You can hear them in Las Vegas too. When I moved here from Washington, I was baffled by these bugs, and a bit annoyed too. But, I've gotten used to them.
Cool on 2 levels: one that you were able to isolate ONE M. cassini; usually they appear in droves; and two this is one of the few Magicicada videos that features the cassini call rather than M. septendecim.
@MooeyMcQuack416 same her i love hearing cicadas in the summer i moved to phoenix not sure if they got them here but if not ill miss em in Ohio thats what summer was out no school hot clear days fireflies an cicadas
This is a species of the17 year- periodical cicadas. It is magicicada cassini. What is uncommon is that it is alone, but this is not without precidence. Nice Find. Even if the you ran into a Lifetime Boob
there are a ridiculous amount in my backyard right now, and they weren't there yesterday lol. They are so freaking loud, but i kind of like the sound. the last time i heard them i was like, 5.
search 17-year cicada call on here click on the vid image of the orange cicada (if u've never seen one they look like big flies) on a leaf and it is much much much louder
@Racecars721 thanks - down where I come from in Georgia and now NC we call them July Flies cause they usually don't get too loud until then and the old time farmers used their cycles to determine the weather. I was taught that if you time from the end of the last sound of the July lies it will be about six weeks til the first frost of the season. Past experience for me has shown this to be pretty true. I love the sound of them - such a small creature makes so much sound.
Most Tinnitus suffers will love this....Fuck bcos i know i did..

The ones I always hear on a hot day make more of a buzzing sound, maybe the video doesn't give the sound justice?

You hear these in the background of Japanese movies all the time, I just looked this up to confirm my suspicion of what the noise actually is.
They sound cool. I live in central new york, never heard these IRL
