Pretty tough in the sense that it takes a long time. I import the audio I want to synch to into a program called monkeyjam, it converts the audio into frames and if you scroll along you can hear the different sounds. The next step would be marking down what letters you can hear. Then when you animate you just need to make sure you put the right mouth on when you capture the image.

It didn't cost much to produce, the materials themselves add up but not to a great deal. Proffesionaly these things cost thousands to produce but thats mostly because of the time it takes to prepare and then animate one frame at a time. This was my final college project so I had to animate something anyway regardless of what it was or who the characters were.. I just chose to do a character animation and aslong as it was something aligned in some way with 'alternative' media, I was happy :)
