It's fine, chickenfoot is a far more interesting/relevant band than a shitty rehash of Van Halen. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony are the chillest guys in the music business.
Mike really does seem like the guy next door. Very normal. Overshadowed by Eddie, he's a great bass player and a HUGE part in VH's background vocals. Something VH has greatly loss now. Because of Mike doing outside work from VH and all the political crap that's been in that band since 1996 is the reason he's not there today (Eddie's push!). He also signed away his name from VH completey in the mid 00's. Michael Anthony will no longer be metioned alongside VH anymore. That's the VH circus 4 ya!
I miss Mike. It will never be the same. I'll continue to praise the VH bros. as musicians. Ed is my main man (Big Rev,. Al too). No matter how many stupid decisions he makes, i.e.: a.) Hiring Roth back. b.) Firing Mike (My question is: Who gonna make up for Roth's shortcomings vocally,on stage like Mike?). c.) Hiring his son. I could accept Wolfgang being in the band if Ed croaked, but he didn't. He should not be there until then, period. give him a gig in 5150 as a studio hand, not the band.
Out of all the members of Van Halen, even over David and Eddie, Michael Anthony is my favorite member, he's not an asshole, he's cool, down to earth, nice, and he's the most underrated band member. Wish Eddie wasn't such a dick, BRING BACK MICHAEL ANTHONY, FUCK WOLFGANG!
One of the coolest things that I have heard this guy say was that he was able to buy his dad a car after his remarkable success. Nice job Mike! I respect that about you.
@AntichristUtubeStar the fact that ppl still have to point out daves importance and diss sammy after all these years actually is a compliment to the van hagar years.you rarely hear dave needs van halen....BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT!! lol
I remember this being a part of a larger special on the F.U.C.K. album. My feel on this is that it was a big thing to nab VH for interviews like this (which is why Loder had this assignment in the first place -he was the older "Kronkite" news guy on MTV, his female partner being Tabby Soren, who interviewed Clinton. Loder felt he had to vilify DLR for fear of offending these guys. I've seen Loder interview DLR later and he was kissing his ass the same way he did these guys. Kurt tried too hard.
Michael Anthony is Van Halen. You don't have Van Halen without Michael Anthony. Ed railroaded him out of the group and forgets he would be nothing without Michaell Anthony. Michael Anthony was the glue that held Van Halen together.
@ truth, go listed to their first 6 albums, put some head phones on and follow his bass playing, back then ed didnt play a rythem over most of his solos, it was alex and mike, and he really kicks ass on most every song, listen to the woman and children first album. micheal anthony is an awesome bass player, just gets overlooked cuz u got eddie, dave and alex. give it a listen u may change ur mind
Kurt Loder is a fucking tool. That annoying laugh he has is way over done here, forced in fact, to give legitimacy to him interviewing members of Van Halen.
Mike is a very cool and down-to-earth guy. He lives in my town of Glendora and he's very approachable. He is also very conservative and a great family man.
A well-grounded guy and definitely generous with his immediate family.
I worked at a company in Monrovia with his brother, Bob (Sobolewski), Mike's real surname, Anthony is his middle name. One day, his brother, Bob, who worked in shipping and receiving, came to work with a brand new Chevy Blazer, that Mike bought him. How cool is that?
these were the good ole days of the band, when everyone got along, when vh was smokin red hot on the charts, albums sold like a motherfucker, and even die-hard dlr-era fans gave their appreciation despite loathing sam at the mic. why oh why, cant the band return to these type of glory days...regardless of whos at the mic...be it hagar, roth or cherone.
You know these interviews and a lot of you good people's comments are all very fascinating and fun!
SERIOUSLY-- some really good (& totally "objective") INDEPENDANT "movie director" really... really... NEEDS to make a whole EPIC BIOGRAPHICAL MOVIE about =VH=!!!
Thinking creatively about the name?? Perhaps they could call it something like "Inside the VAN??" or something like that????!!
Any ideas????! :)
If it was "done well".....then well, that would be one hell of a good film!
about the vocals, WHY THE FUCK did they bring in gary cherone for vh III. i heard a song with mike singing all the way through and i thought it sounded better than garys. gary sounded good when he was with Extreme, but 20 years later, GARY SUCKS
why are interviews so damn stupid, it reminds of one where a bunch of retarded interviewers interviewed Angus Young about his MAILBOX. but at least he was patient and they finally left, they aren't real fans, i dont know if michael would let them ask "OH MY GOD IS THAT A MAILBOX?!" he would probably tell them to fuck off or something, michael is legend at bass, and angus and eddie are both legends at guitar thats my opinion
Kurt Freeloader, did what he did for MTV back in the Day not much promps here.Micheal Anthony stuck with Sammy after the break up.When VH 3 failed he went the way he thought best good for him.He is now rewarded with the greatest band I have seen or heard in some quite time(CHICKENFOOT)Check them out truly an awsome lineup.I had given up on the music idustry for 20 plus years but this band gives me hope!!!!!!!!!
@nickthecomedian u like the idea of a fat bloated 16 year old in van halen? hahaha ur a fuckin toss face idiot, lets get miley to sing for led zepp ,,,u fuckin waste of sperm and egg
Fun fact: Michael Anthony is the richest member of Van Halen. From what I understand, by a pretty good amount! He was very smart from day one and immediately invested his earnings and has done very well for himself. Pretty cool since, IMO, he is the most deserving member because of his attitude and down to earth personality. Ed, while a God, is an asshole. BRING BACK MIKE ANTHONY! Wolfgang has about as much stage presence as a dog turd. I don't give a shit what Ed says. M.A. is the true bassist!
@dajzilla no shit! lol hahahaha. Go for him man. He seems like an awesome guy. I've gotta say, he's absolutely terrible at bass. hahahaha. god bless him though. his stage presence and humor absolutely makes up for it
@dajzilla ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Fun fact: Michael Anthony is the richest member of Van Halen. From what I understand, by a pretty good ........how did you find out?
@dajzilla Cool - Mike comes across as an absolutely top bloke. Humble - his vocals really are a huge part of the Van Halen sound and he was willing to play a rhymic role on bass although he is clearly well capable of more intricate lines as evidenced especially on their first 4 albums (and on later tracks such as Girl Gone Bad). In my opinion DLR deserved to be fired in the 80s but unfortunately I think the meth (and booze) got to Ed by the time Mike was fired...
@dajzilla Id want to see some financials...Sammy owned Cabo Wabo and sold it for 30 million dollars....he did that recently. Other than that, ya...MA is cool!
@dajzilla im not sure if mike has more cash then sammy but he has done very well for himself.i do think there is a high amount of jealousy coming from eddie towards anyone who has the abilty to make a huge amount of cash outside of the band.alex is his brother and has no business sense and outside of van halen dave has shown no abilty to create a cash flow so they are in.i think for his age wolfie does well but i'd much rather see mike up there....he's just better.
i fuckin love mikey. he is so easy going and by no means a "rockstar" he is peace loving guy and should be back in Van Halen even tho everyone else in that band is an egomaniac.
Because Edward is an ass. Michael Anthony only went on the last tour with Hagar because Sammy wouldnt play without him, but he went on tour as a "hired gun" of sorts, which meant he made way less than the other 3. Ed started bitching that he always had to show Michael all the parts and bitchin the way Eddie does. Basically Ed's ego for a short answer
Yeah, I lost a lot for Ed when I started learning a lot of stuff. He was my God while I was in high school, but once I started to dig deeper I found out a lot of crap. He still is amazing but as a person I dont like him. All the lying he use to do in interviews, always trying to act so humble. He tried too hard. But yeah the whole Michael Anthony situation really pissed me off. I refused to see them because of it
oh really? like what kind of stuff did Eddie lie about? i'm not asking sarcastically, i really do want to know. yeah the whole Michael Anthony thing was really a bummer and he seems to be such a genuinely nice guy. we'll probably never know the "whole" story but oh well....he was still an integral part of the band no matter what anyone says
So much stuff to make himself seem amazing. I never understood why he would, he was amazing enough. For example, in an interview, he said he didnt have a solo written for "On Fire", and when they went in the studio, the guys told him to pretend he was John Mclaughlin, and thats how he came up with it. But in live shows years before he played the same solo. He use to say his solos on the first album were improvised, but again, on live shows from 76 he plays most of them the same.
He will also claim invention of the DTuna when in reality he bought the patent for it. When he was still with Ernie Ball, the guy came to Ernie ball with the DTuna, and Eddie offered him a ton of money for the patent, which he now owns and even has a story about how "he" came up with the DTuna.
The guy didn't actually work at ernie ball. He invented it by himself, basically like Floyd Rose, and took it to Ernie Ball and Eddie offered him a good chunk of money for the patent and obviously got it.
No problem. I didnt know until I got the opportunity to talk face to face with the guy who was the artist rep at Ernie Ball at that time and was in the meeting when Ed purchased the patent. He had a lot of good stories.
He also doesnt give credit where its due. Its obvious that Van Halens biggest influence is ZZ Top. But ive never read or heard Eddie talk about them, because he knows it would give a lot away. He's always talking about clapton because they sound nothing like cream, which makes them seem more original. Which they are, but much more obviously comparable to ZZ Top. Plus he complains way too much about everything lol but thats enough for now. Still love what he did...
I have a feeling you and could talk about this stuff all day - I love talking about VH for some reason. Oh, one thing though, I heard the band used to say that they modeled themselves after Montrose, believe it or not
p.s. If Mike can get booted out of VH anyone can! No one is save in this band unless your last is VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!
