  • ..."Utilities of Dune": 'Prevention of damage to underground electrical cables from marauding Sand Worms.'

  • A thumper can only be used on fualts that have a risistance above 100 ohms i.e. an open circuit with the SIM, ICM methods. otherwise its with a TDR scope

  • @windpompie Correct., You need some resistance to create a spark which makes an audible noise.

  • what a Thump Test?

  • @form109 A thump test which discharges high voltage capacitor in a faulty cable.

Where the fault is an arc occurs which can be traced down via the sound it makes, often the ground shakes near the fault hence the name thumper is used in the industry.

  • That would be good popping Batteries :D

  • @HDXFH \

Yeah it would. A thumper produces an insane amount of HV current.

  • nice work

  • So what exactly does this locate? Is it a method to find out if a repaired isolation fault is up to the job again?

  • @weeardguy To pin point where a cable has broken down in insulation.

An arc occurs and the noise can be detected.

Dig up crew exposes cable and jointer can repair fault.
