  • Does it make that sound just when warm or it doesnt matter ?

  • most likely it is the camshaft synchronizer. the sound would come from the left side of the engine. but it is hard to pin point because it echoes around and sounds like a pully.

  • Replace the tensioner they run probably around 60 bucks when it's making noise its worn out also replace your belt too I own a mobile auto repair sevice if you have any question feel free to ask me

  • Mine did the same thing but it wasn't internal...it was the belt tensioner which needs to be lubed...take a can of WD40 and get some behind the tensioner and inside of it to and get a 15mm wrench and work the tensioner back and forth a few times...the oil will work down inside where the spring is and I sprayed some belt dressing on the belt also...after awhile it stopped squeaking...key is to lube it and work it back and forth a few times.

  • Drivers side noise, sometimes sounds like it's coming from rear valve cover, bell housing area. Awesome post, thanks.

  • Correction again...RIGHT side of engine...

  • OK...I stand corrected...It does sound more like the camshaft position synchronizer, since it seems to be coming from the left side of the engine...Since I have a Taurus with a Vulcan...I know now what to expect eventually...Thanx YouTube...

  • Either the idler pulley, or there's a mouse living somewhere in that engine compartment lol!

  • ive look all overe the web and find that the syncranizer is bad if sqweeking id heard on driver side but isthe sensor bad if both polls termanals have ten volts with no pulse 2001 taurus 3.0L vin code U ?

  • cant stand people who give bad advice yes indeed its the camshaft sychronizer, im a certified technician and it happened to my 05 taurus. replaced and all is well $35 for the piece 30 mins to install for a novice

  • @alliwantisanameicanu

    who you calling numbnuts, numbnuts.

    it worked for me.

  • it is the idler pulley i squirted some silicone on it and it quits for a while .

  • @scroatt no it is not numbnuts, its the camshaft synchronizer get a clue nub

  • cam position senor is failed/ failing

  • sounds like the camshaft positioning synchronizer...it needs to be changed cuz if it is it can seize up your engine when it finally breaks

  • My Taurus makes the same noise. So if you find out what causes it, please do let me know. Lol

  • @ajm8990 its the camshaft position sensor and the the shaft my ford taurus made the same noise you need to replace both the sensor and the shaft hope everything works out for you.

  • It's probably those damn hamsters... Check your wheels, there should be a hamster wheel with a hamster in it on each one. If not, you'll need to replace them as necessary.

  • its a ford end of story

  • Could this cause my lifters to begin to click due to lack of oil circulation

  • Sounds to me like your belt tensioner or your idler pulley. My 02 Taurus did that and when i spray WD 40 it on the pulley bearing, it stopped for a few seconds.

  • @brandonya1990 , WRONG. Its the CMP (Camshaft Position Sensor) The Syncronizer is worn and needs to be replaced. Otherwise the oil pump can stop turning at ANY time and the engine will later seize from lack of lubrication.

  • That is absolutley the camshaft position syncronizer. The position sensor sits on top o fit, so replacing that is advised as well.

  • That's the camshaft position sensor. It's a common failure on the 12 valve Taurus engine.

  • mine did that. its the crank sensor. if you put your hand on it you can manipulate the noise.

  • @ramblinman73 There is a difference between a "Crank" CKP (Crankshaft position sensor) and a "Cam" CMP (Camshaft position sensor) This is the CMP.

  • That's a belt...

  • @Kpeters You couldn't have been further from the real problem. This is the CMP Syncronizer out of spec. It needs to be replaced. Simply dismissing a squeak as the belt in this case can cause catastrophic engine failure (The CMP syncro drives the oil pump). so before dismissing it as "Just the belt" do some research.

  • @Kpeters It drives the oil pump on this engine. Sorry, Not all CMP's drive the oil pump, but in the case of the 12v Vulcan, it does.

  • @mediarocker543 Sorry thanks for the tip but I don't see how a cranckshaft position sensor would make that noice and drive the oil pump? Isn't the pump driven by chain on Vulcans? Please elaborate im interested.

  • @Kpeters The CMP (Camshaft position sensor) makes this sound because it is inserted into the block and has a gear that makes contact with the camshaft (since its an OHV engine, the camshaft is located near the middle of the block) at the bottom of the CMP Syncronizer Assembly (the name given to the gear drive) is a square or hexagonal female end, which connects to the oil pump drive deep in the block. The squeeking is caused by worn or shot bearings and at any time they could seize

  • @Kpeters stopping the syncronizer assembly from rotating, and in turn, stopping the oil pump. The major caveat about the Taurus control system, is it has a NO oil pressure light, that usually only illuminates AFTER the severe damage has been done. Personally I wished they had an Oil pressure gauge, but that's just me. The Vulcan's drive system is unique, because of its Camshaft driven oil pump.

  • @Kpeters The Sensor sits on top of the syncronizer assembly, and on the top of the syncronizer assembly is a rotating tooth. When you put the sensor on top of the syncronizer assembly (either Hall effect or other type which I cannot remember at the time of writing) it detects the tooth movements and functions accordingly.
