Got my lessons with bsm booked, so excited, is there a good chance I will be driving a corsa? My mates using a mini but hes with someone else, I like corsas:D
I wonder why driving schools use diesel engines which i think are quite easy to drive because they don't stall easily and you can move the car with the clutch without putting any gas, i think they should teach students with petrol engines which is more difficult, I am a new driver, i hardly stall a diesel engine, but i stall a petrol engine constantly which i hate.
@TheTman307 I agree it does not you can watch all the video's you want but trying to do this is a complete nightmare and it does get frustrating quickly you wont get it quickly I have been trying to do it in a corsa now for about 4 weeks and i am hating it as i am switching to auto within the next week it wont be a issue for me anymore (personal coordination problems and other issues have resulted in the change :-( I hope to take a manual test in the future)
@Timsalt3100 NO!! don't switch back to auto. When I watched this video I had no idea how to drive stick. Now I just find it boring to drive auto. Hills are pretty easy. If you know how to drive stick on somewhat of a flat surface (perfectly) the ability just comes to you. On a flat surface try this: start engine and foot on clutch and brake, switch first gear, let go of brake not clutch. Slowly let go of the clutch, notice how the car already moves without pressing the gas.
@TheTman307 too late i have made the switch going out with a auto instructor on thursday there is nothing to stop me taking a manual test in the future but for the time being i feel it is the right move for me with my learning and coordination problems it is a little more expensive. i have found a few auto models made by a few manfacturers that will suit me down to the ground after I pass like the 700cc smart fourtwo automatic its road tax is only £30 a year and it gets 65 MPG on petrol.
@Timsalt3100 This is called friction point. Now keep practicing that until you memorize that position.
On a hill: hold brake and change to first gear, let go of the clutch to that friction point while braking, quickly let go of the brake and press gas. The car will roll back a couple inches but keep pressing gas. If it only revs, let go of the clutch a little more. This just means that you haven't reached that friction point.
do you realize how many dead sea creatures crude oil drilling causes. everytime you fill up at the pump remember that many sea creatures died as a result all just like you with feelings accept they live in water.
i think the use of the accelerator is excessive and might fuck up the clutch, you dont want to see your car dip like that, your better off slightly rolling by only applying the clutch hen giving some gas. wont make a huge difference to ur clutchs life but it all counts
That gravity stuff is brilliant,it keeps our feet planted firmly on the ground, but unfortunately it affects the way the car performs,it's either your friend or foe whilst learning to drive,if you wher riding a bike uphill you'd pedal harder .or if you kicked a ball uphill but didnt kick it hard enough it would stop and roll back then the next time you'd kick it harder.
I just rely on the clutch for hill starts and add gas once i've released the handbrake, is that ok? or should i really add the revs beforehand? im a newish driver (been driving about 3 months) and do have a licence.
I LOVE these videos. There's no racism or pressure what-so-ever which I find to be quite relieving since I live in America and everyone knows that nobody is equal here.
It's funny that people look at me like I should go back to where I came from and since I'm Native-American it's just the most ironic thing I've EVER seen. =D
I just changed instructor and I've noticed that I'm driving better because he talks less and is more calm. Need to geet used to upward hill-starts though. Downhill is easy.
If I stall loads of times, my instructor just does the work in the passenger seat. Lol. You eventually get the hang of it though. =) I've had to practice on really steep hills =P
LOL!! The first time I went driving was at the roads by the mountains and their was tons of hills and I did really good, but I had to confess i was scared though!!
was really disheartening n dont know what to do now, has actually put me off driving coz obv im terrible bt he didnt tell me just kept giving me false hopes. has this happened to anyone else? and what do i do to get over it? im upset and p****d off at the same time. any replies greatly appreciated.
It will come soon. I used to stall my instructors car constantly at any junction.
Then I just got the nack for it.
Make sure youve got plenty of revs before u start on a hill (coz if u role backwards u fail on the practical test) they slowly raise ya clutch then when the back starts to sink downward release the hand break an then put ya clutch up slowly. with plenty of gas.
It will come soon. It did with me and when it did i wondered what I was making such a fuss about it.
I'm not a BSM customer, but if I were you I'd contact your instructor and ask why he hasn't turned up for the last two lessons.

Don't let it get you down though, just keep practising.

The way this guy takes off up that hill would cause chronic bunny hopping. The clutch pedal must be held stationery when the handbrake is released. I love the way he almost indicates. He used to be indecisive but after 20 years he is not sure! You don't check around then indicate. What about indicate your intention, then check to see if it is safe just before you commit?
As for going down hill, why involve the accelerator in a side street with such a steep hill.
I'm sorry, but you have no idea. You DO check then indicate. What about if you indicate as someone is coming up behind you. They think you're going to pull out in front of them and slow down. You wonder whether they are slowing down to let you out. Confusion! You indicate your intention when you have decided it is safe to pull out!
Good point about drivers slowing for you, that could be embarrassing, the rest of the video is so sad. What about the hill start, that method is totally not going to work?
actually you need to handbrake up securing the wheels, when you on a hill, find the biting point when the car is about to move let go of the handbrake and accelerate harder than normal to go up with some speed in 1st or 2nd gear.
duh, for the test its actually complusary, if you dont do it and the car rolls back allot you fail, if youre doing the test your bound to be nervous and probaly rol the car more than a metre and fail.
when i first got my learners everyone was saying how hard it was to hill start and stuff so i thought id never get it. but on my first ever go i did it perfectly... lol their so easy ... well to me anyways i can see how someone might have trouble with them

yesterday i went uphill and it was traffic then when i start it i was so scared that i might ram the car at my back so i depress the clutch then gas but it was just revving.

Driving off procedure in this video is pathetic. You do not headcheck before signal. This guy performs a headcheck and then drives off five seconds later. things can change by then. How retarded.
book your theory as soon as possible. Also listen to your instructor very carefully. Always take things slow and steady. Pay attention to everything around. As they say "slow and steady wins the race". So dont rush it just take it slow and steady
1. You start letting go of the clutch untill you notice the car is vibrating (trying to move).
2. You let go of the brake and you keep the car still-semi moving (you controll this with the clutch).
3. You accelerate to move faster. If you use only the clutch you will move but quite slowly. Its important to start slowly and then accelerate once the car has started to move without the accelerator. Once the car is moving you let go of the clutch.
Really can't stand this womans accent, they use her on every clip and she says the same thing every time.."GARY LAMB OUT BSM INSTRUCTOR OF OVER 20 YEARS" Ooooh fuck off.
how much is alot...? per hour..? cus i used to take lessons for £17 per hour...this was like a year ago..now my instructor increased the price from £17 to £19 per hour...cus of fuel prices...but since fuel prices have gone up havent they come done since then...?
I know it's a month since you asked, but If I could offer a more helpful reply, all cars, at least in America, have an emergency brake. If they're on the console, they're called handbrakes. Vans and other larger vehicles have them on the floor, usually to the left of the brake pedal. Hope that helps.
i have to admit this is a good video and all that and seem like BSM are doing well. I wouldnt choose them personally I like my driving school I'm with :D They rock!!!
i gotta tell you i can teach someone a hill start in alot less time than this video....typical bsm wasting pupils time and money! why watch stupid videos when you can get in a car and learn it for real? oh thats right because making you pay to watch videos before you get in a car is good for buslness rather than seeing what someone is capable of for real!
Anyone taking lessons with bSM should be aware that a high percentage of their instructors are trainees. BSM will not inform you of this and still charge you the full price that tends to be higher than other driving schools. If your BSM instructor has a pink badge they are not fully qualified. It is also a myth that BSM have a higher passrate than other driving schools. Even BSM do not claim this as it is not true.
I cant believe youve bin on all the bsm clips and posted this shit. im a pdi and ive never had any complaints from my pupils. ive got a family and career to think about. i dont need gobby dickheads like yourself putting my income at risk. if the pupils feel they are not getting anywhere then they can ask for another instructor. all trainees have passed their advanced driving test and had 40hrs instructor training. everyone has to start somewhere. stop badmouthing others and think wot yer sayin.
What I am stating is simply the facts, I notice you can't deny this, your use of personal abuse rather than denying these business practices says it all really. If you rand a plumbers or electricians I'm sure you'd be delighted if they told you they were just sending you an apprentice but still charging the full amount. It's true there is nithing illegal about what BSM are doing but why do they not make it know to their customers?
look, you cant blame me for being angry. i think that what you are suggesting is that the pupil is in someway being ripped off or conned. remember, that to become a pdi you need to be a least 21, been driving for 3yrs, passed an advanced theory test, an advanced driving test and had at least 40hrs instructor training. its hardly the same as an apprentice plumber. the only way you can obtain experience is by serving the time and everybody has to start at the begining.
Yes but an "SUV" as you put it has a much bigger engine with a LOT more torque.. Its a lot easier in a 4x4..
I can do hillstarts.. I was 17 last Thursday and did 60 miles in my old landrover with a bog standard 2.25 litre diesel and a shitty handbrake.. There was a car about 5 inches from the rear tow ball.. First go and sucess.. But trust me its easier in a 4x4 or SUV..
I hate hill starts at traffic lights, today I tried to use the hand brake method and stalled the car, then I rushed, as there were cars behind me, and I spun the wheels for like 10 seconds, making me look like an asshole. Damn I hate hill starts!
When I were learning to drive back in the 90s, this was my worst fear! The trick is to give the car plenty of acceleration when you set off, it is very easy not to give it enough thus stalling the car.
cus if you try to move off in 2nd gear youll defntly stall...1st gear is a moving off gear...so always go in to 1st wen uve stopped completly...wen im with my instructor and i stop at junctions.traffic lights/roudabouts etc...sometimes i 4get to go into 1st and if he doesnt remind me I STALL ....eeek....not good wen uve got so much traffic behind u beepin at u to move off...lol
Not necessarily - I've seen people move from stop in second and even third gear, but of course you're much more likely to stall (and I don't think the instructor/examiner would approve :D).
no its not a autmatic fail everyne stalls even the best drives because its somtimes the car . and ramsy66 is right dont release the hand brake or the brake till you have found the biting point
yep thats wat ive been taught cus if u realease the hand break b4 uve got to the bitin point ull rool backwards if ur on a steep hill or a slippery road..i think....
No stalling is not an automatic fail, but what u do after can be. Do not panic or rush keep calm. Apply the hanbrake and select neutral, then prepare the car to move, important do your observations and do not move off until it is SAFE.
i think its a case of bad editing...all the clips for indicating, handbrake release, clutch control etc are the same for all their videos and then spliced together, so its not the instructor's error, its the video editor's.
A clutch, it is for moving the car and changing gear's.if you don't use the clutch you ain't going nowhere and if you don't use it change gear's itont allow youunill you press the clutch,as with a automatic ithasit own clutch in the gear box so you only have to operate the brake, accelrator

Really can't stand this womans accent, they use her on every clip and she says the same thing every time.."GARY LAMB OUT BSM INSTRUCTOR OF OVER 20 YEARS" Ooooh fuck off.
StevieFan85 3 years ago
BSM cost a lot, but if you are a complete newbie then they provide a lot of valuable skills.
lonerook860 3 years ago
how much is alot...? per hour..? cus i used to take lessons for £17 per hour...this was like a year ago..now my instructor increased the price from £17 to £19 per hour...cus of fuel prices...but since fuel prices have gone up havent they come done since then...?
poop0800 3 years ago
It is £27 per hour where I learnt to drive. Not really worth it if you have a good driver with you and a car you can use yourself.

what if I don't have a handbrake?

I know it's a month since you asked, but If I could offer a more helpful reply, all cars, at least in America, have an emergency brake. If they're on the console, they're called handbrakes. Vans and other larger vehicles have them on the floor, usually to the left of the brake pedal. Hope that helps.
IrisMG 2 years ago
use a brick behind the rear wheel. if you don't have handbrake.

i have to admit this is a good video and all that and seem like BSM are doing well. I wouldnt choose them personally I like my driving school I'm with :D They rock!!!

what's the reason for not being allowed to use the handbrake?
scuderia515 3 years ago 2
i gotta tell you i can teach someone a hill start in alot less time than this video....typical bsm wasting pupils time and money! why watch stupid videos when you can get in a car and learn it for real? oh thats right because making you pay to watch videos before you get in a car is good for buslness rather than seeing what someone is capable of for real!
B S M.......Bad, shocking, moneymaking!
yeknom79 3 years ago
Anyone taking lessons with bSM should be aware that a high percentage of their instructors are trainees. BSM will not inform you of this and still charge you the full price that tends to be higher than other driving schools. If your BSM instructor has a pink badge they are not fully qualified. It is also a myth that BSM have a higher passrate than other driving schools. Even BSM do not claim this as it is not true.
JohnAGood 3 years ago
I cant believe youve bin on all the bsm clips and posted this shit. im a pdi and ive never had any complaints from my pupils. ive got a family and career to think about. i dont need gobby dickheads like yourself putting my income at risk. if the pupils feel they are not getting anywhere then they can ask for another instructor. all trainees have passed their advanced driving test and had 40hrs instructor training. everyone has to start somewhere. stop badmouthing others and think wot yer sayin.
tomlandrymiddleschoo 3 years ago
What I am stating is simply the facts, I notice you can't deny this, your use of personal abuse rather than denying these business practices says it all really. If you rand a plumbers or electricians I'm sure you'd be delighted if they told you they were just sending you an apprentice but still charging the full amount. It's true there is nithing illegal about what BSM are doing but why do they not make it know to their customers?
JohnAGood 3 years ago
look, you cant blame me for being angry. i think that what you are suggesting is that the pupil is in someway being ripped off or conned. remember, that to become a pdi you need to be a least 21, been driving for 3yrs, passed an advanced theory test, an advanced driving test and had at least 40hrs instructor training. its hardly the same as an apprentice plumber. the only way you can obtain experience is by serving the time and everybody has to start at the begining.

hill starts are ez mode!
fran20055 3 years ago
Yes but an "SUV" as you put it has a much bigger engine with a LOT more torque.. Its a lot easier in a 4x4..
I can do hillstarts.. I was 17 last Thursday and did 60 miles in my old landrover with a bog standard 2.25 litre diesel and a shitty handbrake.. There was a car about 5 inches from the rear tow ball.. First go and sucess.. But trust me its easier in a 4x4 or SUV..
unsworth109 3 years ago
you will need to do a hill start when u park on a hill... thats the only reason u do them...
docstafa 3 years ago
I hate hill starts at traffic lights, today I tried to use the hand brake method and stalled the car, then I rushed, as there were cars behind me, and I spun the wheels for like 10 seconds, making me look like an asshole. Damn I hate hill starts!

haha i do that a lot... so glad i'm not the only one!

you'll wear the clutch out if you don't use the hand break

When I were learning to drive back in the 90s, this was my worst fear! The trick is to give the car plenty of acceleration when you set off, it is very easy not to give it enough thus stalling the car.
DavidTL 3 years ago 5
Hey I dont understand. You're meaning to say that sometimes if the hill is too slopy, we can just shift to 2nd gear from neutral and start moving?
holyboy27 3 years ago
yeh i did this with my instructor on a hill going down obviously lol. It was really kool haha!
IceBkk 3 years ago
cus if you try to move off in 2nd gear youll defntly stall...1st gear is a moving off gear...so always go in to 1st wen uve stopped completly...wen im with my instructor and i stop at junctions.traffic lights/roudabouts etc...sometimes i 4get to go into 1st and if he doesnt remind me I STALL ....eeek....not good wen uve got so much traffic behind u beepin at u to move off...lol
poop0800 3 years ago
Not necessarily - I've seen people move from stop in second and even third gear, but of course you're much more likely to stall (and I don't think the instructor/examiner would approve :D).

I didnt learn the handbrake thing, my teacher told me to use clutch and brake only, works as well :)
bf2modsde 3 years ago
and for this 20 years he didn't learn that there's no need to push the button on handbrake when u want to apply it...
tylnywachacz 3 years ago
I think it's just his habit? I also do that, hate to hear the sound created by the button when pulling the handbrake
ErosJC 3 years ago
yes there is, if you dont it causes ware and tare on the locking mechanism
chieftaster 3 years ago
yeah, you're not supposed to put up the handbrake on the ratchet, it damages it! its like dry steering, we can all do it but we shouldn't!
carolineolley 3 years ago 2
lol tylnywachacz is funny + right :D u dont need to push the button to apply the brake
JohnF30Music 3 years ago
no its not a autmatic fail everyne stalls even the best drives because its somtimes the car . and ramsy66 is right dont release the hand brake or the brake till you have found the biting point
rhys21kipling 4 years ago
automatic gearbox has a cluth, rhere's just no 3rd pedal
tylnywachacz 3 years ago
yep thats wat ive been taught cus if u realease the hand break b4 uve got to the bitin point ull rool backwards if ur on a steep hill or a slippery road..i think....
poop0800 3 years ago
can i ask if you stall is that an automatic fail?!
kutely 4 years ago
No stalling is not an automatic fail, but what u do after can be. Do not panic or rush keep calm. Apply the hanbrake and select neutral, then prepare the car to move, important do your observations and do not move off until it is SAFE.
wales4everok 3 years ago
You guys have no idea. Drop the handbrake and then let the clutch out. You will roll back. WRONG
alanquarendon 4 years ago
but isnt it better to preapare your car for moving off before uve realeased the hand break...?
poop0800 3 years ago
Watch the video. He drops the handbrake, then he finds friction point. Basic error. Laughable.
alanquarendon 3 years ago
i think its a case of bad editing...all the clips for indicating, handbrake release, clutch control etc are the same for all their videos and then spliced together, so its not the instructor's error, its the video editor's.
adderseal 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Thanks for that. I hope it is bad editing. it is so pathetic to watch.
alanquarendon 2 years ago
Whats a clutch?
SirealKiller 4 years ago
A clutch, it is for moving the car and changing gear's.if you don't use the clutch you ain't going nowhere and if you don't use it change gear's itont allow youunill you press the clutch,as with a automatic ithasit own clutch in the gear box so you only have to operate the brake, accelrator
