A lot of little details in this game remind me of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3, actually. Plus a little of Bubble Bobble, when you look at those last mini-bosses.
I think you can circumvent the problem mentioned at 3:49 by uploading at an FPS which is not a factor of 60. The FPS of the NES is 60. If the color flashes at 60 FPS, and if you record at 30 or 15 FPS, then you only see every 2nd or every 4th frame. Therefore if you upload at 24 FPS, you don't get that problem.
I think YouTube cuts out every other frame of a video, so that might explain why the stars don't look like they're flashing.
Anyway, nice videos. I never noticed just how much attention to detail was given to this game. I could never manage to even beat the first boss though. :x
i'm not sure if anyone has said this, but for the last wizard boss, the technique i use is to release a star, and as it is bouncing around get hit by a bubble. when you're in the bubble he always swoops down to the bottom of the screen, and if you've timed the star right, you can often hit him two times with the same star. great game and a great playthough. just having pictures of some of the hard jumps saves hours of time on a playthough! thanks!
@theredeye for Gimmick! one shall reduce fps not to 30 Hz but to 25.
30 Hz is the actual timing when the star switches its colors. So, after YouTube had reduced FPS to 30, you see either yellow, or white. The actual visual color depends of the first frame when the star appeared & if it was left in vid or removed.
We worked out the FPS to reduce to at TASVideos. While YT cuts every even frame, the flickering in some games may be broken. If it also is set on 30 Hz, you either see NO flickering, or NO character.
So, to leave the flickering in encode & to have it ok, you must reduce FPS to 25.
I'll show how I encoded Gimmick!'s TAS via Video-response.
Yet another way to obtain the last secret item! For some reason I never thought of using a bomb there.
I usually shoot a star down the ledge on the left side and jump on it to reach the other side. It requires precise timing and positioning, but it works.
This game wouldn't be Gimmick if the puzzle had just one solution, I'm pretty sure the programmer intentionally allowed both ways.
I was a bit disappointed that you didn't spend more time with the orange creature at the beginning of this stage. Whenever you ready a star, it stops and begins to wag its tail in anticipation, then takes off after the star when you launch it!
Three words. Not. High. Enough.

Makes me wanna play this, too, so I'll have to find a ROM.
Thanks, man!

You can convert the 60 fps video to 30 fps with AviSynth (see Wikipedia). Use the following lines in the script:
(FrameCount % 2 == 1) ? DuplicateFrame(FrameCount - 1) : nop
Overlay(SelectEven, SelectOdd, opacity=0.5)

I might have to try that, thanks for the advice.

No problem. :) I forgot one more thing though: The fps of the recorded AVI is slightly higher than 60. To correct it, use the following:
TimeStretch(rate = 100.0 * 60 / FrameRate)
AssumeFPS(60)
The first line slows down the audio a bit, and the second changes the video playback speed.

I like how the last section before the final boss had no music, really ratchets up the tension.

I must commend you for making this look even remotely easy. I have had the hardest time using stars as a surface for jumping.
