A very intriguing bawu (which from an organological perspective it definitely is, no matter what others in these comments have tried to assert). How does it compare in tone quality with a regular bawu, as the sides of a gourd are so much thinner?
Well, it's ugly as all hell, and a professional wouldn't get caught dead with it, unless of course, their gimick is playing ugly instruments. If that's the case, I don't think professional quite suits them.
Though your name is modest and undeniably well suited, I find your comments a bit sweeping Fingergod. My first instrument consisted of little more than a piece of wood from the back yard and a piece of scraggy old string - and I am still playing that instrument 18 years later on stages all over the world. Your suggestions that a 'proffesional' would "not be caught dead" playing an ugly instrument are offensive and unsubstantiated. I will forgive you on this occassion... maybe you are tired?
They come from two seperate minority groups, and once integrated into main stream, the Instruments were perfected and previous models thus become obsolete.
Regardless of how they sound, The Instrument is more often than not defined by it's construction.
A SanXian ans Syamisen sound the same, but are they the same? No.
The Xiao and Shakuhatchi sound the same, but are they the same? No.
Not just two minority groups play these instruments. And usually these instruments co-exist.
Of course, the bawu and gourd are two distinct instruments. That's why when it is made with a gourd and played horizontally it is still called a bawu, right?

the gourd on bawu does not bring much effectiveness. i guess it is just for decorative purpose.

Modern, Professional, QUALITY Bawu Do not have gourds hanging from them.
Mine certainly doesn't.
21FingerGod 2 years ago
Usually bawu is made with bamboo.
But this one is made with African-crane gourd, which is having a very long hollow stem, and it sounds very mellow.
This bawu is made by professional bawu & hulusi maker in China. It is not a toy nor a tourist souvenir, it is a quality instrument.

I don't mind you think it's ugly.
Every single person can have different perspectives and attitudes to things.
You don't have to fall in love with it.
I posted this vid 'cause I want to share this rare instrument with others.

What's more, the hulusi and the bawu share the same sounding principles. So it's no big surprise to see a bawu with a gourd. :-)

Du Xian Qin, and Dan bau? Not the same.
Do you see the point I'm making?

I need to clarify:
Not just two minority groups play these instruments. And usually these instruments co-exist.
Of course, the bawu and gourd are two distinct instruments. That's why when it is made with a gourd and played horizontally it is still called a bawu, right?

The Craftsman has created some sort of magical bawu-hulusi crossbread.
We'll leave it at that.

WHAT
In the name of GOD
IS THAT THING HANGING OF FHIS BAWU?!
That shouldn't be there...
21FingerGod 2 years ago
You mean the rugged surface of the gourd? THAT IS PART OF THE PLANT.
ALL THE THINGS HANGED ON THE WALL ARE GOURD (PLANT).
This kind of African crane gourd is rugged like this when it is dried.
soundofnature01 2 years ago
Then This is an African Crane Gourd flute.
The Sound my be similar, but it's certainly not a Bawu.
If you were aiming for Hulusi, but designed it wrong, I can understand, But Bawu do not have Gourds.
21FingerGod 2 years ago
This is certainly NOT a hulusi. This is played horizontally. There is another African gourd one made vertically, which I don't have a vid.
