I don't know why everyone bags on coach Starr yea he was like this to us we went 13-1 that season lost agaisnt crenshaw at the final but bet them before and we won 2 oth championships. Players like Steve smith from N.Y giants was our receiver also malcom smith LB from USC Chris Polk from Washington also jeshua Anderson, Craig noble, Deandre bowman, jarrell and Hamites holland, Larry drew he plays basketball for north Carolina also was an athlete. Here at Taft.
I was an amazing athlete in high school. Did lots of yoga, running, and weights.
I could run, fast, throw well and had good size.
Very diversified and self-motivated with a good feel for just about any sport.
But I could never get into the mindset that most coaches think needs to be instilled to make people motivated and perform...the drill "sarge"...totally killed it for me.
So I ditched team sports and became a solo tennis player and swimmer.
Well said. I could not have put it better...the "sarge" mentality=perfect!...and this video is the tip of the iceberg from what I've seen...although, it appears CIF is doing what it can to stop the coaches, and parents, from getting too crazy over a call. They banned us from all games held @ LAUSD schools. We haven't even put up the really amazing stuff...we dont want people to lose jobs, just shape up.
Constant swearing ruins the effectiveness of a good cuss word. We worked with coach Croson 3yrs @Bham, some at Chaminade, and never heard the guy swear...ever. His teams won 4 L.A. City Chmpnshps in 6yrs. The players rally around him like Skywalker to Yoda. A benevolent taskmaster who emphasizes team and character. He doesn't swear, doesn't have to..difference tween Positive vs Negative re-enforcement...when a player's challenged on the street, what then?swear at him? That's what coach did.
Tony Dungy is walking proof that you don't have to yell, scream, cuss, and blast officials to be an effective coach. And this guy won a Super Bowl, so there's no reason why any other coach should be cussing and screaming and doing some of the things they do. Unfortunately, you don't often see coaches anymore that put sportsmanship above success on the field.
oh and btw can anybody tell me why its called football when feet and balls rarely come into contact, and also whys it called a touchdown when you dont have to touch the ball down
This is what football is. If you dont like it you dont have to force your kids to play. I played high school football and what you see here is nothing. I mean i can only imagine what those college coaches say. The swearing could be over the top but this kind of intensity is what football is
i dont see the problem i played football and this is how it is why cause they swear and get emotional were supposed to act surprised??? the only people who would find this crazy are religous people who never played the game or road the bench or are just pussies who cant take it. Who cares coaches should be like this its called emotion for the game coaches that dont act like that when things go wrong are on shitty teams.
haha you call that Coaches gone wild? thats just a bunch of middle aged men who dont know how to cuss. those are not coaches gone wild. it pisses me off to see to see the player at the beginning who dissrespects his coaches and wont even let him talk.
ok ok.. now who here has actually played hs football? these coaches have to be psyched up and swearing and screaming and all that cuz that's what gets the players pumped. it's all about the game. yea they're teachers of these athletes too
wow jhaul21 you are an idiot. sure football is a man's sport because guys play it but it isn't an excuse for them to act like pigs. you are in control of yourself and you are responsible for that. a stupid game doesn't change who you are
I haven't seen this thing in months and it still annoys me. You don't have to swear when you're calling your team into a huddle. saying "fuck" every 5 seconds.
Yesterday i was coaching and I said to a kid "don't fuckin' walk after finishing the bags, run through"... i lost my cool too and it happens. But too much is too much.
Coaches need to learn to stay calm while competitive. It's like if you eat the same meal everyday, you're gonna get sick of it.
Yelling, swearing, and losing it happens everywhere, I'd be shocked if coaches NEVER did it, shows they lack competitiveness. But you can get the point across without swearing and stuff. Coaches who swear all the time, lose control of themselves, and will eventually lose control of the program. Of course you don't want angels on the field, but theres too much also.
Well the seriousness in high school is a little bit crazy, but in college there's a lot of money and these guys are passionate, I'd rather have that than a guy like BYU's coach who doesn't care.
Yeah I was referring to HS, kids = HS, adults = College. But still the same thing can apply to college.
BYU's coach is competitive, as is Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, etc.... These guys wouldn't be college coaches if they weren't, but I don't think they go out and go balistic like here.
You can be fiery, competitive, and passionate... and every coach is bound to go past the boiling limit eventually... but it doesn't have to happen on this kind of extreme.
I don't like the fact that the coach cusses so much and yells so much. Angry tirades work sometimes when you do it right. But if you always yell and cuss then the players aren't going to take you seriously. My head coach yells a good bit and nobody really listens to him all that much, however we just got new DB coach that never yells, talks really calm and demands respect. In my opinion he is a much better coach.
My coach in 8th grade always said, "I'm yelling at your position not you." In 9th grade, my freshman head coach would rip me apart everyday for not making the right reads on a slant or a seam and what not. It taught me how to have thick skin, and how now while i am on varsity, the varsity coaches are yelling at me and i'm already used to it.

I had a coach in high school who would explode at the refs when he thought that they made a bad call. I can remember one game where we were all in the locker room at the half, the coach yelled at the top of his lounges on how bad we were playing on defense, I mean he lost it. During the 3 years that I was on the Varsity Squad, the most upsetting experience to me would that my coach would not allow me to start (Offense or Defense) during my senior year. I felt like it was very unfair to me.
In our small town several kids who quit our football program, because they couldn't handle ass rippings or the intensity or the work or whatever, eventually joined the fucking army and went to Iraq. Some have served multiple tours.
God love and bless and protect them always.
I'm sure their experiences over there make double sessions on a football field full of screaming coaches seem like a happy place.
& sportsmanship? Does "passion" excuse him from running across the field, yelling at opposing player? Passion, yes, poor sportsmanship and setting a bad example, no. Coach needs to learn sportsmanship before he can teach by example. BTW, he also, hits and swears at kids if you watch closely (we don't show him calling them "stupid" and "moron", but he does...and this was his M.O. most of the time...perhaps too much passion caused his actions..? Perhaps a bit less passion, more common sense.
The guy's apparently a wanker with issues. I only defended him outta the gate because, let's face it, there are SO many parents who undermine GOOD coaches. I'm tired of all the whining. That said, I'm not gonna defend this guy who shouldn't be working with our children. He's hung himself. And alot of people here on YouTube know this situation BETTER than me, so I trust you and won't disagree.
BTW, in football you can always use more common sense, but you can NEVER have too much passion or think that a bit less passion will fix what you perceive to be a problem.
That is why you fail, as a player or a player's mom or whatever your deal is.
You missed the point. I love passion in sports, esp. football. What i hate is anger, demeaning criticism and physical intimidation by the coach. Sets terrible example and says it's ok to solve problems with violence. The best coaches use positive re-enforcement with young athletes, not negative, bullying tactics. Did you see the 60 Minutes segment on this? These methods prove counterproductive. Just my opinion as former player & teacher.
The first clip of this video shows a player cussing and disrespecting the coaches while they're out of the room. So obviously this is the culture within the program, top to bottom.
I coached 10 years in a public high school program in which the head coach demanded that no coaches or players curse.
HOWEVER, there were definitely effective and angry tirades! Complete ass-rippings. Never personal - just football.
You said I missed the point, but most folks replying to this disagree with u 2.
I saw nothing out of line at all. Telling a player to "fuck his shit up" isn't telling him to literally try to hurt that player, just trying to reinforce the mentality that you got to have to play defense in football.
I think for the prayer part, the coaches should hand each player a consent form, and if everybody agrees that the Lord's prayer is ok for them, then they should be allowed to do it. If anyone disagrees, then they shouldn't be allowed, considering it is public property and all
I agree, EXCEPT at the end of the clip the coach crosses all the way to other side (almost) and yells, points at a player he believed interfered with his wide receiver. That's wrong, and sets a really bad example to the kids. Personally, I have no problem with praying on the field, but if it is a school that gets money from the Federal government, it's illegal, that's it, no debate you can't do it. L.A. City schools are partially funded by Feds. A silent moment is not illegal however.

Never played footbal but totally agree with jjoosshh. I wrestled in high school from 7-12th grades and it got rough to. I got yelled at, screamed, in my grill, I even got slapped! Did I cry or quit? Hell no! I understood where my coaches were coming from, put yourself in their shoes always makes everything make sense! And yea, if you disagree then your a pussy!!!!
dude u have obviously never played the game... This is football weather u like it or not.. The yelling gets u fired up for the next play.. if ur gonna be a pussy and cry about getting yelled at then stay away from the game
Pro ball 1968-1974, asst coach, teacher 1975-present
So what? Not important (save teacher, coach). Dont need to be a player to spot a bad teacher or coach. It's Negative vs Positve re-enforcement. Some coaches destroy confidence, not build it, esp. in young kids. Too much yelling/swearing loses effectiveness and may destroy an insecure player, esp. terms like "stupid" "moron"...some primadonnas need butt kicked...not kids.
Where did you play jjoosh? Did you like abuse? Sounds like it...ok, just don't make my kid put up with your dumbass remarks and bullying, mr. wanna be macho "dude." I played for years and I know the difference 'tween asshole coaches and great ones, since I played for both. Play by the rules if you're gonna play. Dumb? 'Fraid it's you who ain't got a clue. Take a cold shower.
well u obviously sucked at football so the coaches didnt waste time yelling at you.. Im not trying to act macho.. Im saying that it is part of the game and if ur a sissy who cant handle it then stay away from the game.. and yea I played in pottstown PA, three year starter.. and nobody likes getting yelled at off course.. but I didnt cry about, it motivated me to get better
Of course coaches yell, but it's what they say that can be destructive. I've seen kids confidence destroyed by calling them "stupid" or "idiots." It's especially bad for kids who might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer. I don't think Tideline meant yelling per se, but cutting a kid down and humiliating him...some coaches work that way, but things are changing. Thanks SidelineVideo for bringing up the debate.
MrLuckyDog probably said what I tried to say, only better. Ha ha!
You can go R. Lee Ermey style on a player without the cussing and finish it with, "you're better than that, I know you are!" and kids respond positively to that regardless of how bad they just got their ass chewed.
Spot on jledgehammer and MrLucky...yelling is ok sometimes, a lot in football, but look at John Wooden, hardly any emotion, at least on the outside...and there's nothing really wrong with anything in this vid until the very end...but last year there were a lot of fights and disruptions by coaches...insults and actual physical altercations...so its good to discuss this...im not for the pussyfacation of kids, honest, thanks for your opinions.
I think he meant violence after the whistle or in everyday life...of course football is violent and cussing is fun sometimes, but coaches do set the tone and need to control their actions...negative vs positive re-enforcement...stay positive, yell and cuss all you want. That coaches actions say to the kids that it's ok to break the rules and go after somebody if you don't agree with a call or life decision. Bad teacher, bad student.
high school coaches are so pathetic. they take the games so serious coaching nothing but a bunch of kids. they are just the losers who love being in control for once in their life but are too shitty to be a real coach like college and nfl coaches.
Point is, they ARE teachers and role models so they gotta have good character habits and be able to teach discipline and set a good examples. What if one of the kids ran across the field after an opposing player like Troy Starr did to the Shaw DB? What would he have done if he confronted him? He wouldn't play the next game, or maybe not at all. So how can he teach kids they MUST turn the aggro attitude completely OFF when off the field and in living life.

wow that comment makes no sense, you must have been cut from your high school teams cuase your a unathletic slug. First off, to be a college or proffesional coach you must know someone or have been something in that sport. second, unless you are a real athlete, and I dont mean just make the team, i mean desire and will to win at all costs short of intentionaly hurting someone, you wont get it. My coaches used to scream at me not only does it motivate it shows that they have will to win as well
Coaches lead by example. Going after another player, running accross the field, calling players "stupid" or "moron" dropping the F bomb, grabbing the facemask is counterproductive and sets a BAD example. The best coaches are controlled and aware of how to get the best out of athletes. Cussing, yelling is commonplace and usually has little effect after a time but it's HOW the coaches lead and what they do that is important. BTW, not that it matters, I was a pro athlete, played footbal in HS.
We have no problem with kids and coaches praying before a game (or anytime), however, it is technically illegal on public school property. Separation of church and state so they are breaking a federal law I believe. So what? if that's what they want and they believe it helps prepare them for battle , but you can only pray on private property, schools like Crespi, Notre Dame, Chaminade. Besides, most coaches would do anything to win, why not try prayer, sure couldn't hurt. But not on publc lnd.
its not an issue of separation of church and state. people always think that separation of church and state means no religous symbols of any kind on government property. Not true; it means that Congress shall declare no national religion. praying on the field is not a congressional declaration of christianity, judaism, islam etc.
So it IS ok to pray on Los Angeles public school property? I thought that was a no-no, but I really don't know the exact law...so set me straight if you know. I have nothing against prayer in school, we prayed all the time in Catholic school, but I always thought that separation of church & state was reason you can't pray in "public" school class or football field. The coach leading prayer in vid was from a Catholic school and this was his first game at Taft. Anyone know if open prayer is ok?
BTW, they were saying the Lord's prayer "Our father who art in heaven..." so I think that IS a declaration of christianity...? Unless I missed the muslim version. It's fine if you just tell the kids "OK everyone take a knee" and then say a silent prayer, or not, what you like, which is what we do. A silent moment to pray, meditate or think about the game or your algebra homework...but leading the Lord's Prayer...?
Actually, in a public school, or any school or org that gets Fedral funding, you cannot pray if you want...only in pvt schools....and it has nothing to do with Muslims.
You keep saying this, and it is patently false. This issue is one of illegal policy being enforced. There is no such thing as "Separation of Church and State" in the way you are using it. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.".
I didn't say that...MrLuckyDog did, but I agree...that's the law, period. If you disagree and believe that it is an "...illegal policy being enforced" then you can sue the govt...why dont you...you sound really worked up over it...funny no one else has sued them...? Maybe you ought to do some research on the law...lots of laws not specifically mentioned in Constitution besides, does not The Lord's Prayer conflict w/ "Congess shall make no law respecting an establisment of religion"..? Nod YES.
yes, you did say it, and said it again. the Lord's prayer in no way conflicts with "Congress shall make no law". Explain what law is being made if a prayer is said. None. Show the "Federal Law" you spoke of. You cannot. I DID show THE HIGHEST LAW OF THE LAND which CANNOT BE CONTRAVENED BY ANY LEGISLATION OTHER THAN A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT. Are you an uneducated, arrogant dumbass who can't produce a valid legal argument but pretends he is knowledgeable and can't read English? Nod YES.
I've got nothing against prayer is schools...except that it's illegal...but I do have a problem with right wing name calling fanatics who think their way is the only way and use/misuse the Constitution to prop up a tired argument...the issue has been decided...you lost!...Sue them if you are so sure you're right, govt has clear guidelines on what's not ok : Commandments in courthouse, religious symbols on public property, prayer in class...no law against a a fool's rant however, go for it.
AGAIN, you show your abject stupidity and lack of knowledge of law and Constitutionality. I HAVE NO "STANDING" to be able to file such a claim, you stupid a-hole. If I knew of a way, I would file suit. You are proud of your lack of knowledge and shout it from the rooftops. You live an unexamined life...one not worth living. Pathetic.
"Illegal policy being enforced"...RIDICULOUS! Whose policy? and it survived through Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and G. W.? why didn't they address this "illegal policy"? what did the Supreme Court say?...Illegal policy? Ha, what a laugh.
Slavery and Jim Crow were crimes against humanity and un-Constitutional. Are you saying they were not because laws were passed and "it survived some guys in tha whytehouse"? (sniff...sniff....tearing up...but I'm smart ANYWAY"). No you are not. You have no idea what freedom looks like, you brainwashed metrosexual degenerate. Ha, what a laugh you gave me, dumbass.
Wrong, dumbass."Congress shall make no law..." . Saying a prayer, which people can opt out of, is not Congress making a law. You REALLY are stupid. It SHOULD be handled as a moment of silence where one can choose to think about Yahweh,Budda,Muhammed, or their grocery list. Uneducated clowns with a socialist agenda, however, have intimidated schools systems via lawsuits into simply banning anything related to religion from being anywhere but private property. Nonsense.Read Federalist papers.
Socialist agenda...cool. We need more of that. Power to the people. BTW, call me whatever you want but it just makes you look weak...keep it civil, less name calling please, and address why it is that the Lord's prayer or religious symbols are NOT allowed in school...it's been challenged in court..any lawyers out there?
Pathetic. Uneducated ass prattling away about nothing. "It's been challenged in court...". Dred Scott was challenged in the Supreme Court...according to your idiotic, uneducated, non-thinking tripe, you believe a black is only 3/5s a person, right? Can't answer honestly? Says a lot about you and your uneducated "nething da gubmint sez iz ok wit mee" stupidity.
Next, we review your assinine statement "socialism..power to the people". Jackass: show where a socialist govt was anything but oppressive towards its people, stripping freedom for more power. You cannot. You are weak. Weak minded, proud of your stupidity, yelling it with a megaphone, as if that will make your nonsense true. You make me sick. You are no American.
I think it IS an issue of separation of church and state...read the law...you can't favor any religion over another and can't pray on Federal property or any property that gets Fed funds. If football field is on a public school property then they can't pray and receive Fed money.
Coaches are teachers, some of the best teachers out there (for the most part.) Coaches teach discipline, how to hold people accountable for their actions and how to be a man.
anyone who talks trash, why dont you volunteer your time and teach these players right. most coaches are idiotic, and are terrible role models, but you never stepped foot in their shoes
Sorry you got a real dumbass for a coach MegaDave, ignore his tirades, he doesnt have a clue how to coach kids. Picture this:Ucla QB Craft goes into locker room at half & he threw four INT's and Coaches Chow, Neuheisel go off on him, calling him a f***ing idiot, screaming how bad he played...instead, Neuheisel told him not to worry, settle down, start fresh and that he, coach N, threw four INT's in his first game too & he was a Rose Bowl MVP. Kids need confidence, real teaching not namecalling.
I think the guy who put this up played in Rose Bowl (Ucla) in 1965! He made the defining play of game on last play. He's a teacher and believes you teach violence and bad behavior by overreacting to situations. I agree.
Pro ball 1968-1974, asst coach, teacher 1975-present

This Tirads sucks compaired to coch burns! Burns, (coach in 1987 of the vikings) had the best tirad ever he said the "f-word" about 15 times, "shit" about 10 times, and "hell" about 30 times in the press confrece! and his team won the game! If you all want to hear the tirad send me a message and I will send you the link to hear it!
A little man who suffers from a great inferiority complex; I mean, really, this guy, coach or not, has some real issues....and not a damn one admirable.
I played football, I learned 10 times more from my coaches than I did from my teachers. I'm now a software engineer for a leading aeronautics company. Football coaches, if they are good, teach you life lessons (don't give up, respect others, determination, you can be more than you think you are, etc)
Anyone who has faced someone who outweighs them by more than 100 pounds and has to collide with them will tell you that football changes you in a positive way.
Two words: bush league. This guy thinks he's mini Ditka, but these are HS kids. TEACH THEM, Einstein, don't just yell unintelligibly like some kind of coked up traffic cop.
btw, technically, they cant pray on public school property
either, but this was the new (replacement) coaches first game (he was only there one yr, then Starr came back). The principal, Ms Sharon Thomas should have stopped them from saying The Lord's Prayer on school premises just take a knee, moment of silence is what most do...i have no problem w/ prayer, most dont (might help), but it is against Federal law. Coaches behavior, lack of leadership, bad role model more significant imho.
"technically, they cant pray on public school property
either">>>>completely false. there is nothing in the Constitution that says a person has freedom of speech and religion UNLESS they are on school/state/govt property. Think so? Show me where, in the document. There is no "Federal Law" that can override the Constitution.
As a high school football player, I don't mind when coaches curse due to a bad play, but when they say stuff like.."Fuck his shit up" that's just immature
Worse may be calling a kid "stupid" or a "moron"...when perhaps the kid is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer..destroys any confidence and self worth...with a confident smart kid the effect is not as traumatic at all...Starr used to call Stve Smith names (stupid) to no effect. Smith was too confident and too good to have this guy rattle him at all. But a less talented/mature kid...?
Yr of the Bull...thanks...is that the doc of the Florida HS where the coach dares the kid to hit him, then rushes him...? That doc was amazing...showed all the bad...and some good...that was that team & staff that yr.
EZ to see why...that coach was out of control and it seemed to take its toll on the team...did not show good sense...that's why they lost @ state finals to a smaller, slower team who were huge underdogs. Good film.
You're kidding, right? Bats? Plastic bats though right? Did they go off on you during games? Did they show good sportsmanship at games? Mine didnt. Some coaches seem to encourage "bad manners" (see Starr's outburst @ City final), and bad attitude toward opponents & refs. Just show some class.
hey were you one of those guys that werent good at sports sports would be terrible if the coaches didnt get in the players face and light a fire under their ass
You oughtah see the really "hard core" Woody Hayes like actions i got while shooting Taft football...these are the lightweight clips...(most Taft coaches were great, but he literally broke every CIF rule in the Blue Book (see Coaches ethics) & i have video of much of it...can't believe he said/did some of the things i got on tape. You'll never see it, i'm not out to get him fired/arrested, just spanked.
Fact is, some HS programs ARE very hard core and very intense...college is in the balance, but actions like hitting kids & embarrassing them in front of team/school and running onto the field pointing and yelling at a kid on the other team...what kind of example/role model is that? Coaches teach kids by their actions and players reflect attitudes/actions of coaches. Teach players to leave the violence on the field.
Right you are...so let's leave the violence on the field. By (bad) example, some coaches infer that kids (and coaches) can solve problems with violence OFF the field, or, in Starr's case, by attempting to intimidate by running all the way accross the field and yelling/pointing fingers at the Crenshaw player. He really should have been disciplined for this and flagged by refs and kicked out of game...and more. Many examples of poor sportmanship in this yrs playoffs too...sad.
Im a varsity boys basketball coach.....and this looks like a championship game...you shouldnt have to pump them up...you have to try to get your team pumped over a game that can be a letdown....or vs a weaker opponent....
Since you asked for comments, I just want to say that your "pointed questions" for discussion are a total joke. This is a high school football team. I guarantee you 100% that every one of those players used such degrading potty-mouth language that makes the baby jesus cry before ever meeting the coach. And yes, coaches can get angry and sometimes they will display that anger in a public forum. Astounding!
Terrible Coach.

Who cares coaches should be like this its called emotion for the game coaches that dont act like that when things go wrong are on shitty teams.

Of course you don't want angels on the field, but theres too much also.
dsikorski31 2 years ago
Well the seriousness in high school is a little bit crazy, but in college there's a lot of money and these guys are passionate, I'd rather have that than a guy like BYU's coach who doesn't care.
burner27 2 years ago
Yeah I was referring to HS, kids = HS, adults = College. But still the same thing can apply to college.
BYU's coach is competitive, as is Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Urban Meyer, etc.... These guys wouldn't be college coaches if they weren't, but I don't think they go out and go balistic like here.
You can be fiery, competitive, and passionate... and every coach is bound to go past the boiling limit eventually... but it doesn't have to happen on this kind of extreme.
dsikorski31 2 years ago
where i went to school....if the coaches wasn't cusses at u....then u was playing like shit
scottyaaron21 3 years ago
I don't like the fact that the coach cusses so much and yells so much. Angry tirades work sometimes when you do it right. But if you always yell and cuss then the players aren't going to take you seriously. My head coach yells a good bit and nobody really listens to him all that much, however we just got new DB coach that never yells, talks really calm and demands respect. In my opinion he is a much better coach.
Caldwell1132 3 years ago

Exactly. It's okay for a coach or a player to cuss during a game, but if a teacher or a student does it in school they get in trouble.

Sideline, here's an interesting note.
Definitely some irony involved in that.

Passion. It's that simple. If the game isn't important to you, then get out.
jsledgehammer 3 years ago
& sportsmanship? Does "passion" excuse him from running across the field, yelling at opposing player? Passion, yes, poor sportsmanship and setting a bad example, no. Coach needs to learn sportsmanship before he can teach by example. BTW, he also, hits and swears at kids if you watch closely (we don't show him calling them "stupid" and "moron", but he does...and this was his M.O. most of the time...perhaps too much passion caused his actions..? Perhaps a bit less passion, more common sense.
SidelineVideo 3 years ago
Coach needs to stay off the field and talk to the refs, not the opposition.
Excessive f-bombs, not my style. But both avenues will travel: Bill Parcells vs. Tony Dungy. Both winners.
The only coach/player contact I saw was a "let's go" slap on the shoulder pad. Perfectly acceptable.
You sound like a disgruntled MOM trying to make her case against a coach on the world wide web.
Be advised, if you're kid makes it to the next level, this video will look like a Sunday school church outing.

The guy's apparently a wanker with issues. I only defended him outta the gate because, let's face it, there are SO many parents who undermine GOOD coaches. I'm tired of all the whining. That said, I'm not gonna defend this guy who shouldn't be working with our children. He's hung himself. And alot of people here on YouTube know this situation BETTER than me, so I trust you and won't disagree.
jsledgehammer 2 years ago
BTW, in football you can always use more common sense, but you can NEVER have too much passion or think that a bit less passion will fix what you perceive to be a problem.
That is why you fail, as a player or a player's mom or whatever your deal is.
jsledgehammer 3 years ago
You missed the point. I love passion in sports, esp. football. What i hate is anger, demeaning criticism and physical intimidation by the coach. Sets terrible example and says it's ok to solve problems with violence. The best coaches use positive re-enforcement with young athletes, not negative, bullying tactics. Did you see the 60 Minutes segment on this? These methods prove counterproductive. Just my opinion as former player & teacher.
TidelineVideo 3 years ago 2
The first clip of this video shows a player cussing and disrespecting the coaches while they're out of the room. So obviously this is the culture within the program, top to bottom.
I coached 10 years in a public high school program in which the head coach demanded that no coaches or players curse.
HOWEVER, there were definitely effective and angry tirades! Complete ass-rippings. Never personal - just football.
You said I missed the point, but most folks replying to this disagree with u 2.
jsledgehammer 3 years ago
I think your coach played it about right. If coach is always yelling, cussing, how will you know when he means it?
SidelineVideo 3 years ago
I saw nothing out of line at all. Telling a player to "fuck his shit up" isn't telling him to literally try to hurt that player, just trying to reinforce the mentality that you got to have to play defense in football.
I think for the prayer part, the coaches should hand each player a consent form, and if everybody agrees that the Lord's prayer is ok for them, then they should be allowed to do it. If anyone disagrees, then they shouldn't be allowed, considering it is public property and all
BillyBong05 3 years ago
I agree, EXCEPT at the end of the clip the coach crosses all the way to other side (almost) and yells, points at a player he believed interfered with his wide receiver. That's wrong, and sets a really bad example to the kids. Personally, I have no problem with praying on the field, but if it is a school that gets money from the Federal government, it's illegal, that's it, no debate you can't do it. L.A. City schools are partially funded by Feds. A silent moment is not illegal however.

MrLuckyDog 3 years ago 2
MrLuckyDog probably said what I tried to say, only better. Ha ha!
You can go R. Lee Ermey style on a player without the cussing and finish it with, "you're better than that, I know you are!" and kids respond positively to that regardless of how bad they just got their ass chewed.
jsledgehammer 3 years ago
Spot on jledgehammer and MrLucky...yelling is ok sometimes, a lot in football, but look at John Wooden, hardly any emotion, at least on the outside...and there's nothing really wrong with anything in this vid until the very end...but last year there were a lot of fights and disruptions by coaches...insults and actual physical altercations...so its good to discuss this...im not for the pussyfacation of kids, honest, thanks for your opinions.

KiheiBuilt 3 years ago
I think he meant violence after the whistle or in everyday life...of course football is violent and cussing is fun sometimes, but coaches do set the tone and need to control their actions...negative vs positive re-enforcement...stay positive, yell and cuss all you want. That coaches actions say to the kids that it's ok to break the rules and go after somebody if you don't agree with a call or life decision. Bad teacher, bad student.
MrLuckyDog 3 years ago
high school coaches are so pathetic. they take the games so serious coaching nothing but a bunch of kids. they are just the losers who love being in control for once in their life but are too shitty to be a real coach like college and nfl coaches.
tonyfakeslikebear 3 years ago

My coaches used to scream at me not only does it motivate it shows that they have will to win as well
mav51 3 years ago

SidelineVideo 3 years ago
its not an issue of separation of church and state. people always think that separation of church and state means no religous symbols of any kind on government property. Not true; it means that Congress shall declare no national religion. praying on the field is not a congressional declaration of christianity, judaism, islam etc.
pacdset50 3 years ago
So it IS ok to pray on Los Angeles public school property? I thought that was a no-no, but I really don't know the exact law...so set me straight if you know. I have nothing against prayer in school, we prayed all the time in Catholic school, but I always thought that separation of church & state was reason you can't pray in "public" school class or football field. The coach leading prayer in vid was from a Catholic school and this was his first game at Taft. Anyone know if open prayer is ok?
SidelineVideo 3 years ago
BTW, they were saying the Lord's prayer "Our father who art in heaven..." so I think that IS a declaration of christianity...? Unless I missed the muslim version. It's fine if you just tell the kids "OK everyone take a knee" and then say a silent prayer, or not, what you like, which is what we do. A silent moment to pray, meditate or think about the game or your algebra homework...but leading the Lord's Prayer...?

You keep saying this, and it is patently false. This issue is one of illegal policy being enforced. There is no such thing as "Separation of Church and State" in the way you are using it. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.".
kenfo0 2 years ago
I didn't say that...MrLuckyDog did, but I agree...that's the law, period. If you disagree and believe that it is an "...illegal policy being enforced" then you can sue the govt...why dont you...you sound really worked up over it...funny no one else has sued them...? Maybe you ought to do some research on the law...lots of laws not specifically mentioned in Constitution besides, does not The Lord's Prayer conflict w/ "Congess shall make no law respecting an establisment of religion"..? Nod YES.
SidelineVideo 2 years ago
yes, you did say it, and said it again. the Lord's prayer in no way conflicts with "Congress shall make no law". Explain what law is being made if a prayer is said. None. kenfo0 2 years ago

Wrong, dumbass."Congress shall make no law..." . Saying a prayer, which people can opt out of, is not Congress making a law. You REALLY are stupid.

Coach got lucky...should have received 15-yd unsportsmanlike for that behavior.

As a high school football player, I don't mind when coaches curse due to a bad play, but when they say stuff like.."Fuck his shit up" that's just immature
SimpleAccount123 3 years ago
Worse may be calling a kid "stupid" or a "moron"...when perhaps the kid is NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer..destroys any confidence and self worth...with a confident smart kid the effect is not as traumatic at all...Starr used to call Stve Smith names (stupid) to no effect. Smith was too confident and too good to have this guy rattle him at all. But a less talented/mature kid...?

I'm saying when the coach get's worked up too much and starts sounding like a 15 year old.

Taft and Crenshaw are California teams not Florida
zpoly4ever4 4 years ago
It's no coincidence that Florida football players are the toughest in the nation. Yr of the Bull is just crazy ha

some of you need to check out "Year of the Bull"

year of the bull was good
anothablend 4 years ago
Yr of the Bull...thanks...is that the doc of the Florida HS where the coach dares the kid to hit him, then rushes him...? That doc was amazing...showed all the bad...and some good...that was that team & staff that yr.
SidelineVideo 4 years ago
Ya, that's the one.
They aren't coaching at MNW anymore. Billy Rolle is the HC and there are new assts.
Some of that shyt was crazy.
canefan17 4 years ago
EZ to see why...that coach was out of control and it seemed to take its toll on the team...did not show good sense...that's why they lost @ state finals to a smaller, slower team who were huge underdogs. Good film.

if you think these guys are bad you should see John Gruden

All my coaches were like that in high school! some of them used to carry bats and sideswipe receivers during practice!
ballsnot 4 years ago
You're kidding, right? Bats? Plastic bats though right? Did they go off on you during games? Did they show good sportsmanship at games? Mine didnt. Some coaches seem to encourage "bad manners" (see Starr's outburst @ City final), and bad attitude toward opponents & refs. Just show some class.

hey were you one of those guys that werent good at sports sports would be terrible if the coaches didnt get in the players face and light a fire under their ass

oh man high school football is sooo hard core. i wish i was that awesome.
RealBloppy 4 years ago
You oughtah see the really "hard core" Woody Hayes like actions i got while shooting Taft football...these are the lightweight clips...(most Taft coaches were great, but he literally broke every CIF rule in the Blue Book (see Coaches ethics) & i have video of much of it...can't believe he said/did some of the things i got on tape. You'll never see it, i'm not out to get him fired/arrested, just spanked.
SidelineVideo 4 years ago
i was being sarcastic. but yeah i've seen some woody hayes stuff, he's crazy.
RealBloppy 4 years ago
Fact is, some HS programs ARE very hard core and very intense...college is in the balance, but actions like hitting kids & embarrassing them in front of team/school and running onto the field pointing and yelling at a kid on the other team...what kind of example/role model is that? Coaches teach kids by their actions and players reflect attitudes/actions of coaches. Teach players to leave the violence on the field.

amen. people get hurt playing football. it IS violence. SO WHAT! dont like it! dont watch it. Let your kids play tennis then.
crossriflecom 4 years ago

Astounding!
