The prevailing environment (food availability, disease, infant mortality, natural disasters, life expectancy etc) needs to be considered also. Chinese population did not start to grow until the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) when China realised major improvements in agriculture and food production. He wrote the book "Night" which talks about his time in the concentration camp Auschwitz. I'm not taking sides here, I just thought this might interest you. I had to read it for a class and found it quite an informative read.
