The first song I played on a jutbox with my new steady of one hour, back in April of 62. two years and a month later we ran away and got married, And 48 and a half years later we are still happyly married. It was love at first sight.
I learned this song in, Jr. High and sang it to my children when they were young, a couple of weeks ago my Oldest daughter now 35, asked me to write the words down for her so that she can sing them to my grand daughter who is now eight . so I am doing that now
@Patch24es my brother would always tell me they were gonna find me in the river. made me cry. it made me hate my name but over the years I have learned to love it!
Americas wealthy do have a sence of humor, they call any one who might have a summer beach front home and it is on a time share plan PATCHES.Take care ADonovan43.
My parents had this song on a 45 and I used to make them play this song over and over and over....sometimes until I fell asleep. To be 4yrs old again.
Helencheddar, for what it's worth I agree. Sure, it's all romantic and tragic, but it's also stupid. You can't tell me that he couldn't have gotten a message to her somehow. And if he loves her so much he'll die for her, why couldn't he defy his parents?
How very sad. It is overwhelming and I feel that parents should not interfere in the love of their children. Understandably, parents are naturally concern when it concerns their children.
When my dad came back from Vietnam he bought a Akai tape recorder. I sang this song on the tape. The tape is gone but the memories live on. My dad passed away on June 21, 2011.
Am I the only one who thinks the guy from the song has very strange values "Oh I can't marry someone my parents don't approve of, but killing myself and causing other people to kill themselves is just fine!"
This is exactly why YT is great. Some twenty years ago I used to listen to this song my friend brought along on an old tape recording when we were railing through Europe. Been looking for it ever since but haven't found it until now. Only knew that the song was about a girl named Patches and now I know who made it also, splendid.
What sweet memories- listening to this and all the other songs of my youth on my transistor radio in bed late at night when my mom thought I was asleep! Thanks for posting.
I was named after this song 20 years after it came out. I keep having people ask me if this is really my name and I'm half tempted to carry a copy of my birth certificate to prove that this is my name!
1962; i remember nothing but being in Friendship House in Scranton, PA, attending parochial school, 3rd grade, and this fucking song, don't get me wrong though, but it was and still is a damn good song. well, i remember nothing more vivid than this goddamn housemother in that FH, who would beat us kids on the ass with a ping pong paddle; she's 6 ft. under now, but today there is a law against child abuse, and if she'd do that today if she were alive, she'd get hers. This song reflects that era
I listened to this song as a 12 year old and, quite frankly, thought it was a fiery load of maudlin crapolla. Hearing it today, I am rather proud of my adolescent sensibilities.
When I was little, my mom sang to us in the car. This was one of the songs, along with Teen Angel and Last Kiss. Kinda depressing for a 10 year old, but good memories.
I know and understand that young people today might be interested in contemporary music, but I can't help but think they are missing some of the greatest music ever. The 1950's and 1960's had so many wonderful songs. Both rock and folk. Also the tragedy songs like "Patches" and "Last Kiss" or "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. It's really kind of sad to me.But I have noticed a few younger people who visit songs like these. They are the lucky ones in my opinion.
@melvinquek17 that is completely ridiculous.there is still good music today. you just need to look for it. good music that truly touches the soul will never die.
This song still tears at my gut - for as a teenager (circa: 1960's) my father forbad me to date a most beautiful and shy Greek girl who lived in a lower class part of my hometown ... and that he did not consider Greeks to really be whites ... aaaaargh ...
This was the first song I ever sang on stage (I performed it in 1966) at my Jr High School Talent show (I came in second place) LOL after that the kids in school started calling me Patches I will always fondly remember this song......
Because a lot of music is aimed at Teens. Because statistics show that teens are the largest circle of whom is buying these records. Even today teens and young adults are buying the most CD's and therefore marketing is geared towards them! :-)
I've always loved this song. I know it[s a tragedy song. I would have married her and moved to another country.Becaue, the parents would eventually die.I would go with my heart.
@Maccaluver844 I ask myself that same question many times. I'm older and forget yesterday, but know 99% of the words to a big part of the hits of my teen and twenty-something years. If I ever get put away at least it shouldn't be boring. I will be able to entertain the others, even if I can't carry a tune in a bucket.
Wow love this song gee how old am I remember singing this before I got married and I have celebrated my 42nd wedding anniversary all good memories though cheers
I used to sing this song to my niece when she was little and now she sings it to her granddaughters. When ever I am over their place the great great nieces want me to sing them Patches.
