This is a great video, great meke all round from everyone, its great to hear the fijian songs and the combination of polynesian and melanesian cultures come together.....Vinaka, sa totoko dina na meke =)
Wonderful performance. It's true that traditionally Fijian men and women dance separately but modern interpretations using modern popular songs have men and women dancing together (yes! even in Fiji and particularly with the younger generation). So well Done!
Iam originaly from Fiji i really love this,i like people practice my culture and tradition and dont have to be like at home as long as they have a go....brilliant perfomens...Vinaka vakalevu
@22871987 - oilei ratai Mr/Ms Qereti ! just enjoy the meke ! this is 2010 ...... sa toso na gauna ; sa veisau na ka. Im Fijian, i choreograph Fijian mekes (daunivucu) & i totally enjoy this totally for what it is - at least these canadian kids have taken time and effort to learn about my culture ! what about OUR FIJIAN kids?! you tell me what %tage of fijian kids esp those growing up in city areas have ever danced a fijian meke? they'd rather hiphop or tamure! so give these kids props !!
This dance is put on by the students of Pearson College in Victoria, BC, Canada. The students come from many countries around the world. They work together in unison, men and women, in order to promote equality and peace in the world. I think that is the message they are sending here with this dance. It may indeed be a dance where men dance on their own and women dance by themselves. However, their intentions are not to offend but to deliver their message of equality for all.
good fusion of pacific island dances.. i say that because its not a TRADITIONAL fijian MEKE. no offence. lol. fijian men and women rarely perform together, and for fijian women who perform a seasea "seh-ah-seh ah" [where they stand] there is very little movement of the feet and subtle movements of the head and body, seasea's are also performed with the IRI NI MEKE or fan. dont mean to sound like a "smart arse" lol, just a little bit of fijian trivia for all.
best performance i have ever seen !! :)

Well done boys and girls. You make us Fijian proud with your performance.

Congratulations, kids. You put your heart into it. Much better than some dances put together for tourists back home in Fiji.
