oh lord, this is awesome. I just got 'vauxhall' last week and this was the song that didn't jump out at me until about the fourth time through; when it did, I was totally gobsmacked. "Bunnie I loved you / I was tired again / I tried again." Then he follows it up with "spring-heeled jim": "he'll do; he'll never be done to." Moz questions traditional notions of masculinity with more courage, vision, and intelligence than ANYONE. And what an incredible version here, though he looks so sad...

@thenewmasses I think this period was the most emotional for Morrissey, since three close friends of him (Mick Ronson, Tim Broad, and Nigel Thomas) died. You can hear it in the songs of Vauxhall, they sound incredibly emotional, personal and peaceful to me, and they lack a lot of his usual wit and rocking sounds of his earlier work.

That's a hard task as so many of those songs are so brilliant - just got the CD after losing the cassette some time ago and was glad again to hear the 'lazy Sunbathers' that's not on Youtube. But yes, I keep coming back to this one. He's mellowed it - not puny brothers any more. But this version is fantastic!
