It makes one proud to be British , Good old Rolls Royce, when flying and you look out the window , the Rolls Royce badge on the Engine cowlings always gives me confidence in a safe Aircraft.
great video 6 hours for an engine change not bad timing considering the complexity of the aircraft and the engine Question how many hours can you get on an engine before required change over?
how much testing do they have to do before they approve the new engine installation to fly passengers ? Do they run it for a few hrs , go on a test flight, etc ? Also, what do they do with the old engine ? Sell it to south america ?
Seeing a video like this makes you realise how smart the human race is to build a machine like this and be able to understand how to build and fix it...its just amazing!
@samthecat07 Its the types of Struts are used. The wings dont just hold the engines and the fuel, the whole body is supported by the wings also. Also the way a plane is designed, when its sitting on the ground the top of the wing is under tension and the bottom is under compression forces so when its more comfortable in the air
@samthecat07 one the ground they have to hold their own weight plus engine, but airbone the wings actually hold the entire aircraft - about 1000-1500 pounds per squaremetre. but they can take much much more before breaking.
@baaaaaba94 that is the water getting caught by the suction of the intake rotor.. i work with beauties and is very common to see it after or during a shower... you see it especially during engine startup and take off... during idle it is possible to see if there is enough water near the it's 14ft. intake zone
@baaaaaba94 that is the water getting caught by the suction of the intake rotor.. i work with beauties and is very common to see it after or during a shower... you see it especially during engine startup and take off... during idle it is possible to see if there is enough water near the it's 14ft. intake zone. a vortex is formed very much like a tornado or whirlpool effect
@210482fmj If they did, the tips of the fan blades would be going too fast and the engine would rip itself apart. New designs of the fan blade are now allowing them to take in more air at a slower speed than before however, so we're seeing gradually more and more powerful engines.
What's amazing is that jet engines are so finely balanced, that just having a gentle breeze blowing through them is enough to make them windmill as seen here.
Instead of whining about the archaic units, I suppose it'd be more productive to just grab my calculator, use the conversion tool a bit and share the numbers in a more international format: Idle thrust 13 kN. Take-off thrust 410 kN. Intake cowling diameter 4.3 m. Idle consumption 0.2 kg/s*. Take-off consumption 3.9 kg/s*. Mass 6 800 kg. Max take-off mass 297 000 kg. Max range 14 300 km. (*Jet-A fuel density at 288 K: 775 to 840 kgm^-3 conversion made with a rounded figure of 800.)
Oh and if you want to be totally anal about going with international units, the rotational speed of the main fan would be 55 Hz then... but RPM is used in everyday life even outside North America and Britain.
Can someone please tell me why the new engine rotates before it was actually installed on the plane? Do they spin because someone just touched them or do they have to spin?
Are the engines replaced in pairs? how many engines does a 777 go through in its typical lifetime. if a plane is 20 years old for example, how many engines will it have gone through?
wow only 6 hours to change the whole engine of aircraft??? and you go to volkswagen to change a little piece that costs 12 dollars. they charge you 10 hours for the labor! I remember paying 1200 dollars to have something changed. And I also remember that around 80 percent of the cost was labor cost. I was pissed...
Amazing bit of engineering both in the engine and the mounting and connection points to allow this in 6 hours. I remember at the Reno Air Races a Blue Angel F18 needed an engine change - it couldn't have been more than an hour - probably more like 30-45 minutes.
I remember at Boeing Field GE would charter a Russian Transport to bring these engines out.
Imagine the metallurgy of those turbine blades - 14 feet in diameter and 3300 rpm.
@Sanosuke004 No that is not Paine Field I live next to Paine Field. And that is not the boeing plant. It just looks live on of AA's hangers somewhere else.
That question hast been replied many times, check the comments next time buddy.
A: Its the wind blowing that makes them spin and some personnel spins them. Because of the low friction they spin pretty easily, and they did speed up the video x times hence why it look likes it spins fast.
6 hours????? SORRY. I've gotta call the BULLSHIT flag on that one. I just don't see how that's possible. Never changed one on a 777 but I've changed at least 20 on the USAF KC-10A Extender. (militarized dc-10) and it was about took at least 12 hours with 6 veterans working it.

@stephqaz well, to be fair, FS is a computer generated interpritation, although it is extremely accurite, in real life them engines produce about 80k lbs of thrust pushing an empty plane forward as long as there is forward momentum the plane will just follow where the front wheels are facing :)
