looks like a gig at festival hall london same line up i met sonny back stage what a nice man i asked him "mr rollins when you coming to play in Birmingham ( in the uk)" reply " do you think they will like me there " what a humble nice man " i told him id crawl there to see him " lol
If Chris Potter and Eric Alexander (who I enjoy very much) live as long as Sonny, they would only hope they could play with the drive, facility, and passion that Sonny has. Now 80 and still going.
As awesome a tenor master as Coltrane was, generally I get more pure pleasure from Sonny because he's so much about honoring melody in the classic sense. The guy's tone and concept manages to be manly but sentimental and sweet in a hip, strong way. What a brilliant artist full of humanity!
Don't get me wrong, Coltrane was a saint and a fucking genius, but while he tended to wail and shriek (righteously), Sonny just tells and sings his gorgeous soulful stories. 2 inspiring giants Peace
Sonny never tried to make himself commercial. It probably cost him a great deal, but to us it is a rare gift. He is truly one of the great sax players and song writers.
Listen to people like Cris Potter and Eric Alexander...they cut Rollins to shreads. Lets be honest, don't go by hyp go by truth. Don't go by politics, go by ability.
Sonny is a rare gem! One of the top tenorists of all time! Nobody has ever had his joyfullness, few his ability to improvise, his knowledge of music, a lot has control of the horn, but few has TOTAL control. His voice over the years is remmarkable! And on and on...

You people have got to be kidding or you are ingnorant of jazz music. Sonny Rollins is terrible on this cut. He sounds like a begginer and if you are apspiring to play like that you should not have far to go. Just terrible.....he nothing but a hype.
There was a girl named Jillian. Her parents left her at home alone for 3 hours. Each hour she recieved a phone call. It was a man and he just groaned then hung up. She got scared and locked the door. She decided to go hide in her bedroom. When she got there, there was a man hunched over holding a bloody knife. She screamed and then killed her. If you do not post this on at least 10 videos in the next 20 minutes the hunched man will come and appear in your room late at night one night
As always with Sonny Rollins to listen to him is a joy but to watch is even more inspirational. Whatever other qualities he has, above all, he epitomises the sheer joy of creating jazz. I also am driven to play by the joy and love that I feel for the music and each time I listen to or, better still, watch him especially in the live concert performances, it fires me up to work harder to reach even the borders of the magic world he and his music inhabit,
Mr. Sonny Rollins is absolutely amazing. I had the great honor to spend 45 minutes with him after his concert in Scottsdale, Arizona on 11-19-06. I even got to show him a video of me performing one of his classic tunes - "Blue Room". He's not only an amazing player but an amazing person as well. Check out some of the video that I have posted. I've got about 40 minutes or so that will eventually go up, dealing with improvisation, the great players from his youth, practice methods, etc.
Even a jazz novice knows that Sonny Rollins is still idolized by nearly every sax man who has followed him, including Chris Potter (which by-the-way is spelled with an "h" in Chris).
sonny rollins una leyenda! :)

I feel so blessed that I was exposed to this music at a young age and can still appreciate it's true wonder and majesty. Sonny Rollins is a Prince.

Mr Music himself. I feel so privileged to have seen him play in Boston.

Let's say I play sax and this guy ain't no beginner such control. Look back with all the greats and this is one of them.

No, he is not a beginner! As you and me know!
He's played the horn since he was 13 or some!
Let's say I "try" to play sax and we all "try" to play sax, that'll make me sleep better!
He's to me top 3, 4!

You're obviously a jazz novice. Put in another 20 years of listening and perhaps you'll have a clearer view.

if you said that to Chris Potter and Eric Alexander, they would look at you like you should be placed in a mental institution.

first off a beginner doesn't have tone quality and a vibrato like that
second sonny rollins is indeed idolized by many aspiring jazz sax players
