I know what you mean, I'm going to the 2009 Long Beach grand prix and it will be wierd seeing and hearing IRL cars there instead of Cart/Champ Cars. I'll miss the sound of those V-8 turbo's.
The Honda V8 sounded good for 2009 at Long Beach but they don't hold a candle to the sound of the Cosworth V-8 turbo as you can hear from this video clip. I was talking to an Indy lights mechanic at the Long Beach grand prix and he said it's rumored that for 2010 or 2011, IRL might put turbo's back in for the road/street courses. Hopefully, the IRL would also bring "power to pass" back which always made things a little more exciting. But, this is just a rumor of course and wishful thinking. :)
They were testing the noise level because there is a 911 call center right on the corner. It passed the noise test but the sponsorship fell through so there was no race. :(
its not the rpm, but the lack of a turbo. the 19k makes it sound good unlike the IRL where it has no turbo and rev's about as high as a Mazda RX-8. hahha.
Love those Champ Cars I used to follow this series since
1984. I still like the Champ Cars over the IRL machines a much better sound and look. But now I follow NASCAR fulltime know I just lost interest. But maybe CART and IRL can reach an agreement one day and have the glory days back again.
Well, two 750-horsepower machines and one 300-horsepower machine... But now I know why Team Australia spent most of the standing-start practice at Laguna Seca this weekend simply practicing pitstops. They got all their standing-start practice done there in Phoenix!
sherry sherif rpaio said he couldn't heer da immigrants crossing border, w/ da IndyCars in phx!

The Cossies sounded nice, but that old Honda lump from CART in the 90's sounded even better. 900+ HP of Turbocharged (real) Indycar bliss

What race was this for?

Race was supposed to be in Phoenix ,AZ 2007 but the race fell through because there wasn't enough sponsorship.

Can someone explain to me what is a decibel test please? :)

great sound!!

I agree, I think the Cosworth turbo V-8's sound so much better than the Honda normally aspirated V-8's in the current Indy series.

F1 is much louder, but that's partly because of the 19,000rpm!
hedleythorne 3 years ago
Who cares if it's louder, the quality of the sound is what matters, and the V8 turbocharged Champcar has better sound quality.

700 hp actually. 750hp is very briefly with power-to-pass
Joe22300 4 years ago
750 all the time at most tracks. 800 with P2P.
