hold up, dnt understand one thing -_- isnt the last unmanned drone (2003 commissioned one with nuclear reactor) gonna spew out radiation while flying? Or have they put an indirect reactor the "safer" version which was too heavy and complex back in 50s and 60s?
seems to me that if you were going to use nuclear fuel in a recon drone or even a predator drone you would not need the speed of the nuclear engines designs here, and there too heavy ,too complex, and too big, they would just use an electric motor, and a nuclear fuel cell or a steam ro other type closed turbine system to run a generator,or direct drive the prop or jet turbine, fuel cell would make the most sense unless you need a supersonic drone
What the hell is wrong with people. I doubt the normal citizens of the US or the USSR at the time wanted a "cold war" situation. And yet if it had gone nuclear it would have been them that suffered the most. Until people can live together we can't get anywhere. Head-strong politicians cause more problems than anything else. It's so stupid, all these school-yard bullies waving their sticks at each other. Collaborate, share technology for everyone's benefit, don't threaten each other with it :-(
What I got from this was that due to the USSR no longer existing the USA is not bound by the treaties it signed and can continue with risky nuclear testing...
You could construct a radiationless direct cycle engine without a separate reactor and an infinite loiter time using an optimized LENR that electrolyses steam or liquid hydrogen inside the turbine constructed out of metal deuteride alloys. The engineering challenge is to construct alloys that accept LENR reactions consistently without fail under extreme pressures and temperatures.
@FranTxis Except it has been proven that "Low Energy Nuclear Reaction" "Cold Fussion" are not probable for any great energy source, and not near enough energy output to power a nuclear jet engine.

That was awsome.

Giving up your life for a nuclear experiment? Them Russian test pilots were unbelievably crazy. RIP.

Very good.

Nope cheaper for a satellite to spy on you with, and not everyone can just shoot one out of orbit.

Nuclear powered ramjet - see also "Project Pluto" on Wikipedia.

That Convair bomber concept is a nice looking bird, even back then.
I'm seriously considering using the main design cues for an R/C model.
Thanks for the upload.
