the cell membrane lets the water in because it has less water level in the egg than in the water so the water goes in. the other egg, with corn syrup will let the eggs water go out into the corn syruop because the corn syrup has less water in it than the egg

i guess too that the corn syrop will deflate the egg due to the sugar or maybe even due to the starch. And water will increase the volume of the other egg.

i would have thought that the circumferance would be dictated to some extent by the jar you put them in. If the egg expands alot you wont be able to get it out easily so neither egg should expand by more than an inch.
