  • A great rally from Persian Punch but Thaljannah (not sure on the spelling there) was a bit unlucky to be the meat in the sandwich there.

  • Was in the crowd this day and have never seen a bigger roar for a winner

  • Possibly one of my favourite racehorses, and that's saying a lot. Great horse. RIP.

  • The BHA should definite bring in a group race named after Persian Punch

  • @MrStupidity25 Absolutely. Rarely does a flat horse touch the hearts of the public.

  • This fella was full of heart. He just never knew when he was beaten

  • Maiden plate? Fool! I might be wrong but I've got a feeling it was a Group 2. Only been a fan of racing for about 8 years n Persian Punch was one of the biggest battlers I've ever seen. My favourite, along with Cold Turkey- certainly not a great, but another battler, a hold-up horse (unless Mr Moore's trying to bring his handicap mark down!) that seems to simply barge the leading horses out of the way!

  • what grade of race is this with only 5 runners?Maiden plate?

  • first learn to count- there are 6.

  • @scrappy5011 Group Two. The runner up has won an English Classic & Group One's. Persian Punch was one of the most courageous horses of all time.

  • one and a half out you would have said persian punch was booked for 4th.

    what a game horse

  • A wonderful horse.... what a fighter!

    RIP old man.

  • Amazing performance this.....such a stirring performance. These type of horses perhaps possess qualities we look upto in people.

    RIP Brave Punch.

  • What a super horse and how well Martin Dwyer rode him in his last few races

  • I couldn't agree more with you guys, one of the toughest and bravest horses I have seen, especially on the Flat. How many times did he look beaten and then rally to get up an the post, terrific! Little known fact this, but did you know that when he went to David Elsworth's yard he was put into the stable just vacated by a certain Desert Orchid? Coincidence? Two of the bravest horses of the past 20 years and they both lived in the same stable.........

  • i fell in love with this horse , a true and true stayer he always gave his best and a few pounds won on him , r.i.p punchy

  • What a legend. Brings tears to my eyes still. Loved him to bits. One of his best wins ever!

  • sounds impossible, but I still miss him so much. was there that day and still the most magical race I have ever seen, what a thrill. what a horse he was !

  • What a character of a horse he was. Not a bone in his body was bread for losing...superb horse

  • It might sound like a strange thing to say, but his form was still being franked, even after his very sad death...Having won the doncaster Cup himself in 2003, the 2 horses he beat here were 1,2 in the 04Donc Cup, n then 1,3 in the 2005 Doncaster Cup, seperated by Sergeant Cecil , won himself won that race in 2006 when run at york. Theres no doubt on that evidence that he was the best, most consistent stayer over extreme distances for quite some time... won on him loads of times too..RIP old boy

  • punch used to seize up while walking home, elsworth would try to shout him up,great trainer but no love, elsworth was a great trainer but needed his great team that loved him,on his own he is useless.

  • great horse, great race, great warrior! He was such a good horse, he always tried his hardest and he never gave up, ever! RIP punch.

  • He had qualities rarely found in any human.

A wonderful being who brought so much pleasure to the average betting shop punter who has so little to look forward to in life.

    A true hero.

    RIP Punch.

  • he had that "never say die" attitude- what a horse!! 11 years old and still racing... he litterally ran his heart out:( rip punchy:)

  • what a horse he was

  • What a warrior

  • a true warrior. never to be forgotten

  • Such a brave horse - reminds me of Double Trigger - gutsy & courageous, very sadly missed.

Seen some sad sights on a racecourse but poor David Elsworth running down the track to care for his striken star on that gloomy Ascot day was very sad indeed.

    RIP Punch & thank you.

  • Great race by a great horse. Bang up there with the best. RIP Punch.

  • One of the most dour stayers racing has ever known!!

  • brings a tear to my eye!!!

  • the bravest horse of all time. what a legend he was. bless the punch!!!
