reminds me of him. Of how he wanted that monkey so much.

  • That's Raoul, the man Christine marries. He wanted the monkey because she often spoke of it. (that's all I'll say, I don't want to spoil the movie)

  • no it's raoul.

  • I love when the monkey starts playing.

  • what is the song at 5:28? i kno it's the overture, just what song is it in the movie?

  • The Phantom of Opera..."In sleep he sang to me...in dreams he came...etc"

  • cool, we're watching this in music, and i really liked this part, so i decided to watch it on Youtube. We just heard that song today

  • Yeah, but the arragnement in the overture is really, really stunning. Im compleatly in love with the church organ. I must really hear it live one time, played on a major church organ. What a majestic intrument !

  • Man I love the overture of this show, I saw the show three days ago and it was a fantastic experience!

  • Bitchin shit man o.o

  • I like the sounds of organ and the melody itself....emm...realy, soo nice! many thanks to composer! The phantom of the opera and Jesus Christ superstar are my favorite music movies=)

  • What's the title of the song at 4:55? Anyone....desperate here

  • thats called the overture :)

  • The Phantom of the Opera is the title of the song at 4:55

  • its part of the overture... its the main theme of the Phantom and the entire musical, repeated various times in various keys, lyrics, and tempos in the movie. look for it and i'm sure u'll find the instances

  • The 'bang' made me jump a little. ;) Excellent scene.

    Wolfe

  • This scene and the last one are the best ones in this movie!

  • Who is the man in the wheel chair?

  • It's the older Raoul, the former patron and Christine's sweetheart (and I suppose widower husband if you see the end..)

  • the woman at the auction is meg giry, madame giry's daughter.

  • hm...news to me

  • are you silly wy have you stoppt this video befor the realy end of the song????

  • I love this transition :3

In the theater, first time seeing the Movie, I was like "Ohhh this movie's gonna have awesome transitions, I just know it."

Because I'm actually sitting in a theater watching a movie and thinking about transitions. ^^

  • The movie was good... the live production is a million times better, however.

But I love how they do the overture here.

  • i agree the live on broadway was just amazing! this part was one of the bests though i must agree..the music is just....wow

  • Amazing intro.... and movie/book/musical...

BTW thats awesome Lot 666 is the fallen chandelier...

  • This is an amazing transition and one of my favorite parts of the movie. Its surprising to see how young Giry looks here when Raoul is so old. In the "past" they looked like they were about the same age....

  • I haven't seen all of the movie, but am I right to guess that the Vicomte is Raoul?

  • yep

  • And that's madame Giry who loses the auction, right?

  • yep only because she let raoul win the phantom's most prized possesion

  • thats raoul?

  • (to ciaeric2) yep it is (49 years later)

  • actually no the old lady was Christines old friend. the blonde one. i foget her name -_-

  • nice transition!!!!

    awesome!!!

  • hmmm, i uploaded the entire movie just yesterday, please watch them, rate them, they're in high quality,is this same movie by Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossumm, hope you like it guys, and thanks

  • oh this is my favourite scene..

i love the phantom of the opera movie...

i like when their show the chandelier..

  • Amazing scene. By far my favorite. On another note, who just adores the music box?

  • OMG this part is amazing i love how they did it! It must have taken them a long time jus to be able to make it look like from the new days to the old

  • my favorite part in the whole movie! i love how everything goes from cobwebs and dust to clean and colorful all while the chandelier is rising!

  • this is the most artsy scene in a movie i have ever seen. bravo, everyone.

  • OOHHH lot 666 spooky!!!

  • Why did you cut it? IT DOESNT DESEVE TO GET CUTT!!!! XD jk. nice idea... but, just wondering. on all of your vids, why do you just cut a part out, and why does everyone obsess over it?!?

  • I don't know why it was cut, but I personally hate it because I can't stand to hear only part of a song.

  • Ah, what an awesome movie. I was the Phantom on a smaller, regional tour...it was AWESOME!
