My family was originally from Hull. My grandfather was one of the first motorcycle cops there and my father lived there until after WW2. then moved to NJ. I remember visiting my Aunt there in the summers in the late 60's. We would always go to Paragon Park. Larry Stone would always give me a giant roll of tickets so I could spend all day on the rides! I loved the coaster. My great grandfather had a lot to do with the building of it. He also started a hardware store in Hingham. Walsh & Packard.
why did they have to tear it down? our kids would have loved this place!! or am i stuck in the fifties?? after reading the comments, it seems that all of us would love to go back to that wonderful place in our lives........what a loss....
Every couple of weeks I come on YouTube and watch this video again. I really miss this place. Me, my sister, my mom and dad and my grandparents (mom's parents) came here at least 5 or 6 times each summer going back as far as I remember. The last time we were all there together was 1972. We left Eastern MA for Connecticut the following year. My sister told me she saw this video after I sent her a link to it and cried like a baby. Thanks so much for posting this gem.
Oh the memories!!!!!!! Thank you for this video! Remember the Round Up? Gravity held you in, and a little chain. Those were the best days of my life :-)
I grew up in Waltham until I was 8 and then Newton. My family and I used to go to Nantasket Beach several times during each summer! I remember it well!! Also--Revere Beach!!! The rides, the carney, the food, the beach!!!
Some friends' families would rent homes (or even owned them) during the summer in Nantasket; wish our family did--we kids attended day and/or overnight camp instead!!
OK, thanks pal. I just saw these pictures and began to reminisce about all the times my family spent there. You made me cry (and that isn't easy to do). I'm originally from Brockton MA and spent a lot of time at Nantasket in the '60s and early '70s. Not much left on the Strip; there's a blues club and a few shops and fast food places. I remember the Hojo's at the end of the Strip and getting ice cream just before we left the park. I'm going to send my sister a link to this. This rocks!
omg i cried like a baby watching this...Had my first kiss here, ate TONS of fried clams....wow those days where great....wish my kids could have loved Paragon like i did.
Oh so many fun Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons walking around Paragon Park and riding the rides. Too bad our kids do not have those happy memories. Joseph's is still going strong and serving delicious food especiall those gigantic pieces of fried dough. Wish I had one now.
This took me back to Hull Mass...Nantasket Beach at 9am, staying all day on a Saturday, Sams at night watching a good band and heading back home to N.Quincy at 2am.
Mom saying "where you been" when you fall through the door.
And all one can say is "Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed"!!! LOL
I don't know who you are, but friend, thanks for the memories!
@RoyOrbisonSinger I remember: Riding the coaster only once cause it felt like I was being pulled out of my seat and it scared me to death. Coming up to the sharp curve in Hingam by the harbor and smelling fried clams from The Cove restaurant. Everytime my girlfriend and I would return from a N.H. trip late at night my dog who was sleeping the whole way with her head on my knee, would wake up as soon as we passed The Showboat cause she would smell the bay and know that she was home.
thats awesome great memories i grew up in quincy but my friends and i would take the 13 mile bicycle trip down to paragon park on saturdays and we would spend the day there. I live in hull now and i have very fond memories of paragon park.
Even thought the COASTER still runs in Maryland, the reprofiling took alot away. Something about the beach and rollercoasters! It was a great place and missed!!
My first job was at Lahage's Salt Water Taffy. Mr. L was the best boss I ever had! the feeling I got when sitting up and being able to work the taffy wrapping machine and it would roll down the chute and people would just stand and stare for hours...

It is wild to be sitting in Tennessee and watch this video---makes me want to go home. Why do big wigs let places like this, that bring so many memories, let them go. Sad----I loved Nantasket/Paragon Park
Great photos, though I think the one of the roller-coaster cars was not from Paragon Park... there were no trees anywhere around the coaster, as I recall, though I do recall the "Comet" on the front of the cars (my first and still favorite coaster). If you remember the Wild Mouse, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Wild Mouse at The Oaks Park in Portland, OR; unfortunately, that wonderful, rickety ride has been replaced with one of those new, steel-tracked coasters.... not nearly the appeal.
I am 31 and visited the park when I was a very small child, so my firsthand memories are quite dim and limited. I do remember the Bermuda Triangle, Kooky Kastle, the Teacups, the car ride (Indy 500??) and a small train ride. My parents have lots of memories of the place and lots of stories. Last time I saw Nantasket was about 8 years ago and I remember when I was about 13 trying to find 'remnants" of the park, where the condos are now. Would love to take my daughter there but sadly, can't.
This place was my childhood. I miss it so bad. Many times, we didn't have the money to get into the park (which was not that much by 6 flags standards), so we just enjoyed the beach. I'm almost 40, this memory, makes me cry (happy cry), I miss Paragon Park.
WOW i 33 and i remember going to Paragon Park. I was born and raised in Hyde Park. I was actually at the beach the other day and it does bring back great memories!!
WoW !! What an Awesome Video. I grew up in Hull 60's-70's and Paragon Park is one of my most treasured memories. Worked at Fascination for awhile too. :-) Anyone else here that went to the Broad Cove or The Surf in the 70's ? If so please respond, I want to tell you about a Reunion Dance coming up in November 2008. I'm trying to round up the old crowd.
I graduated in '71, also, but from Newton (North); but I spent every summer in Hull (and my mother still does... this is her 73rd year (perhaps 77th... she just turned 90) there, I think? Back when the population actually got 5-10 times bigger in the summer and Hull was a sleepy wintertime town... no more.
For those of us whose parents couldn't afford to take us to Disney, it sure was as wonderful as we could only imagine Disney to be and it was what we had to settle for. God forbid you should leave anything for not-so-well-to-do kids to enjoy anymore, especially when you can tear it down and build g-damned condos! Sad and sickening!
Thank you for posting this! Brings back such wonderful memories. Spent alot of time at Paragon Park as a kid. I can still remember the smell of Kooky Castle - lol! That and the Round Up were my favorite rides. ^_^
OMG that was the best gift anyone could give me! I'll always remember driving over the hill, and seeing the Roller Coaster, and you would just go crazy screaming in the car! Skee ball was the best!!!
wow , what a memory , went there as a kid with my family, as a teenager , early 20's .now on my motorcycle on nice sunny warm sunday mornings to get a coffee ,relax reminess ,sure miss the rollercoaster 13 times one afternoon ah yes former girlfriend didn't care for the coaster she enjoyed the round up
@alicerockerboy OMG...yeah, the kooky Castle......remember at the end of the ride your car bats against thin metal glowing gravestones on each side....then you burst into daylight outside the ride
what a trip to see that clip..i lived 30 miles from Hull, my parents would take me there all the time as a kid...so much fun..when i was a teenager me and a friend even rode our bikes 30 miles to spend the day there...i have since taken my kids there to the only thing standing the carousel and the arcades...ahh the good ole days
Thank you. A friend sent me the link to this vid. I'm from Quincy (Germantown) and I'm now living in India. It was so cool to see the Park again. I loved this place and the beach. I lived in Hull in 80 & 81 and it was suggested I move by "the boys in blue" , too many parties on Bay St.! Young and stupid was way more fun than old and stupid! Thanks again I really needed some "home"
what a wonderful surprise on this daylight saving time Sunday morning. I am the " Woofer or the Ooper depending on how close we were. Eddie Wolfe's the name Simco's by the bridge was my game, and those weekends at Kenberma St. I can just see Goldie meandering about the crowd.Fried clams mmmmmmmmm.
OMG I can't believe this video. Would you think less of me if I told you watching it made tears (happy ones) come to my eyes?! I spent every weekend for years at Paragon. Always wished I could have worked there but it closed before I got a chance. Such memories...congo cruise, kiddie land, Sam the tankard Man, the wild mouse and the crown jewel the Giant Roller coaster. I am so happy that a friend sent me this link. I'm forwarding to all the Paragon Park groupies I know. ~Carrie
Loved this video. It was like a trip to Disney World when my parents would take us to Paragon Park 1 day each summer. Today I live exactly where the Wild Mouse used to be and love living here in Hull
I worked at Paragon Park for Myron Clayman in the games at the front of the park for a couple of summers in 1972. The Cat Game (3 down takes choice of the stand), Can Can, and One in Wins. Who can can forget the Kohlers Custard Store, Fascination, and the Eudemon Lounge and the smell of fried ispwich clams (which i never ate). How about dollar day at Paragon Park which became bargain day at $1.50. Wow does anyone remember stopping the Congo Cruise and having multiple boats behind you- wow
Remember stopping those boats...my cousin would do it and I would flip out! Nothing like the smell of the congo cruise water!! Ew makes my stomach turn today. But a smell I would give anything to smell again. I feel like I took a ride in the way-back machine today!
Lots of good memories. Good job. I created a 3D animated ride loosely based on the "Kooky Kastle" for anyone who remembers that ride. I'm not someone who runs around YouTube redirecting people, but it might bring back some cool memories...there's a bit of the "Congo Cruise" thrown in there too!
I remember both Paragon Park and Revere Beach Rides. I went to Revere Beach every Sunday with my dad to ride the carousel. Two years ago I got to ride it again the carousel now lives in Ohio at Cedar Point. Paragon Park's Comet was my very first roller coaster. I had bruises on my arms for a week from wrapping them up and around the crossbar. I was also where we went the morning after Junior Prom 1983. The kids today dont know what they are missing.
Paragon park was the greatest place to go in the summer when we were kids. From toddler to teen...I even had my first date at paragon! What a lot of memories this brings back...now it is just another bunch of beach front condos....what a shame!
Oh yes!! Abbadessa's was SOOOO good! I havn't been down to that area in a long time so I have no idea if ANY of the old parts are left. The last trip I made at least the arcade was still there, is it still?
One of my first jobs was working at Paragon Park the summer of 1972. Worked the Congo Cruise among other rides, 15 years old working 10-12 hours a day. Same music playing over, and over and over...I still cringe when I hear "It's So Nice To Be With You"...Yiikes. A right of passage was going to Al's Spaghetti House, nothing beat seeing Scotty "Elvis" Anderson and his band at Al's, or having fried clams before having to be home for curfew.
Sorry been away a bit, I used to remember coming home from visiting relatives in Worcester, and my trigger for knowing we were almost home was the Ole mississippi water wheel boat that was grounded, before entering the turn that goes past Paragon Park. Hey
InspireImages, I can't tell you her last name but I can tell you I wish I kept all the stuff she would bring home. I went to Damon school at the time. I also miss the aquarium, I think I need a trip back to see my old homestead.
I remember going into Boston to take the boat to Nantasket (Paragon Park) in the fifties and sixties. I really loved those times and guess I thought things could remain the same forever. Thanks for the memories! Judy
growing upin Hull, Paragon will always be a special place. None of u other South Shore bitches had what we had. Hull is a mix of Dorcher hoodlum, plus Brockton pride, seasoned with Southie toughness and values. If you were from Hull, you were told you had 2 things if nothing else. Heart and Balls. maybe those were instilled from having rode the Round Up so many times as a kid....
i took my kids to paragon park last labor day weekend and they had a ball. the smell of the clam cakes and the clams were awesome. kids were afraid to go n the coaster because it was made of wood. looking forward to going again next summer.
To takuhe156 ~ What are you SMOKING ? Paragon Park was Awesome , and if you were there this past summer with your kids I want some of whatever your on. Lots of it ! LOL
Nice video, but as I grew up I watched Paragon Park go right down hill - things are b=never as good as we remeeber then - especially from the days of our youth let's drink a cup of kindness dear for auld lang syne
people should list the rides they remember. the kooky castle. the indy 500 race. the mini coaster. the train. the teacups. the mighty mouse coaster. the bermuda triangle boat ride, aka the congo cruise. the tilta-whirl, bumpercars, .........?
As close to an idylic experience as there could ever be. Spending summers in Nantasket and hearing such music classics for the first time ... enough there to last a lifetime. Great job indeed!
I remember taking the boat from Boston's waterfront to Nantasket with my folks. After swimming at the beach, we would go to Joe & Nemo's for fried clams. Then, off to Paragon. Another spot we went to was Revere Beach amusement park, which closed around 1970. As a teenager, I went there during the final summer the park was open to say I rode "The Cyclone"...Well I almost had a heart attack. My mother told me I had rocks in my head for riding that "monster" in Revere!
Nothing was ever more exciting than being taken down to the park and hitting the rotary in Hingham, knowing we were that much closer to the park. Then finally making the final turn by the cliffs and seeing the big coaster standing in the sky against the backdrop of the open water.
Great job! I have many fond memories of ParaGOn Park! Oh my goodness! Where to start. The giant roller coaster was my first ever roller coaster. My older sister Diane forced me on - I was 10 years old and lied about my age. I screamed the whole way down and then ran back in line to do it again. There was something magical about playing Put-Put golf under the roller coaster and having the cars roaring overhead....
While Six Flags America is a relatively modern park, The Wild One coaster dates back to 1917. It originally circled along one side of Paragon Park in Hull, MA, south of Boston, where it was known simply as the Giant Coaster. When the venerable seaside park closed (lamentably, along with so many other vintage amusement parks) in 1985, the Maryland park saved it from the wrecking ball.
She operated different rides and also worked in the midway games. I remember she would always come home with different prizes and even some of the hoops you would toss, lol. Oh yeah and lots of extra tickets. Thanks again Paragon!!!
got my first blow job at the beach at night time yum yum good and she did not waste my love juice yum yum

To SnuggyinFL: I grew up in Hull. I remember the Surf. What type of reunion are you planning?
HullGirl57 3 years ago
i grew up in hull - graduated in 68- worked at Paragon for a summer at the cotton candy machine- who are you?
laikigirl 3 years ago
Don't believe we know each other. Graduated in 71 . Who are you ? :-)
SNUGGYinFL 3 years ago
I graduated in '71, also, but from Newton (North); but I spent every summer in Hull (and my mother still does... this is her 73rd year (perhaps 77th... she just turned 90) there, I think? Back when the population actually got 5-10 times bigger in the summer and Hull was a sleepy wintertime town... no more.
tallgene 3 years ago
Lived at Paragon Park all summer. I also graduated Hull high class of '68. Boy does this bring back memories.
leenie1029 3 years ago
Class of '68 here. Went to the Surf every weekend. Hung out why guys from Dorchester. I'd love to know about the reunion.

I rode the rollercoaster one night al long time ago very very drunk.

This is awesome! Thank you for that injection of nostalgia!

Thank you for posting this! Brings back such wonderful memories. Spent alot of time at Paragon Park as a kid. I can still remember the smell of Kooky Castle - lol! That and the Round Up were my favorite rides. ^_^

alicerockerboy 3 years ago 8
@alicerockerboy OMG...yeah, the kooky Castle......remember at the end of the ride your car bats against thin metal glowing gravestones on each side....then you burst into daylight outside the ride

Today I live exactly where the Wild Mouse used to be and love living here in Hull
billmac1007 3 years ago 2
I worked at Paragon Park for Myron Clayman in the games at the front of the park for a couple of summers in 1972. The Cat Game (3 down takes choice of the stand), Can Can, and One in Wins. Who can can forget the Kohlers Custard Store, Fascination, and the Eudemon Lounge and the smell of fried ispwich clams (which i never ate). How about dollar day at Paragon Park which became bargain day at $1.50. Wow does anyone remember stopping the Congo Cruise and having multiple boats behind you- wow
armykid71392 3 years ago 2
Remember stopping those boats...my cousin would do it and I would flip out! Nothing like the smell of the congo cruise water!! Ew makes my stomach turn today. But a smell I would give anything to smell again. I feel like I took a ride in the way-back machine today!
beachy68 3 years ago 3
Lots of good memories. Good job. I created a 3D animated ride loosely based on the "Kooky Kastle" for anyone who remembers that ride. I'm not someone who runs around YouTube redirecting people, but it might bring back some cool memories...there's a bit of the "Congo Cruise" thrown in there too!
paulcarty 3 years ago
Ah, good times!!!
I love your work, you are a genius.

The kids today dont know what they are missing.
lioness4466 3 years ago
Paragon park was the greatest place to go in the summer when we were kids. From toddler to teen...I even had my first date at paragon! What a lot of memories this brings back...now it is just another bunch of beach front condos....what a shame!

Anyone remember the tasty fare at Abbadessa's Pizza up the street from Paragon Park?
mrm28813 3 years ago 2
Oh yes!! Abbadessa's was SOOOO good! I havn't been down to that area in a long time so I have no idea if ANY of the old parts are left. The last trip I made at least the arcade was still there, is it still?
jandkds 3 years ago
One of my first jobs was working at Paragon Park the summer of 1972. Worked the Congo Cruise among other rides, 15 years old working 10-12 hours a day. Same music playing over, and over and over...I still cringe when I hear "It's So Nice To Be With You"...Yiikes. A right of passage was going to Al's Spaghetti House, nothing beat seeing Scotty "Elvis" Anderson and his band at Al's, or having fried clams before having to be home for curfew.
BillOnCapeCod 3 years ago 2
It was like Disney Land to go to Paragon when growing up on Shriley St in Roxbury!
Carbizzgirl 3 years ago
I remember the first time i crossed the Wier River just past the court house and the roller coaster was gone!
I loved the water slides and arcades.
And Hull was better when Paragon was open.
Who comes to Hull to visit the condo's?
HypeTv 3 years ago
Last time I checked, there was still miles of beach to hang out on... and if you know the right people, there's plenty to do there.

This park closed down before I was born. For you old people on YouTube, was Hull better before or after Paragon left? I only know the 90's and today.
LeprechaunEater 4 years ago
Better when I was growing up there "70s":
robbredman 2 years ago
growing upin Hull, Paragon will always be a special place. None of u other South Shore bitches had what we had. Hull is a mix of Dorcher hoodlum, plus Brockton pride, seasoned with Southie toughness and values. If you were from Hull, you were told you had 2 things if nothing else. Heart and Balls. maybe those were instilled from having rode the Round Up so many times as a kid....
jimwasajunkie 4 years ago
i took my kids to paragon park last labor day weekend and they had a ball. the smell of the clam cakes and the clams were awesome. kids were afraid to go n the coaster because it was made of wood. looking forward to going again next summer.

unlocktender 4 years ago
As close to an idylic experience as there could ever be. Spending summers in Nantasket and hearing such music classics for the first time ... enough there to last a lifetime. Great job indeed!
kenk52 4 years ago
I remember taking the boat from Boston's waterfront to Nantasket with my folks. After swimming at the beach, we would go to Joe & Nemo's for fried clams. Then, off to Paragon. Another spot we went to was Revere Beach amusement park, which closed around 1970. As a teenager, I went there during the final summer the park was open to say I rode "The Cyclone"...Well I almost had a heart attack. My mother told me I had rocks in my head for riding that "monster" in Revere!
jim02026 4 years ago
Nothing was ever more exciting than being taken down to the park and hitting the rotary in Hingham, knowing we were that much closer to the park. Then finally making the final turn by the cliffs and seeing the big coaster standing in the sky against the backdrop of the open water.
gruelurks 4 years ago
Gruelurks - I remember that moment! Making that final turn, seeing the giant white coaster looming in the distance. Everyone in the car would cheer!
utube9000 4 years ago

Lots of good memories covered up by condos that took years to sell and bankrupted the developer, the ghosts of paragon park were not happy.

Rich, Tia Esposito? :-)
No, this place was not Disney World.
Paragon Park was better!
InspireImages 4 years ago
While Six Flags America is a relatively modern park, The Wild One coaster dates back to 1917. It originally circled along one side of Paragon Park in Hull, MA, south of Boston, where it was known simply as the Giant Coaster. When the venerable seaside park closed (lamentably, along with so many other vintage amusement parks) in 1985, the Maryland park saved it from the wrecking ball.

All I can say is thank you for helping me relive my 70's childhood, from Kenburma St. in Hull. My sister Tia woked there in the 70's.
richracer 4 years ago
did she operate a ride? make salt water taffee or what?
Ponderosa65 4 years ago
She operated different rides and also worked in the midway games. I remember she would always come home with different prizes and even some of the hoops you would toss, lol. Oh yeah and lots of extra tickets. Thanks again Paragon!!!
