Here's the simplest explanation to avoid traveling: once a player with the ball jumps into the air, he must do one of two things; either shoot it or pass it. Whether he leaves the floor on two legs to shoot a jump shot or one leg to make a layup he has to get rid of the ball. He can't jump in the air to get through two defenders come back to the floor with the ball still in his possession and jump in the air again to shoot it. LbJ took 2 steps to split the defense and a 3rd to shoot the shot.

If you pick up your dribble and take a step then that foot cannot touch the ground again until after you've jumped, so you cannot hopstep as that involves the same foot touching the ground again before you've jumped.
