Careful description of this exercise, with cautions. I believe, like many with scoliosis that correction can be achieved and that it will probably require the half hour twice a day format of doctor specified exercises/stretches prescribed for me, but with additional back awareness during the day as well.
@DeathForSk8 If you got a hump on the left side of your back swing your legs to the left. If it's like a C then you wouldn't wanna swing the side it's curving to. Swing to the opposite side.
just a question, if your lumbar hump is to the left like the guy in the video, which leg should you stride forward with when doing leg sqauts, to derotate and lessen the lumbar hump? I feel it is not good to do leg squats with dumbells symmetrically when you have lumbar scoliosis, so i do mine with one leg slightly striding forward more than the other, but i dunno which one.
I was just diagnosed with lumbar scoliosis at age 32. I am really scared it could get worse. I found it because I injured my back while lifting a 3-person seadoo. My doctor just gave me vicodin and sent me on my way, so I decided to see a chiropractor. He took xrays and found my scoliosis. His hypothesis is that I got injured because my spine was out of alignment. He is going to do some adjustments this week and next week, and he said just that alone will probably fix me. Praying.
@DarthAlan If you just got diagnosed at age 32 its obviously not severe scoliosis otherwise it would be discovered sooner. Stop complaining, your fine.
@MargieMama Hahaa I was just thinking the same thing. This is obviously not for advanced scoliosis such as I have. Just looking at this makes me cringe. I was told I was unable to have surgery and as an adult besides pt and meds/injections, that's about all I have as options. I have severe pain and I believe it has made it difficult for me to breathe. I go to the pulmonologist soon. This is a horrible problem that people just laugh off like, oh it's not painful. I am like "try being me".
@geekgrl74 Yep, same here. Even my husband seems to think it's not that bad. I can't breathe either. My ribs are twisted into my right lung and compressing it. I can barely walk anymore. I hate it. I hate how it looks. I have four young sons, four adult kids and three grandchildren. I had kids young so I could enjoy being a 43 year old grandma..so much for that! People have NO IDEA how it is to have your entire core compromised.
@geekgrl74 Really? They wont offer minimal invasive surgery to fix it? I would think it would be better to operate on a fully grown adult than someone who is still growing. Im sorry you have have to deal with that. Im giving my fiance back messages every night to work out her knots that form.
@bluedavenger minimally invasive surgery for severe scoliosis would be great but, it just doesn't exist. :( As an adult, your bones are not as pliable and harder to manipulate and your body doesn't heal as easily. Plus I have degeneration at L4 so, it wouldn't be anything pleasant for me. I wish I had someone as nice as you to rub my back and offer me support. Keep doing what you're doing. There is still hope out there for single women like me that maybe "real" men still exist.
@geekgrl74 Margie, thanks for the support. I wish there were better answers for us. Maybe some day they will come up with easier options and doctors as well as others will come to realize just how debilitating this can become and realize we truly are in pain.
i do the hanging for 1 minute 3 times each day and about 10 other exercises in my therapy gym. push up back stretches, and other really tough ones.i dont think i've done anything so tough in my life but the pain in my back is fading. the doc said you gotta back your spine flexible and than work on muscles in your back to take advantage of the spine posture. the exercises are extremely tough my arms feel numb and my palms are scratched up from the metal grip but hey you gotta do what you gotta do
This exercise is a part of the Schroth Method, an exercise program created by a scoliotic woman who figured out how to reduce her curvature on her own. I have REDUCED my curvature with the Schroth Method, versus surgery which only promises that it MAY be able to SLOW the progression of a curvature. I am currently working on Schroth exercises with a DPT with no prior knowledge of the method and both of us are very impressed with my progress.
@Kepachodude Surgery also opens you to risks like infection and spinal cord damage. Exercises may be uncomfortable, but they won't kill you or make you a paraplegic. I highly recommend the Schroth book, which is available on Amazon for $50. If you can't apply the book on your own (I couldn't, it's written for physical therapists!), search out an open-minded orthopedist, physical therapist, doctor of chiropractic, doctor of osteopathy, Rolfer, or other professional bodyworker to help you.
why should I swing towards the curve? isn't it I should swing it against? and I was quite confused..how should I determine the curve? my hump is on the right side
@2NE1FANATICisTAMGAHO My guess is this. When you are exercising you use the muscles of the side you want to strengthen, either right arm or left leg; should be the same with the back. When you move toward the curve you are exercising the muscle on that side of the body, making them more resistant to curvature of the spine keeping it in place. That's my understanding and i could be wrong.
@essentialyoga Exactly. I am 43 years old and can barely walk now because of the scoliosis. I am a "poor surgical candidate" due to kidney and vascular disease. I feel hopeless at this point. I can't even lift things anymore, let alone hold my own body weight!
@MargieMama Do you know if you are near an Iyengar Yoga studio? If not, let me know what town you are in and I can see if I can find a qualified teacher who works with individuals who have scoliosis.
You can email me directly at essentialyoga at comcast. net
Im trying these exercises but i dont have access to a bar high enough. I am able to hang from a bar but i have to bend my legs a bit. Also, do anyone know if this is reversible after a certain age? or you'll be fine if your able to keep stretching.
Another question is how long will this time? I have a slight curve going to the right. near my shoulder. Because of that i have developed a slight hump on my right shoulder back area :( so im trying to fix it.
I was diagnosed with MS back in 1983.Recently I came across ccsviclinic.ca. They are screening in Fargo, ND. Called (404)461-9560 and spoke to Nurse Lisa. Their Liberation Package includes pre-op video consultation with their doctors, flight costs, visas, accommodation within their hospital premises. The treatment includes stent, medications, reports & post-op followup for next 6 mths. Email:apply@ccsviclinic.ca. Getting liberated mid-October. Thankful to CCSVI Clinic for making this happen!
Hi, i hav a question...i hav scoliosis too & i found this magnetic posture corrector which has 12 embedded magnets aligned down the center spine & across the lumbar region to improve blood circulation & reduce muscle & back pains & of course to correct posture....im just curious if this will work for scoliotic patients too...does anyone here tried this product?& is it safe?
hey spineharmony ! ! is this stretch bad for your shoulders thought? could this stretch your tendons and ligaments? please get back at me because i have scoliosis
I got rid of my Scoliosis at 38 without surgery using a Theraflex Machine.
Search mjYU_fWhjU4 in the You Tube search box to see me having a treatment session. My back used to disappear behind my shoulder blade and a few sessions on this and now it’s visible along the whole back. Before and after photos on my Facebook Group : Scoliosis Cures and Pain Relief. Have a look, get your therapist to have a look and get them to get one, then keep it straight with theses excercises
Check out Clear Institute. My daughter has scoliosis too and we avoided braces and spine surgery. We chose to go and use Clear Institute. Have you seen the youtube of the spine surgery?
I have scoliosis, and I don't find it a problem. I was just curious about it.

If I did this, every bone in my back would snap! I really don't think my bones would hold up to this one. Maybe with my feet still on the ground.
