Just started to check out your videos, enjoying them, but as a new LP collector, long time music collector, I have to ask how you're able to pick up so much vinyl, especially those hard to find ones.
just picked up the limited record store day reissue of arthur russell's world of echo. store didnt seem to know what it was. got it sealed for 17.99. one of my fav finds ever i must confess
Hey Dan.. how do those Flaming Lips lps sound as far as the actual quality of the pressings? Any thoughts? I was gonna buy that box on RSD but really wanted to hear some reviews before I spent the money.. But one the shops I frequent still has plenty of copies and I'm really wanting to pick one up before they sell out. And yours I'm assuming is all black vinyl? I think the colored edition only available thru the FL website. Black works for me, I'm not a fan of colored vinyl.. Thanks..
@fatbackfunk they sound wonderful, and I know someone with the originals as well and they say they new mix of Hit To Death blows the old one out of the water. So I say go ahead and pull the trigger on Heady Nuggs, you won't be let down. -Dan
@dhanycz Thanks for the info Dan! Yeah I think I'm gonna make the move this weekend or next week for sure. Also one more question for you, I was at one of my regular shops last night and saw a Church of Misery LP(VOL 1).. Obviously some kind of reissue.. do you know anything about those? Can't remember what label it was on.. They just put it on the shelf last night so I would assume it's a really new reissue. Anyway just thought I'd run it by you for some insight.. Thanks again..
@fatbackfunk Yep, Emetic Records just reissued Vol. 1, it's limited to 1000 copies and is being sold for $19.00 on their website. They even included the bonus 7" that came with the Leafhound copies, which is awesome. I have one coming in the mail, but don't pay the eBay prices for it (which are already up to $70) obviously people don't want to both doing a google search and finding that they can pay $50 less than that! haha -Dan
@dhanycz Ah I see.. Yeah I did an eBay search out of curiosity and saw those overpriced copies.. Amoeba (the local shop here in SF) has them priced at 23 bucks.. which isn't bad at all, I figure 19 thru the C.O.M. website after shipping comes out to about the same price so..And yeah it certainly pays off to spend the time and research/price search. I've been screwed by my own laziness in the past..:) Anyway Dan, thanks again for the helpful info.. I'm gonna grab that piece as well.. Take care
what i was waiting from long ago, the names of the artist and album on the description!! for the non english speakers is sometimes hard to understand the names when they are not written on the cover. could you make it a routine?? thanks, and greetings from switzerland!!
I also bought Heady Nuggs. I notices that they made the inserts like records sleeves, am I supposed to put the records in those? They look like the perfect size, and I'm really not a fan of the kind of sleeves that show to the sticker on the vinyl. Sorry if this is a really dumb question.
@MindOfFeebleness yeah, they're optional inner sleeves, but frankly I'd keep the LPs in the paper sleeves, since the glue on the printed ones can sometimes make a mess on the LP if you chose to use them. just a heads up! it's a great package though. -Dan
I know that you stated in previous posts that you like John Fahey. Did you already have a copy of Requia? Vanguard did an rsd reissue. Those Vanguard titles looked pretty awesome.
Hey Dan another thing...have you heard of Zerfas? They have one self titled release on small label. Psychedelic rock from late 60s early 70s. If you haven't I would suggest you pick up a reissue. (original is $700 and up) off eBay for only like $25. The Zerfas brothers went to my high school. Great stuff
@dhanycz sounds a bit like me i had to get my from ebay £10 i got jimi Hendrix reissue tho and i brought Trees The garden of jane delawney as well worth a buy if you dont have it
Dang! You got the Nirvana! The only store that close to me that I went to only had ONE copy of the Nirvana, but I didn't see it right off. I asked the girl behind the counter about it and she was about to take me to that ONE she told me they had only to find out that some 13 yr old boy beat me to it. I was like, DAMN! Too make things worse, when I turned around he was waving it out in front of me like" HEE HEE HEE I BEAT YOU TO IT SO IT"S MINE!" I felt like choking him..LOL.
@joshtowens Strangely enough my store had a number of copies of the Nirvana. Of course I picked up a copy, but was it a ilmited pressing? I just figured it was very abundant because of this. Although my store did not have any copies of the Tom Petty albums, much to my disappointment. Nor did it have the Ozzy reissues.
Can you please educate me on what's the point in owning a record player? I currently do not own one but have been thinking about getting one. I just want to know if it is worth me spending a $1,000 + on a good record player.
@superfly299 if you need to ask that question, then it probably isn't something you're really concerned with getting into. each person that collects records does it for a particular reason, and for most of us it's not even a conscious decision, just something that keeps escalating.
ps. start cheap, don't invest all your cash into something you're unsure about. unless you just have money to burn... -Dan
I'm still mad...why does Record Store Day always coincide with one of my indoor percussion competitions? I've never been to one and probably never will until I graduate... :(
I went to Toronto for the day, ended up getting the intro to Barret and the two Black Angels pieces, I had a chance to get the Television live album, but I figured I'd get it cheaper so I put it back needless to say that was a mistake.
It's unfortunate how next-to-none record stores here in Scotland are involved with Record Store Day, but I went to the nearest one to me, in the city centre, surprisingly they actually had the Radiohead Supercollider single, and I bought Glasvegas's new album, just to show my support as always.
Great finds, I'll stick a video up now. I ended up grabbing the 'Heady Nuggs' box online - worked out around £30 cheaper than buying the release in the UK.
hey Dan,what a great Rolling Stones 45! glad you got the Nirvana too! it has some different versions of the songs than i'm used to.gotta love that Dylan too! and Pearl Jam. Don't call me daughter, not fit to,the picture kept will remiiiiind me!
Nice video. Record Store Day was awesome. Each year I buy more than previous year. What was nice was that everybody in the store was cool and respectful. Not like the mall during Chrismas time. People were saying "Excuse me" and waiting their turn to find their records from shelves. The store was packed too. It was just a fun day.
Good stuff man I got a notification as soon as the flaming lips coloured box set went online last night...I had my mouse about to click purchase but just couldn't swing the $150 (125+shipping). Anyways went to the record store this morning and ended up only getting Nirvana - Hormoaning and the Fucked Up- David's Town Compilation. Haven't listened to the Nirvana EP but the Fucked Up record is really cool, nothing that you'd expect though. I am enjoying it though.
Didn't have enough money on me for the Flaming Lips box set! Hopefully, it will still be at the record store next week when I have enough money. I did manage to pick up The Beach Boys record, and my record player does play at 78 RPM, sounds amazing. Love the beach Boys, so it was worth every penny. Also grabbed the two Grinderman EP's, one has a rainbow color design on the vinyl. And I picked up the Laura Marling/Mumford & Sons EP.
Congrats on the finds my friend! Do you even carry a wallet or do you just have the bank wire your paychecks right to the record shops lol! Love seeing you this fired up man, enjoy those wonderful pieces!
Great video Dan. I also got both the Pearl Jam albums and I cam straight home and listeded to Vs. too. It does sound GREAT!! I was excited to get it. I got a lot off other stuff but was excited about the Tom Petty release, it was a special addition on white vinyl. And in my local record store there was only one Jimmy Eat World at the store and by luck I got it!! Great video as usual, keep them coming/
I went to 2 stores today (the first at 8am) and I couldn't get a copy of the Flaming Lips box set. Do you think all the copies were already sent to stores, or is there a chance of re-orders?
@EoLoVoX The one on their site is different - they were selling a colored vinyl version. And that sold out in hours! I think I will call a couple local stores to see if any can order it. I agree with Dan, I can't imagine 6500 copies of a $130 box set selling out in a week.
@JasonsVinylObsession definitely a chance for reorder on that one, it's too expensive to move that fast from distributors. i mean the colored version sold out overnight on the Lips website, but there's only 1000 of that one. whereas there's 6000 of the black, so I'd just ask your store sometime next week if they can order you another copy. it's honestly SO worth it to have those early FL records on vinyl. -Dan
Great pickups. Someone snatched the Flaming Lips box set just as I walked in the store. I did snag the "Havana Affair" Ramones/Chili Peppers 7" just for fun ($10) and now see it on ePay for $30+!!
FYI, that Dylan album's name is pronounced "Bran-Dice." A very liberal Boston uni...perfect for a Dylan concert!
@jokertt14 I went to a different store early on, stood in line for an hour and was 2nd in line when the door opened. I had to do that because my shop didn't get everything in that I wanted, so there was still that "unsureness" as to whether I was going to get everything. And luckily enough I did. Cheers. -Dan
@dhanycz Sorry about that Dan . its just the way you said it i guess . im not jealous your the vinyl dude . just was wondering how ordering out your own catalog was hard . lol . i mean that's how i got my titles only cause i dont have any good record stores with in hours of my house . cheers .
Check out my videos later tonight on my channel. I took at video showing my "Record Store Day" pick ups as well as some cool videos I took of some of the live bands that played at the record store... VERY FUN DAY!!! But my feet are killing me,LOL., on my feet all day, but hey, It was worth EVERY MINUTE!! I had absolutely the TIME OF MY LIFE today!!
I see you got hold of one of the Nirvana releases. I was wanting that one too, but I stood at the door to the store waiting for them to open, was one of the FIRST to get in, couldn't find the Nirvana, so I asked the girl behind the counter about it, she told me they only had one copy and she was about to show me where it was and she stopped suddenly and said "Well, that boy already grabbed it." I turned around and the damn 13-14 yr old boy was waving it at me like hee hee hee, I beat you to it.
Jealous of the Heady Nuggs pick up! a bit expensive for me but there was so many other great exclusives this year. had an awesome time. happy Record Store Day!
Well done! The shop didnt have most of what I wanted but Im digging what I got. The guy in front of me in line got the last Lips set. I was bummed out! But i did manage to get Syd Barrett - (really nice package) ; Bad Brains - God of Love ; Grateful Dead - First one, mono. Also, If you like the way those Pearl Jam reissues sound, I got the box set here in the states a couple weeks ago and (im sure you know) it comes with the Boston show on vinyl. Its sounds amazing! Cheers!
I saw King of Leon last on live on YouTube.Concert was great they were awesome.I first heard from them listening to one of your videos.Just wanted to say thanks.
