James Hunt was such a douchebag. Punching marshalls and blaming other drivers for his mistakes. Like the way he blamed Riccardo Patrese for the crash at Monza 1978 when it was Hunt's car that actually started the crash.
He'd probaby have been sued if it happened today. You got to make allowance though. The adrenaline would have been pumping from the shunt, and that marshall couldn't keep from touching him.

I was there....Turn Three. It was a hard hit ; the wall is close to the circuit there. We all screamed at him not to cross as we could see cars streaming down the hill into Two. Of course he couldn't hear the spectators! The odd thing is that there was nothing on the other side to cross over to and no easy access to the pits from that part of the infield...he was clearly dazed. Note that he didn't retrieve his shoe from the cockpit!

Good on this is the TV documentary 'The Real James Hunt'.

jackiejayetv, I am a Flag Marshal here in Australia (Corner Worker in the US) and I believe that because James was stunned from his accident, the Marshal had to get him off the track before he got hit.
Nowadays, the driver has to get themselves off the track and the marshals have to get permission (huh!) to enter the racing surface to get driver if they are in the same state that James was in..

Hunt was not stunned, was just upset and let steam off. The marshal kept pushing and pulling him beyond reason, specially considering he was dealing with someone with a heartbeat of 140+ and adrenaline at maximum levels. I would have punched him myself. Hunt was hardly placing himself in danger, as he clearly staying on the grass by the car

Marshals need to get the drivers off the track and out of harms way. They cant risk that a dazed and confused driver will unwittingly walk into the path of traffic and kill themselves...but the drivers sure hate it..as would I.
